However this will be to my knowledge my first post. I have never posted before because I have been to lazy to figure out how to do it. I am still not sure if this will get on the list. Anyway some people may have seen me in the ecto channel as Ariana. It's no my real name though. I first heard of ecto and happy rhodes because the bbs I am on had an internet music forum I use to read. In that forum someone was putting in an advertisement for ecto. I was only interested because it mentioned Tori Amos. Then we got IRC and I found the ecto channel. I found out a little more about what people in ecto listen to. Then someone gave me the mailing list address. I got a Happy Rhodes album a few months later at a HMV in NYC. I only really liked a few songs, but I figured if those songs are good who knows with her other albums. I eventually found all her music thanks to the people who have mentioned where I can find her music. I have found her in Tower Records in the Village (NYC), and Carle Place (Long Island), Sam Goody in the Village, and Roosvelt Field Mall (Long Island). I have also tried a few other artists who I may have never heard of if it wasn't for Ecto like Milla. I have also introduced Happy Rhodes to a few people. At least 2 people I know have went out and bought at least one album of hers. Unfortunately the radio station I listen to WDRE 92.7 which is part of the underground network refuses to play it. The djs say they have no power over what music is played. One obnoxious dj told me over the irc on there channel that if I want to hear that music or any other music that wdre finds to strange to play use my personal stereo cause that was what it was meant for! :( I can't pick up any of the nyc college stations because I live in Bellerose, Queens which is on the border of Nassau County. So, I am stuck with a bunch of lousy radio stations like wplj, z-100, etc etc.. What else do I listen to . I listen to the Cranberries, Elastica ,Alanis Morrisette, Catherine Wheel, Liz Phair, Garbage, and alot more which I can't think of now. But lately I have been more into listen to the women. ------------------------------ From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) Date: Sun, 17 Dec 95 17:26:16 EST Subject: Happy meets Microsoft!!! :-) Hi all; I picked up the new Microsoft CD-ROM music encyclopedia, Music Central 96. I'll leave the review for the computer-oriented newsgroups, save to say that it's a brave failure of an attempt at a comprehensive music reference. Errors abound, and almost all the discographies (they come from the Muze database) are incomplete or incorrect. But Happy gets a listing! She's arrived in the hallowed halls of Gates, only to have her entry completely stuffed up by, I assume, Muze. I'll try a bit of cut-and-paste from the program at this point... Here's the main listing (there's no bio): Happy Rhodes BUILDING THE COLOSSUS (1994) Primary Artist RHODESONGS (1993) Primary Artist WARPAINT (1991) Primary Artist The listing for BTC is great - full track listing, full credits. Rhodesongs only has a credits listing, no song list - and the entire credits? "Primary Artist Happy Rhodes". Gee, thanks for that. :) Warpaint has a full songlist and credits. Anyway, they're accepting additions for both the monthly updates and the next edition - if someone's still maintaining a discography with personnel details, songlists and maybe even a bio, you could do worse than email it to them - it's great that Happy's on there at all, and it'd be *really* nice if she was comprehensively covered. The email address for the Music Central crew is mcentral@microsoft.com - they'll be getting a lot of mail from me with all the errors I've been finding! - - Anthony - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au http://daemon.apana.org.au/~anthony/ Physical mail: P.O. Including all the Ecto archives... So that means if you can't remember something that someone said on the list some time ago this thing should dig it up. It's kinda weird. All this flood of information, so easily searchable. (Alright, alright, so it wasn't a sell-out... :-). Actually it was 150 people at a medium-sized theatre in skokie. We had a blast and the audience seemed to enjoy it, based on all the positive feedback. And we sold a decent number of CDs and tapes (except to you, val! :-(). We were very pleased with the whole event. We plan to try to perform more regularly in quality venues like this in and around chicagoland, and maybe elsewhere. Perhaps I should send a CD to WXPN? The CD actually came out very well. Anyone who is interested in owning one of their very own (I'll even sign it for you), please send me email. Oh, and the highlight of the show was our CD-shrink wrap opening contest, pitting the CD opening skills of two audience members against each other in a race against the clock. How fast can you open a shrink-wrapped CD? I suggested we require each contestant to keep one hand behind their back, but we only had rented out the theatre for one night, so... that idea was vetoed. - -mjm (mike mendelson, mjm@zylab.mhs.compuserve.com) ------------------------------ From: MJM Date: 19 Dec 95 10:00:51 EST Subject: schmoozapalooza Listen Up! The first I received is probably the most "awesome". Loreena McKennitt's _a winter garden - five songs for the season_. Wow. I can't remember the last time I wanted to dance to a Christmas tune. Her rendition of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" does just that. The music is "middle-eastern", and has a nice feeling to it. IMHO, the best song on the disc, although the other four are nothing to scoff at either. This is a must have if you like Christmas music - especially out of the ordinary - or if you're a Loreena fan. The second is a "must have" if you're on this list - and enjoy Happy. I finally have _building the colossus_, and - although quite different from the only other two Happy I have (RhodeSongs and The Keep) - is still quite enjoyable. I can't remember the song, but one of them her voice goes lower than any other song on the other two discs. Slowly - but surely - I'm going to own all of Happy's CDs. The third is not as "strong" as the other two, but still enjoyable. _Become What You Are_ by The Juliana Hatfield Three. The only other Juliana I have is a Blake Babies disc, so this is similar, but different enough to call her own. A good, "poppy" disc. I was lucky with these two. My sister ended up "stealing" my CD-want list (huge) when I was home last, and these last two were - although not specifically listed - on there. I tend to put down an artist, and if I know enough of their stuff, will put down "any" for CD "titles". The Loreena was given to me because my wife was tired of listening to me that I wanted this disc before Christmas day. Hey, who said complaining never got you anywhere! :-) All three are definitely recommended, and well worth their "cost" - heehee.
