Ok, ok, check out: http://weber.u.washington.edu/~neile/EctoGuide/arson.garden.html I haven't announced the general availability of the Guide because heck, we haven't even got the page for Happy available yet. Any info >in the ectophiels guide on them, Neile? Snap 'em up! Arson Garden was a rather crunchy band from Bloomington, Indiana. They put out 3 albums (_Under Towers_, from which I put a track on one of the H*P tapes a few years ago, _Wisteria_, and _The Belle Stompe_), a CD single ("Drink a Drink of You" (or is that 'me'?), and a tape they released in Bloomington back in....um...'88 maybe? The first and third albums are the best. I've never particularly liked _Wisteria_. Mostly female vocals from April Combs, with occasional male vox. Lots of neat rhythms, time changes, and general weirdness. The Cybermind list recently went to kicking to the moderator all posts sent from an address spelled differently than in the subscription list (even if it's really the same address)--the result of a problem with bombthrowing posts, rather than commercial spam--and the moderators say they find it a nuisance, albeit unavoidable. BTW, WRT some people's disaffection with ectophiles reposting stuff here on political or other offtopic issues: I too think that simple pointers to such stuff elsewhere would be preferable; but I think there's a qualitative difference between subscribers reposting stuff about issues they care about, and outsiders posting stuff indiscriminately to a whole laundry list of lists. One, I think, was a physics professor!! I saw that too. Interesting music was nigh impossible to hear in this town in the '77-'90 era, and still largely is. We had the worst radio choices of any city I know of, with all of the rock stations niched into Metal, AOR, EZ Listening and Country. Only recently did the "alternative" format establish here, and it too locked itself into a tightly defined playlist that is not very ecto-friendly. Only the listener-supported KBOO provided a source, and only certain programmers at odd hours. Still, it was enough in the pre-Internet days to let me know what was going on. I missed the first four years of MTV until I moved into an area with cable. Ironically, the stations that wouldn't play '80s music then are playing it now as oldies. |^^^^^^Please don't add "*@aol.com" to your twit filter. I've transcribed my Sarah McLachlan interview and can now offer those interested a copy of it - I won't post it, as it's, well, a bit big (runs to about 4500 words). So if anyone would like a copy, drop me some mail and let me know what format you want it in and how you'd like it encoded through the mail. Format options are Word For Windows 6/7 (original), all other Word versions, all WordPerfect versions, Rich Text Format (RTF) and, if you're REALLY brave, plain text (it won't be easy to read in plain text format, as bold/italics/etc will be lost). Preferred formats are Word 6/7 or RTF. Encoding options are MIME Base64 or BinHex, and uuencode. Those who request the file, I'd appreciate it if you'd keep it to yourself rather than post it anywhere - usual copyright paranoia reasons :) Comments are encouraged. The article derived from the interview will be available at Beat's web site (http://www.ozonline.com.au/beat/) from Thursday 16th until Wednesday 22nd, Australian dates. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Gaelic music ala Clannad, Loreena McKennit, etc. and people interested in the Gregorian Chants and Anonymous 4 type music. This CD is a blending of all those styles, by some great vocalists. Plus itincludes some beautiful harp playing as well as several other different instruments. It's one of the most consistently beautiful albums I've heard. Very diverse, but the different styles all work together very nicely. Warning: there are male vocals on the album! :) But even they're good. Of the 21 CDs I bought this weekend, this (at least so far) is definitely the standout. (And yes, EWS is definitely in effect!) Jeff Hanson ------------------------------ From: petite piquet Date: Wed, 15 Nov 1995 01:09:41 +1100 (EST) Subject: Wow, oh WOW, OH WOW WOW! OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD SARAH SARAH SARAH!!! ( I *had* to do it, Laurel. :) I just came back from seeing Sarah McLachlan and The Chieftains in concert, and it.... it was FABULOUS. Sarah was brilliantly wonderfully wonderfully brilliant... she looked good (dressed all in black), and sounded GREAT. Her voice was wonderful, it was spot on and beautiful and expressive and it almost made me cry... well, it *did* make me cry, okay, I admit. She had Ashwin Sood