At 7:00 p.m. that same evening, VH-1 will be airing the hour long Melissa Etheridge Duets Special with duets by Melissa and Jewel, Joan Osborne, Sophie B. Hawkins and Paula Cole. Both shows will be repeated several times over the next couple of weeks. Jewel will also be on Conan O'Brian on the 28th of this month. Sure, it's ten minutes long, but it's a great way to spend ten minutes. Lots of Red House Painters tunes would suffice as well, but this is my favorite. "How Fortunate The Man With None" by Dead Can Dance. If you don't mind Brendan Perry's nouveau-Neil-Diamond-type voice, that is. I know I don't. "Here He Comes" by Brian Eno (from _Before And After Science_) "Espana" by Patrick O'Hearn from _Indigo_, if you don't mind an instrumental. The whole album is dark and hypnotic, with none of the watered-down romanticism found in typical new age records (like J*hn T*sh). "the white tent the raft" by Jane Siberry. Goes without saying. Hey! Oh well, back to Repo >records... :-) Well, at least that compile is readily available in the US. It was media-only here and in the UK. The longer version of "Fine Friend" has a quiet pause in the middle of the song and a longer outro; it's hard to listen to the short version now without missing them. It runs for 5:44, while the album and single version runs 4:04. On the Pale Saints, I did an interview when that album came out with... their drummer! Who had NO idea about anything the band were doing (or didn't want to talk about it) and seemed genuinely puzzled when I pointed out that a whole pile of track running times listed on the back cover of "Slow Buildings" do not correspond to the actual track times on the disc. He said it must be a misprint, but the later discovery of the long "Fine Friend" pretty much confirms that "Slow Buildings" was heavily edited before being released. A shame. It does indeed exist - it was in PolyGram's very first CD catalog in Europe, and I actually held a copy in my hands for a couple of days years ago. It's true that the first Visage album on CD (which, incidentally, is still available *everywhere*) sounded fairly average, but it was a pretty bad recording originally, done very cheaply. "The Anvil" had a much bigger budget, and being recorded in between Ultravox's "Rage In Eden" and "Quartet" as it was, a much higher profile thanks to the involvement of Midge Ure and Billy Currie (it's pretty much their album, too, with minimal input from the other members - though Barry Adamson does get to do some of his trademark bass guitar stuff). But I digress. :) Anyway, "The Anvil" on vinyl sounded fine sonically, but suffered from massive tape noise, audible above the vinyl surface noise. The CD was a direct transfer from the vinyl master and suffered from high hiss levels as well. I'd happily settle for a copy of the original CD, but if someone at Oglio or Rhino wants to reissue the album, I'd happily volunteer to track down the original tapes and supervise the remastering. I was very pleased to find that it wasn't a piece of crap. However, it also very much is the Beatles through the eyes of Jeff Lynne. His stamp is all over the piece. Now that isn't necessarily a bad thing, since Lynne somewhat made a career of ripping off the Beatles. Also, Lynne likes to work in pieces, so the thought of putting together this jigsaw puzzle of a song must've been very attractive to him. The video also is quite excellent.
