It's called _Excelsis: A Dark Noel_ and it features tracks by black tape for a blue girl, Faith and the Muse, Lycia and Attrition among others. Two things about the album _really_ got my attention: (1) Love Spirals Downward performs the "Wa-Hoo-Boris song" from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and (2) Area appears on it. So I'm left wondering, (1) has anyone obtained this CD yet? and (2) what could the Area track possibly be? - - Mike Michael Doyle maeldun@i-2000.com =================================================================== "A man of genius makes no mistakes. Lots of make believe-use your imagination type stuff for the kids. It sounds like you're mixing two different shows. There was "New Zoo Revue" which had a human man (Doug) and woman (Mary Jo), along with Freddy Frog, Henrietta Hippo and (something) Owl, all of whom were people in large goofy costumes. The theme started with "It's the New Zoo Revue, comin' right at you..." Then there was "The Magic Garden" which was two folksy-hippy women with guitars. The non-humans on this show were Sherlock, a pink squirrel, and Flapper, a duck. This was the show with the magic tree and the giggle patch. I don't remember the opening theme, but early in each show they did "The Hello Song" which went "It's time to say hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello. Personally, i feel the version on WFS is far inferior to the original version (on Count Your Blessings)... listening to it on WFS usually has me cringing. The original is warm, beautiful, choral, and somehow imbued with the essence of Jane.. the WFS version feels (all this IMHO) colder, the instrumentation becomes precious at times, jane's vocals aren't up to standard (she sings mostly in a high, almost falsetto seeming voice, lacking the usual warmth, emotion, and beauty of her voice, and the harmonies can't capture the feeling of the choral original), and the changes in the lyrics (particularly the choruses) really mess with the vocals/melody/tempo mesh she achieved so perfectly in the original. and, seeing as this song was the main reason i bought WFS, it's lead to being somewhat disappointed in the whole thing :(. oh well. kevin - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- kevin contzen ....... so take a lesson from the strangeness you feel and know vancouver, bc ..... you'll never be the same and find it in your heart to kneel canada ... down and say i gave my love didn't i? and i gave big some contzen@sfu.ca . times and i gave it in my own sweet time i'm just leaving ------------------------------ From: Kerry White Date: Thu, 7 Dec 1995 16:02:44 -0600 (CST) Subject: Ali Click + Bela Fleck and the Flectones Hello, Amoung the cds I'm rounding up to sell into slavery at the used cd store is a cd single from Mr Brian Eno. 8 versions of Ali Click from NERVE NET. Its been a while since I've posted, so I thought I'd make it a long one! Well, I'm really impressed with a "recent" purchase... although it's not new, it is new to me.... Katell Keinig's "O Seasons, O Castles"! Overall, this is one of the best cds I've ever purchased.... I've played it over and over, sometimes several times a day... and after a month it is still one of my favorites. Some of my favorite tracks are as follows: Actually, I started out to write this on the 15th of September, and I've gotten "a few" purchases since then, so the fact that I'm wanting to send this out is even more evidence that I'm totally nuts over this CD. Hestia: Reminds me of an acoustic Heather Nova in vocals and intensity; sounds sort of like Paula Cole as well. Nice sounding guitar strums; Very powerful, one of my favorite songs on the CD... I certainly haven't gotten all the meanings out of it yet, and I don't suspect I will soon, but it evokes powerful feelings. It is for me a very powerful anthem to the spirit, so I'm taking the liberty of posting the lyrics; don't flame or sue me. [.... lyrics follow...] You are witnessing a start A new life You are witnessing a start Of my fabulous life I've been sleeping in a passageway under the sea I've been hiding from a world I could no longer proceed in I've been crouching in the fireplace Hestia; Safe amongst the flames So you stand there With the lion tamer's rod And you stick it in And you draw me out And I fly off And I want you But I don't want your monkey Blackbird has black eyes Trickster with the queen of hearts Tucked into his black bowler hat You are witnessing a start Dead pigeon on the street Dead weight descending from my knees Dead leaf on the branch about to fall I won't accept, at this stage Anything that isn't all I want And I want you But I don't want your monkey I've been laying low Breathing for a while With my arms wrapped around my heartbroken child But I woke up one day with a song in my heart And the words of the song said You are witnessing a start I want you but I don't want your [Monkey on his leash with his rabbi's face Hanging off your neck] I want you but I don't want your [Cheeks pressed, you can feel him shake] I want you, But I don't want your monkey I want you I want you I want you Partisan: "Partisan" has more of a standard rock beat than the previous song... less emotionally intense in the vocal expression than Hestia, very nice. Although different musically, I get reminded of Happy's "Collective Heart". Here's the lyrics, cuz I thought someone might be interested! I want to Crawl through every garden path Peel the back off every house Gaze at every waking room