(too much loud music during mixes?) After all, Beethoven may have >been able still to compose music deaf, but a deaf record producer isn't >going to be able to do very much. I've heard that from other sources as well - but don't forget, George Martin obviously could still hear well enough to remaster and compile the Anthology material - unless of course he was relying on his engineer for sound evaluation and he relegated himself to the role of archivist. I've yet to see an article on the new Anthology that discusses the process of assembling the audio material. Mind you, the TV version of the Anthology completely skims over anything related to studio technique. >Then again, Martin really hasn't done >much work of note in decades in terms of production - he seemed to focus on >building studios and stuff during the late 70s and 80s. True, though he did work on quite a few records by bands such as America in the 70s, and did a fabulous job producing Ultravox's "Quartet" album in 1983. >>(b) I really don't think John Lennon would have appreciated that tape being >>released. He didn't >think it was particularly appropriate to be messing about with the tape. I'd side with Martin on this - though the tape was hardly "sacred" in itself, being basically a 1977 Lennon solo demo. The problem here is simply that it's being released under the name "The Beatles" when, depite technically being a Beatles record, it isn't. I've also heard that George Harrison wouldn't be involved unless Jeff Lynne did the production. If that's true, it shows how misguided Harrison has become - Lynne is hardly the most innovative producer in the world, hardly changig his technique at all through his entire career while other producers change according to the needs of the song. MY overriding impression from watching the Anthology in ragard to George Harrison, though, was that he's verging toward the arrogant these days... But on the George Martin matter; he was, like it or not, the fifth member of The Beatles, as important to what they created as the band themselves. Doing a "new" Beatles recording without him is foolish. Remember how Phil Spector destroyed the tapes for what was going to be the "Get Back" album when he remixed and re-produced them for "Let It Be"? - - Anthony (I want that Mellotron, Mr McCartney!! :-) - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au http://daemon.apana.org.au/~anthony/ Physical mail: P.O. First, I hope all my fellow American ectophiles had a great Thanksgiving. Now it's time to start thinking about Christmas... aieeee! Where did the year go?!? We just finished watching the Grinch on TV, so it's officially the Holiday Season... sigh. Lessee. Musical items of note: I finally tracked down a copy of Susan McKeown and the Chanting House's album _Bones_. It's every bit as brilliant as I thought it would be. Wowza. I would highly recommend this to anyone with even a passing interest in Rainbirds and Katell Keineg. McKeown's voice sometimes sounds frighteningly like Katharina Franck, and the songs have a sensibility similar to Katell's. The disc is just one amazing track after another. Definitely one of the best of the year. She's playing at Fez on Tuesday, I think -- we're there! Now we're watching Jewel (and a bunch of other unknowns ;) in the Wizard of Oz thing. Does *anybody* know just HOW she landed that gig?!?!? (Gotta love the attempt at nailing Judy Garland's accent there. I wonder where she got that idea.) Backtracking a bit here... it's been a while since I've had a chance to even read my mail, never mind reply to it. I think I need three of me. Dunno about the content, but I would expect some of it to be "seasonal" music, not all of it. Which reminds me: Sarah McLachlan was on the Columbia Records Radio Hour last week. I'm 99% positive they just chopped up her WNEW live broadcast from September for it. Too bad, since her career got its start on the strength of her fiddling and just how damn good she was at such a young age. She's one of those people who make me ill. She's what, 23? And she's already got a bunch of albums, a Grammy thanks to her work with the Cox Family, and an impressive resume on the production side going as well. Argh. I (and Tamar and a few other folks) saw King Crimson in New Haven last Saturday night, the day before the song was "premiered" on ABC. About halfway through the show Adrian Belew did a solo number apparently called "Free As A Bird", which he claimed was a sneak preview of what the world would be hearing the next night. We thought he was bullshitting us and his story about having been given a copy of the demo tape by John Lennon almost 20 years ago was a huge line, but we gave Belew credit for coming up with a passable, albeit lame Lennon-esque song and forgot about it. Until the next night, that is. My friend happened to tune in to the end of the Beatles Anthology when they aired the song, and we just about died of laughter. Belew wasn't kidding! (But the song is still lame.) Apparently, Belew has been singing "Free As A Bird" on the King Crimson tour at least since August, when my friend first saw them in Munich. Then he claimed it was a song he had found in John Lennon's house, or something like that. chandra implored: > help!!! i really want to get the keep, but have been unable to find it > in any stores here. i have tried emailing ag, but gotten no response. > am i doing the right thing if i email auralg@aol.com?
