Wow, I get to mention Lush in *two* messages! :-) If you liked the "Desire Lines" EP, you'll *love* the album it's from, "Split". One of the best records of its year, and easily the finest thing Lush have ever done. There were 16 tracks recorded for "Split"; 12 are on the album, "Desire Lines" has the non-album tracks "White Wood" and "Girl's World", and the "Hypocrite" EP (released at the same time as the other EP) contains the non-album track "Cat's Chorus". That leaves one remaining, a track Miki said at the time probably would never get a release. But it did, in a way - called "Childcatcher", it appeared on the 4AD sampler "All Virgos Are Mad", which apparently was sold retail in the US, though it wasn't supposed to be. That sampler, by the way, also contains the only full version of Pale Saints' "Fine Friend". Even the Pale Saints album has a shorter version (the 7" edit). > does anyone out there have the UK version of tori's video >cornflake girl video? i promised him i would try to track it down for >him. I would definitely recommend "Wonderful Life" as a starting point (preferably the UK version if you can find it) followed by "Are We...", then "Comedy", and finally the truly uninspired and rather awful final A&M album "Black". Colin had much to say on the way his deal with A&M led to creative bankruptcy in an interview I did with him for the release of "Are We..."; it never got published, but I still have the tape around somewhere and can dig it up for interested people. >6. After not buying a CD from a store for close to six weeks (or maybe it was a bit more than six weeks? It's been so long I've lost track), I armed myself with a long list of required listening mostly gathered from this list and headed off to the nearest Tower (by Fair Oaks; ten minutes away, five if folks wouldn't always get in my way). I must say, their selection of required listening isn't all that great. They had *one* Happy Rhodes CD (filed under R, yes) -- Warpaint. No sign of anything else of hers around. Of course, The Keep is on the required listening bit (some folks say they don't really like Happy's music; while I'm not one to expound on the artistic virtues, I do like it). I achieved a few kills, namely Ani DiFranco and Lisa Gerrard (expensive little CD, that). No sign of Holly Cole, and I, er, forgot about Sophie Hawkins. Well, I'll be around the Rockville Tower at the end of the week, and Jeffy *did* say he left a few copies, so maybe I can score then. This tape is labeled Hypno Rock. Certain songs flow in a round-about and hypnotic manner. Not too sing-song and not too sedate. I'll list some favorites that will be returning to service on the new tape, if you're familiar with several you'll have a good idea of what I am after. The 1 and only Kim Carnes tune I can stand is 1 I love: Turn of the Cards. Surrender Your Heart by Missing Persons. The Main Thing: Roxy Music. What Goes Around: Shadowfax. Farmer's Daughter: Fleetwood Mac. Good Friends: Joni Mitchel. Lucky 7: Steve Howe. Lucille: Frank Zappa. Charlie Don't Surf: Clash. Got It Made: Crosby,Stills And Nash. An American in London: Gong. This is a car tape, so *too* sedate can be dangerous. I hope that some of these strike resonsive chords in some of you and you can bring some gems to my attention. My thanks and/or copies will/can go out to you. Was I wrong! I couldn't move myself away from the TV set all night -- the documentary was one of the most interesting things I've seen on TV in awhile. (It even ranked favorably with Hoop Dreams, which I watched on PBS later that night). I thought it did a great job of explaining what it must have felt like being a Beatle in the early days. And I never before had realized how YOUNG they all were, and what a short period of time their success occurred in. Some negatives: why did they skim over Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best? And what happened to Cynthia Lennon? And that cheesy countdown to the "new" Beatle song was horrible. As for the song, I was a little disappointed. It was in the same style as many of their other songs -- surprising, since 25 years have passed! I must correct, though, the mention of the song in the last digest of Ecto: "Bye Moon" was not Happy's first recording. "Prey of the Strange" is listed as Happy's first studio recording. Also, I believe that the chorus of "Bye Moon" says "On quarter moon my harlequin is laughing.......". I don't know, but that's what it sounds like to me, and seems to make more sense. If you don't have "The Keep", you must get it. It is definately a great album, and it was made for the fans.