and Brian Minato with her... wonderful! She played a fairly short set, including one song on electric guitar: "Because this is our first trip down here, we wanted to give you a more rounded idea of what we're all about". The setlist, if I remember rightly: - - Possession, solo on piano - "I'm gonna start with a solo song of mine called Possession"... at which point I stopped breathing... - - Good Enough - "Kind of a song about sisterhood"... gad, what a beautiful song, I got all teary during this; - - I Will Remember You, first time I'd heard this in it's entirety, lovely! - - Wait - "A song about losing your innocence" (which is, I guess more than we knew before *grin*); - - The Path Of Thorns (Terms) - I love this song! - - Ice Cream - "Most of my songs are about love, and splitting up of relationships, except this one. It doesn't have a sad ending... yet!"... what a good fun romp this song is :)... - - Full Of Grace - "The most depressing song I ever wrote, I wrote this for a movie but it didn't make it... which was good because the movie sucked!!" (What movie was this, BTW?) - I'd never heard this before, but it was lovely. That was it... 7 songs. She got quite a nice reception from the crowd, who listened quietly and clapped... there were some whistles from up the back of the hall, where I think there were a few Canadians and/or Americans come to see the show. Most of the folks at the concert probably hadn't ever heard of Sarah - well, I hope they go out and buy all her albums now! :) Overheard during intermission: "Gosh, she were a bit morose, weren't she?!" *grin* Despite only seeing such a short set, it was a religious experience for me. (I LOVE SARAH I LOVE SARAH I LOVE SARAH :) And I take back everything bad I ever said about the Sydney Town Hall as a music venue. The acoustics in there are *EXCELLENT*, Sarah's voice and piano filled the whole hall and it was absolutely gorgeous. I'd say there were about 1800-2000 seats in the hall altogether, and it was about 4/5 full for Sarah's set. The hall filled right up for The Chieftains though. What a wonderful wondeful performance!!! They had my foot tapping all the way through, and their music is wonderful and expressive and lots of fun, and their musicianship is astounding! They played for most of two hours, and I enjoyed every second of it. I've only heard one of their albums, 'The Long Black Veil' - they did a couple of songs from there, but most were, I guess, traditional Irish tunes or songs from previous albums. They played mostly instrumentals, ranging from ballad-y, to tunes that were just SO MUCH FUN that they had your feet tapping and you didn't even realize it! Sarah came out to sing 'The Foggy Dew' with them (absolutely gorgeous, of course), and stayed onstage to sing/play in the finale, a huge improvisatory showcase which was the most fun of the whole evening. They also brought 'special guest' Carlos Nunez (why does this name sound so familiar?) out to play on a couple of songs... oh, and there were a couple of (I guess) traditional Irish dancers... wow. :) Gad, I'm gushing, I'll stop now. Suffice to say that this was one of the best concerts I've ever ever ever seen, and I hope that they have tickets left for the Canberra concert on Sunday, because I WANT TO GO! :) And (I'm talking to *you* here cuffy *grin*) if you have the opportunity to see this show and you're not sure... don't hesitate!! GO GO GO!! You'll love it, trust me. All these artists don't sing in English except for Velvet Belly and Weld. All are highly recommended though. If you want to try something really interesting - 3rd & The Mortal - Sorrow (No. 70027 - EP) Tears Laid In Earth (No. 79321) Nightswan (No. 90515 - EP) The line-up on the two first CDs is interesting indeed - an old 3 guitars, bass and drums Thrash band with a classical trained female vocalist/keyboardist. I saw them live in Trondheim last year and except for the bad sound equipment they had at the location they sounded pretty good. She has quit the band now and is about to release an album which is supposed to be a mix between Enya and norwegian folk music - I'm definitly going to buy that album. I haven't heard what the new female singer in the band sounds like so I can't say if she is good or not ... hugs, ________________________________________________________________ Yngve Hauge | __ ___ __ | | _ www: http://ulke.himolde.no/~yngveh/ |-- | | | ||-- |_||| |_ Irc-nick: One Alien |__ |__ | |__|| | |||_|_ ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V2 #282 ************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to ecto-owner@nsmx.rutgers.edu
