I forget the name of the LP, but it had some pretty funny and well-written parody-like songs, for example Love in Stereo, and something at the end called Skylab (mostly instrumental with the word "skylab" uttered at strategic times, kinda like tequila). SO, I just got the new release from ex-Mott the Hoople guy, Ian Hunter, called _Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry_. It lists the following personnel as being in the band: Ian Hunter, Guitar and Vocals; Casino Steel, Keys, vocals and percussion; Honest John Plain, Guitar and Vocals; Darrell Bath, Guitar and vocals; Glen Matlock, Bass; Vom, Drums. Now Ian I know, and Glen Matlock was a Sex Pistol, but I suspect some of these other folks are participating under pseudonyms for record contract type reasons, a la the wilburys. If I had to guess I might wonder if there was a connection to the ex-Hanoi Rocks crew (last seen in Shooting Gallery and in Cheap & Nasty, as far as I know) because Ian worked with them in the past, but I can't recognize any body in the blurry pictures and can't identify a sufficiently distinctive vocal or musical style to pin anyone down for sure. Anybody know more? Has there been any coverage on this record in the press? aside to irvin, re: golden pals. The most "ecto" stuff is probably _Drunk With Passion_ and _A Dead Horse_ on which they work with vocalist Amanda Kramer and _Blast of Silence_ and _Visions of Excess_ on which Syd Straw sings. Be warned though, that the pals are fond of sudden left turns into noise jazz and hard rock territory -- so even on "Visions" (which also features Michael Stipe from some band or other on a couple cuts) you get a blast from (Ex Sex-Pistol -- how's that for being circular??) John (ny Rotten) Lydon. FWIW, I like Syd's singing better than Amanda's. Gutsier. Her solo album, _Surprise_ was a treat too. (And had that Michael guy on it...) Their first, self-titled record is (IMnsHO) completely "non-ecto" and features noise-jazz maven John Zorn prominently. It's great if you dig that kind of thing, but if you don't, proceed with caution... now playing: jane siberry _maria_ i can not believe so many of you people didn't fall in love with this instantly. i like it better than _when i was a boy_ (which, i mean, a like a lot, so don't shoot me or anything) __/-\__/-\__/-\__/-\__/-\__/-\__/-\__/-\__/-\__==the=roLLerCOasTEr=boy= = ...nous devons cultiver notre jardin... = = INET:dmayowel@access.digex.net AOL:DougMhyphW Compu$erve:102432,355 = = visit the pathetic caverns! http://www.access.digex.net/~dmayowel = ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Mon, 4 Dec 1995 22:07:17 -0500 (EST) Subject: Palominos On Mon, 4 Dec 1995, roLLerCOasTEr boy wrote: > Be warned though, that the pals are fond of sudden left turns into > noise jazz and hard rock territory -- so even on "Visions" (which > also features Michael Stipe from some band or other on a couple cuts) > you get a blast from (Ex Sex-Pistol -- how's that for being circular??) > John (ny Rotten) Lydon. I think you mean a belch from Johnny Lydon, rather than a blast! It's worth noting that Golden Palominos are basically drummer Anton Fier's concoction. The albums consist of whoever he feels like having play with him. The older albums seemed to have more male vocals (Golden Palominos, Vision of Excess). I'm sure I'm missing some, but here's a bit of a rundown. Golden Palominos - (I don't have this, but I gather it's the John Zorn one) visions of excess - 1985. Includes vocals by Michael Stipe, John Lydon, Jack Bruce, Syd Straw, and Arto Lindsay, as well as appearances by Bill Laswell, Richard Thompson and more. Blast of Silence - ?? (Also don't have. I think Syd Straw moves to the forefront here.) A Dead Horse - ?? (Don't have. Doug said Amanda Kramer on many vocals.) Drunk With Passion - 1991 vocals by michael stipe, amanda kramer, bob mould and bob kidney. I never found amanda's singing that captivating, but she does sing on the majority of this album. This is how it feels - 1993 The start of the Lori Carson years. GPs actually look like a band here, with Carson on lead vocals on every song. It seems to be more a Bill Laswell production than previous discs, with his whole crew running around all over it. So it's got that Laswell dub and rhythmic bass undercurrent to it, with Lori Carson doing dreamy, sing-songy vocals that have more of an edge to them than you could have imagined from her solo album Shelter. ???? - 1995 I'm pretty sure there was a recent Palominos offering with Lori Carson again doing most (all?) of the lead singing. Well, that's a start for you. Maybe someone can fill in the question marks above. Not too long ago on "All Things Considered" on NPR, which my car-pool driver likes to listen to on the way home, they had a pretty long piece on the Monks, calling them the fathers of modern punk. Apparently, one of the lead members of the group has just written a book called "Black Monk Time", about the band and their experiences. An American band living in Germany, people wanting them to be more like the Beatles when they were actually kind of like the anti-Beatles (songs called "Shut Up" and such), and so on. Noa -- she is originally from NYC, transplanted to Israel where she now lives. In a word, she is wonderful. And her guitar player/accompanist/arranger/co-writer/tour partner, Gil Dor, is one of the hands down best instrumentalists I've ever watched. He is brilliant. They have been touring around together for a while. They have 3 albums of which I own the latter 2 -- Achinoam Nini (her real name) and Gil Dor, and Noa. The former is largely songs by the Israeli poet Leah Goldberg put to music. It is entirely in Hebrew. The song Me (Ani, Kazot Anochi) is probably my favorite Noa song today, but it could change. This is actually a poem by Israeli poet Rachel. The latter, Noa, is her American breakthrough album, featuring Hebrew and English songs. She plays percussion/drums throughout and live as well. She has a definite Sephardi influence (her roots may be yemen or morocco, I'm not sure), although it is rather subtle. Again, what stands out for me in their music (and it really is a joint effort -- but putting Noa's picture on the front probably is a good marketing strategy) is the strength of Gil's arrangements and accompaniments and their collective song-writing. She has a pretty good voice but Kate Bush or k d lang she ain't (hey, who is?). If you are into Israeli/Jewish music you should particularly seek this out, though I think there are plenty of ectophiles who can attest to their universal appeal. FANTASTIC live show. Someone asked about Everything BTG. The CDs in question undoubtedly are *US* releases, since I've seen the imports available (at absurd prices) for a while. Now that they're affordable, I'll look for'em. I *LOVE* Idlewild, and though I own at least two or 3 CDs after that one, they seem to get progressively fluffier, whereas IDLEWILD is meaty with song and ideas. The Night I Heard Caruso Sing is one of my favorite songs of all time, bar none. Finally, re: the Golden Palominos. I have been searching for their Syd Straw albums for ages to no avail. WE LOVE SYD!!!! She is currently living in Chicago and I have met her and conversed with her on a few occasions. She is awesome, and a huge Victoria Williams fan (she was at both Vic shows that I went to). I like dead horse alot. It is different and interesting. I don't like drunk with passion at all. It is different and lousy. I have tried to like and so far I can't. But maybe I'll try again someday. I know around here you can get either of these for cheap cheap cheap in used/cutout bins. I haven't heard any of the Lori Carson stuff, though I do own Lori's CD and like it alot as well. That's more that 'nuff for now.
