Well, I enjoyed all 5 hours (except for the glut of commercials during the last 1/2 hour), but I think I'll enjoy the full 10 hours more. I still like "Free As A Bird", though "Real Love" didn't do anything for me. Oh, and George Martin's hearing is basically gone, which was why he didn't produce the new stuff. My understanding is that he was the archivist (as Anthony suggested) for the old material, but not really the producer. To quote from the rec.music.beatles anthology FAQ " Martin is still involved, adding his historical input and production knowledge to the archival material for the audio "Anthology." Glad to hear that Happy is in Pulse! this month. We'll be making a trip to the Annapolis Tower this week sometime to do some Xmas shopping, so I'll have to pick one up. I must say that I watched it and wasn't terribly impressed. Jewel couldn't just SING, could she? She has the perfect voice for Dorothy, if she would just SING instead of playing cutesy games with her voices. On the other hand, I saw her on VH1's Duets special (which was great and made by buy Joan Osborne's album by the way), and she was the best of the already great crew. But I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for Melissa Etheridge. No offense to Etheridge fans (I even like her, myself), but all the guest singers really kinda beat her hands down, vocally. So many topics.. so little time! Hello everyone! it's been quite some time since I've posted here - at least for me it's been as stretch - but I'm poking my little pointed head out to comment on a few current threads.... Queen "Made In Heaven" ******************************* First off.. Sherry (I think) was mentioning the new Queen release called "Made in Heaven" - I just picked that up this weekend as a matter of fact... and on first listen... give it a favorable review - at first because I miss Freddie Mercury terribly :-( what has it been now - 3 yrs since his passing? Listening to the quality of his singing - the man had not lost "it" - though his body was failing, though he was dying - that voice! that shining voice! especially on the opening song "It's a Beautiful Day".. it sent chills up my spine! Other highlights - eerie highlights especially - would be "Mother Love" (Brian's guitar is beautiful on this track as well!) - double triple chills up my spine at the end of that tune!!! The only disappointment at first "glance" would be - I hate to say - would be "Let Me Live".... Mostly because I don't think Roger's singing on it is all that great... and the backing choir didn't do anything for me. Another disappointment - though it isn't a major one - maybe is just my silly little stubborn brain - but "Too Much Love Will Kill You" doesn't sound the same with Freddie on vocals (sorry `luv)... My image of that song is Brian's gut wrenching rendition (I've always had a fondness for Brian May :-) ) I saw in a performance video for his "Back to the Light" tour. The whole CD has a sort of "lite rok" feel to it - but I am oh so very very glad that Brian (and Roger & John) had the courage, strength, etc. to put this stuff out.. One would think Freddie would have wanted it to be released ... "the show must go on!" and now she gently segues into Beatles..... I too sat spellbound in front of the tele watching the Beatles Anthology. I was one of those little punky kids of the Generation X (*ack*) who - while I missed the original Beatle-mania of the 60's due to default of birth year :-/ - still spent many many hours of my youth listening to Beatles records over and over and over again until I could pick the stuff apart (and talk just like one of the boys dissecting George's guitar solos..) I thought the stuff they dug out of the archives - the restored film footage that I (and my even more avid/sick Beatlefan friend Rob) had never seen - even in bootleg form - even at Beatlefest (and I've been to a few here in Chicago) was way way cool - the early concert footage - the interview footage - the restored stuff I had never seen from "Let It Be" (oops segue.... While watching - I had to dig out my England trip photographs again - to giggle at Amy standing in at the front door of the former site of Apple Records (Saville Row) and standing outside the wall at Abbey Road (while she says to herself... I am in a sacred place... the Goddess KaTe has been here ... the Beatles have been here.. etc. etc. etc.) . I can't wait for the extended jamorama video collection from the bottomless pit known as Apple Corps - something like 6 tapes - 12 hours or something ridiculously wonderful like that - with a book, etc. etc. due next year sometime. Also... with the CD Anthology releases - each store/retail chain seems to have a different promotional item they are giving away with each purchase. My friend Rob picked up the Anthology and got a free CD with interview stuff on it (and some of the Christmas recordings.. stuff like that) while another friend of mine picked her copy up at a different store (chain) and got a free Beatles phonecard with hers (with the cover of Abbey Road pictured on it) I *like* 'Free As A Bird" and "Real Love"..... I know they were originally John's tunes... and yeah.. they have Jeff Lynne-does-Phil Spectre written all over them.... but I really like them. I would say I like "Real Love" better than "Free As