Hiya, I'm going to be in Sydney for work Monday and Tuesday next week, and I'm currently fishing around for something to do on Monday night - if there are any Sydney folk out there who can recommend something, 'twould be much appreciated. (It's my 25th birthday that day, and I really don't feel like spending the evening working or sitting in a hotel room :-/) If anyone's keeping a list of ecto-friendly CD stores, add Basement Discs in Melbourne to the list - I found that they had not only Ani Difranco's latest, but also The Keep in stock. I bought both, although I listened to Ani's first. Happy's CD I felt confident buying unheard. :) I really like the Ani Difranco CD. It's got enough strange bits on it to keep me interested, and the music is good stuff too. I would give a track by track review, but I've lent the CD to someone else at the moment. :) The Keep - well, I'm preaching to the converted here, but wowowowow. I will note that my housemate has bought himself a Sony Playstation, and one of the demos that come with it is called 'VCD' - it plays CDs, and animates these strange shapes on the screen using the music to affect how it does the animation. Some of the effects are truly bizarre, and best appreciated at 1am when slightly buzzed. The Keep produces some strange relaxing patterns - usually things like techno and dance make the screen move a fair bit, but the slower music is also interesting... After listening to the Keep about 3 or 4 times end to end I then had to go and listen to the older ones, of course. A great way to listen to them, I've found, is lying in a bath full of wierd bubble gunk, with lots of candles everywhere, and Happy on the CD player. I've also ordered in a copy of AG Ambient 1. Been meaning to do it for a while, but I've been holding off, trying to save some money (I know, strange - I'm better now :) Max Sharam is playing next weekend here - that should be fun. Any other Melbournians planning to go? Belated happy turkey day to the merkins out there... Dawn French has also been in a show recently called, umm.. damn, lost it - Vicar of Dibley or something? Worth a look. French & Saunders was great British comedy... the two of them were also involved with the Comic Strip presents... shows, along with many, many other British comedians. Some of it is great stuff (Mr Jolly Lives Next Door, with Peter Cook, is a particular fave :) As far as Kate video's being out of print, I found a copy of the video of The Whole Story about a year or so ago - it may have been in a second hand store, but I thought I'd actually bought it new. Maybe I just got lucky. Hmm, I hadda quick look at a Web music store (cdnow) and they list a couple of videos - one called 'Single File' which seems to be a video compilation, and also a few laserdiscs (not that that helps many people - do many folks out there actually own laserdisc players? I figure Anthony H. probably does :), but how common are they?) On the subject of the Rutles - at the comedy night we went to at a local pub last Wednesday, to celebrate the Beatles Anthology they were playing bits of The Rutles movie between sets. There was also a Rutles book - but that's going to be one of those almost- impossible-to-find things. Ooo. I thought to look up 'Rutles' in the search field on the cd store, and there was a 1990 CD re-issue of the album. Must buy :) Anthony ------------------------------ From: Michael Colford Date: Fri, 24 Nov 1995 07:54:43 -0500 (EST) Subject: 54-40/I go blind + The Keep! Not really ecto stuff, but I had to mention this. I was driving to work this morning and imagine my surprise when the opening strains to a much loved (never played on radio nowadays) song, _I go blind_ began on my radio! I am a big 54-40 fan, and this song is terrific. However, once the vocals began I realized it wasn't 54-40! I suspected Hootie and the blowfish, and my suspicions were confirmed with the radio announcement! I kind of mixed feelings about this, since 54-40 is just so woefully overlooked in the States, and now this song will probably become more popular due to Hootie & co. Oh well, at least 54-40 might make some money from it. On a Happy note, for those of you in libraries and bookstores, I got my copies of The Keep through Baker & Taylor, and large book distributor. The Baker & Taylor order number for the Keep is 6303869831. B&T also has three other HR discs in stock! Take it easy! Okay, not really on-topic, but I'm remembering now, so I gotta take what I can get... has anyone heard Cher's cover of 'Walking in Memphis'? They were showing the clip on one of those morning countdown shows the other morning, I had to run in horror! So I didn't get to hear it, and maybe she did a nice job of it... but then again, maybe she didn't. :) Also while I'm remembering, Toni Childs has got a 'Greatest Hits' album out here (is it just here, or available everywhere?). I think it's one of them nasty Christmas ploys... considering that Toni's only released 3 albums, and the compilation has 6 (I think) songs from her first album, 4 from her second, one soundtrack song, and NOTHING from her latest album. Well, she was a little more famous over here - 'Stop Your Fussin' went top 5, I think, and her second single 'Dont Walk Away' got quite a lot of radio play... From her second album, 'I've Got To Go Now' went top 10, and I think 'House Of Hope' charted pretty well too. Her third album went pretty much nowhere though, I think... This is all going from memory, but Toni's pretty famous over here in terms of commercial exposure. Actually, the reason the codes were discontinued was that too many records were coming out with false DDD codes to try and impress people when there had in fact been an analog stage in the process somewhere. I always found the code fairly redundant; the idea behind it was that a DDD recording is always going to sound better than an AAD recording. Not always true. And also, the final "D" is totally superfluous - it represents the format used for mastering, and as wel all know, you can't master for CD on analog tape! (b) I really don't think John Lennon would have appreciated that tape being released. I don't think he ever thought it would be. Otherwise, he would have sung better. :-) For the record, the first ever cover version of "Free As A Bird" was performed by Sydney grunge/pop band Big Heavy Stuff on Thursday night on the "Denton" chat show. :) Meanwhile the second "new" Beatles song "Real Love" (the original source demo of which is the first track on the "Imagine" film soundtrack album!) didn't seem to work at all. But I can see myself getting all excited over rare mixes, lost tapes, etc, with the next two "Anthology" CDs, just like I did with that "Rarities" album Capitol brought out years ago - and that one they simply sourced from released records and promos. The best thing about the Anthology CDs is that they've done the completely logical I-should-have-thought- of-that-before thing and sent George Martin into the archives. - - Anthony - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au http://daemon.apana.org.au/~anthony/ Physical mail: P.O. I think I read somewhere that Martin has gone more or less deaf, which is a shame. (too much loud music during mixes?) After all, Beethoven may have been able still to compose music deaf, but a deaf record producer isn't going to be able to do very much. Then again, Martin really hasn't done much work of note in decades in terms of production - he seemed to focus on building studios and stuff during the late 70s and 80s. >(b) I really don't think John Lennon would have appreciated that tape being >released.