and memorize it inside out I want to stir The black earth flower beds Squeeze the stones out one by one Lean my head on every door Do everything you've ever done I want to cup the bread crumbs from your table Bathe the glaze on every bowl Inhale the perfume of your hearth And nestle up next to your stove I may never meet you And I may never shake your hand But down beneath the melamine You and I are partisan I want to tug and smooth Your tangled hair Bite your nails and stroke your cat See your mouth seek out another How come we all do things like that I want to grip my stomach with your laughter Sway when silences invade Distill your blood Your pith, your crux And follow every movement made I want to permeate the air you breathe Slide my way under your skin Place myself behind your eyes And watch you, watch me, looking in I may never meet you And I may never shake your hand But down beneath the melamine You and I are partisan Down under brand new, Old pine, knock down, Chipboard, cut-price, Wipe-clean furniture We could sit here on this humid ground Exchange our views and make it work Under the zany, ethnic, high street, classic Very latest clothes we wear The rainbow palette of the skin is signaling A change of gear A change Are you hip to the grip of this fellowship We've been living in delusion now it's time to quit I know change is hard, when the cage is barred But this jail is of your making So let down your guard You might say we all feel That we've had a raw deal But we need you in the circle It's a real emergency We've got the rest of time In our communal mind With you, the possibilities Begin to shine With you, the possibilities Begin to shine With you, the possibilities Begin to shine Cut: Reminds me of both Paula Cole and Ani DiFranco, but unique unto herself.... Really like the minor guitar scales, nice to hear a few augmented seconds here and there, and the interplay with the drums is really cool. Bop: Interesting background texture at times... much stronger contrasts within the song (stronger rock feel briefly in middle of song). Like a lot of her other pieces, I can't stop playing this one... it gradually builds in intensity from subtle to overpowering, weaving a web of complex emotions and subtle observations, speaking to hope, despair, Burden: Another incredibly indescribably intense song... you can feel the burden and sorrow. Conch Shell: Wow! some interesting lyrics here! (so they don't print them!) This is all done a cappella, in a somewhat sweeter voice than seems appropriate for the subject matter. I've transcribed the lyrics below (for all of the lyric people): Your love is like a conch shell Irregular and slick You're tougher than a ten foot snail Chopped up and stewing on the heat I want to know how far you'll go In your warped idea of quest Are you really gonna go for broke or kick it with the best? or kick it with the best? or kick it with the best? Your love is like a cockroach in the furnace of the night I'll toss and turn and toss once more and you'll still be scuttling in my sight I want to hold you by your neck and shake you to your bones I want to pull out all your legs and place those trophies on my wall and place those trophies on my wall and place those trophies on my wall Coolea is smooth and slow, and has folk-like acoustic guitar with strings and expressive vocals. Destiny's Darling: Jazzy, upbeat feel. Cool lyrics. Celebrate! [.... excerpt follows...] You've got the promise of the future on the tip of your tongue You've got the breath of the evening breezing out of your lungs You've got the movement of the milky way betraying your mind Go ahead present me with alternatives; I'm giving you none. Waiting For You to Smile is another spoken word song / poem with quite a few background sounds - very good. Paris: Here she reminds me of Heather Nova again... with some folk-style Patti Smith thrown in. Some powerful lyrics, which I'm not going to type in (go get the CD), partially because the way she sings them has got to be experienced (But the same could be said about the ones I DID type in ;-) O Seasons: Another great song, of course, to be expected! And the title cut, no less! O Iesu Mawr: Traditional Welsh hymn, and it sounds like it, even though arranged by Katell. Don't miss this one! Unique sound. The Gulf of Araby: Another slow, intense song. Go listen today.... - -Richard \@/ | Richard A. I don't remember him even having a mic at the shows I've seen. With the exception of "Closer" on _Equipoise_, which features Kelly Bird on bacground vox, the 'talk' in "Glory" (_Building the Colossus_), and "Wrong Century" on _Warpaint_, which features some glossolalia by Mitch Elrod, every vocal on every officially released Happy Rhodes song is produced by Happy. Kelly Bird sings backup for Happy when she plays live. For the March '92 concerts, Martha Waterman sang backup for them. There are tapes of these concerts floating around, so it *is* possible to hear Happy singing with a couple of other people. Though when she does so, she usually takes the low registers herself. ;-) Folks have been pushing the "4 octave range" figure lately. Don't I recall it being established at at least 4.5 octaves some time in the past? Parriah Carrey may have a wider range, but she seems to waste it, often with those silly little sopranic swoops that so impress her audience. Happy uses, _pushes_ her range. She once referred to "Beat it Out" (Rhodes II) as an exercise in using the bottom of her range. "Got to get it out..."