A Bird" but only because I think that the latter was a more finished composition - the quality of John's vocal takes was much much better - help me out guys - but wasn't that the tune that John was working on at the time of his death? (Real Love that is) ... I've heard the original "demos" for both tunes.. (she sheepishly admits to having friends who own copious amounts of Beatles b**tl*gs) and niether finished tune bears too much resemblance to the sparse demos that John left behind. I think that Macca is still (in spite of himself) a damn good composer/arranger... and I don't think he did John any disrespect by the finishing touches he put on the songs (okay... you purists can beg to differ with me and I won't take offense!) George's guitar work is still beautiful... (if I had been a teenager in the 1964-1968 era I would have SCREAMED for George... I jist LOVE that guy!!!) Ringo's drumming - well - the drums on the new singles unfortunately bears little resemblence to what Ringo is all about (the drums sound way too processed!) but it's the thought that counts, ultimately.. and I know that George - believe it or not - is in despearate need of funds right now ... his business manager cleaned him out... Yeh know he had to sell "Handmade Films" - the company he started to save the Monty Python films.... very very sad.... But I digress... The whole Anthology thang made me dig out my Revolver CD, and the "white album" and play at high volume :-) I had some thoughts about getting some of my gal pal musician friends together to do an all-girl Beatle band at Beatlefest (they have a Battle of the Bands competition - and you don't necessarily have to *sound* or *look* like the Beatles to win!) next year... We could call ourselves "Apple Tarts" ... and I would LOVE to do a cover of "I'm Down" (what a f*ck*in GREAT song to scream/sing!) ************************ someone else was asking about Primus..... what I've heard of them... I quite like.. like Soundgarden is to Led Zeppelin - Primus is to King Crimson... Les Claypool ROCKS on bass!!!! he plays almost "lead bass" so the tunes while they usually have irreverant and sometimes obnoxious lyrics - the music cooks - funky, fast.. smokin bass and guitar..... good housecleaning music! (the vocals kind of suck but the music is great!) I think that's it for the time being.... my life has been most amusing as of late - it's a long story - but let's just say - I've been sucked into the computer-romance vortex once again... and what a ride it has become! (wheeee!) Cheers to all - and let's not get too depressed about the weather okay? (my body is in Chicago *ack* but my heart is in ... well.. let's think.... how bout Mexico? or maybe Austrailia - it's really nice there eh?) I thought her singing was great (particularly on Jitterbug) and was amazed at her ability to imitate Judy Garland's speaking voice. She certainly had more stage presence than the rest of the "rock" performers, and looked completely comfortable on stage. But the guy playing the Cowardly Lion was probably the best. I had heard at one point that they weren't going to have a Cowardly Lion and I couldn't imagine the Wizard of Oz without him. Of the three Dorothy co-horts, he's definitely the most interesting character, and by far the best performed in this production. I also thought the Melissa Etheridge special was quite good. I agree with all the performers outsinging Melissa, except for maybe Sophie B. Paula Cole's stage presence still kind of bothers me, but her backing vocals on the Armatrading track were superb. The neatest part of the event for me was that it was filmed at the Doheny mansion, where Neal Copperman, myself, our friend Susan, and Jeff Wasiliko walked around prior to a wonderful Tori press conference and concert--a day that will always live in my mind as "Tori Day". Didn't get to see Jewel on the Lauren Hutton show, but am looking forward to Conan O'Brian--that's tomorrow night (the 28th) right? They had about the same power, and Sophie's voice has never been incredible (although it's really nice and I do like it), but it was pretty much better than Etheridge's, IMNSHO. The other singers had more power than Etheridge *and* a better voice, heh. ;) >Paula Cole's stage presence still kind of bothers me, but >her backing vocals on the Armatrading track were superb. I'm not thrilled with Paula Cole's particular act, myself. And it didn't help that they did "Watch The Woman's Hands" which is one of my least favorite songs off of Harbinger (never was thrilled with the chorus. Never told us who she was, or why we need her...). But I think her voice is fine and strong. Jewel's stage presence annoyed me as well, though. She seemed to be shrinking her shoulders into her head... and those faces... and though I'm thrilled that they did "Foolish Games" (my favorite song on "Pieces Of You", bar none), I kinda thought Jewel massacred parts of it with her cutesy voicing. And did anyone notice Etheridge messed up the lyrics like 4 times? She said "you'd talk of the ones you loved" instead of "you'd speak of your loved ones", and she also said "got" instead of "gone" once. Can't remember the other ones... >Didn't get to see Jewel on the Lauren Hutton show, but am looking >forward to Conan O'Brian--that's tomorrow night (the 28th) right? Yep!
