Yup. 'Twas as much a shock to hear "Posession" there as it was in _Due North_. Another song that was used was "Lightning Crashes" (heh...in an episode dealing with death by electrocution) by Live -- a band footah!ed here (with a couple of seconds) a number of months ago. I wouldn't quite consider Live an ectophilic band, but hey, _Throwing Copper_'s been discussed, so I thought I'd mention it. >Tonight's episode also featured something very ectophilic that >I've never heard before. If anyone saw it, can they identify it? A portion of Loreena's "The Mystic's Dream" from _The Mask and the Mirror_. The song has two or three minutes of mostly choral introduction before the portion that was played. It occurs to me to wonder if _Strange Luck_ might have the musical director from _Due North_. They can spam subscribe messages as easilly as they can spam posts, so it really wouldn't be much work for them to spam subs, send their posts, and spam unsub messages. I've just set my lists to take posts from list members only, but I do that realizing it really wouldn't do a damned thing to stop a spammer if all the other listowners do it. If only a few lists do it, then the spammers aren't going to go readjust their operation, but if all lists are closed to non-members they'll just switch to subbing before spamming. I think what is really needed now that list spamming has become increasly popular is for majordomo/listserv/etc. operators to deactivate the lists command. That's how spammers get their sender lists--directly from the server. While I agree with Neil K. and Steve VanDevender that postings like that are awfully doggone annoying (I got five copies and found every one of them to be offensive), there's really no way to stop it. Limiting Ecto to subscribers only will affect several people who read Ecto from local gateway addresses, including local newsgroups. And, as was pointed out, not everyone uses the same address all the time (or even can be assured that their outgoing Email will come from the same address -- one tweak to that sendmail.cf file for "improvements" and all bets are off). Besides, if you wish to take the argument to extremes, if someone wishes to be a pain, they can bypass any sort of sendmail security because, well, there is none. The only way to verify that someone was in fact the sender of a message is to use some sort of electronic signature. The state of signature technology is not quite ready for Internet-wide scale deployment yet. I agree with Phil Clark on the matter -- it happens very little so it should be just quietly ignored, perhaps with a note to the postmaster. I broke that rule myself by sending the poster (not postmaster) a not-so-polite note asking him to cut the crap (hasn't been a very fun month for me). Sending someone 20 megabytes of stuff may make you feel better, but could affect lots of other innocent people by clogging up system resources all over. If we don't complain, nothing gets done. (2) The person responsible for this attack has had his account removed, and is being billed for the time taken by his ISP to deal with the mess. McCarley (Executive Producer) > NineLineCo@AOL.com :) :) :) :) :) Well, that just made my day. :) :) :) :) :) I hope he'll keep me posted when they find distribution -- I will, of course, pass along whatever I hear. Listening to new music today. woj picked up Emmylou Harris & Daniel Lanois' _Wrecking Ball_ (yes, I know it's officially Emmylou's album, but it's more his than hers), which is stunning, amazing, ; Victoria Williams' live one, which we're listening to right now and is great stuff (see you tomorrow night, Nick!); and Loreena's new EP, which is next on the pile and *is* new -- it was recorded this July at Real World studios and just came out this week. [I've been thinking about making a tape of Christmas/Solstice season songs recorded by my favorite artists -- I certainly have the material for it, between Loreena and the folks on Count Your Blessings and even Happy, and that's only scratching the surface. If I did this, would there be interest if I sent it to the Tape Dubbing Project?] Emmylou Harris and Daniel Lanois were at the Beacon Theatre last night, but we didn't go -- if we had gotten her album a few weeks earlier I think we may have gone. David Sylvian is at Town Hall tonight, but I only pay $30 to see one of my Supreme Goddesses, thanks. We definitely have reservations to see Victoria at Fez tomorrow night, though. That's going to be great -- I hope there aren't too many squid in attendance. :P Coming up this week is Bjork on Tuesday and King Crimson on Saturday, both at the Palace Theater in New Haven. Any other 'philes attending either show? I'm not overly excited about Bjork right now, but I think it will be a fun show nonetheless. The audience is going to suck, but that's a given for shows at the Palace. Sigh. In other news, I saw posted to rec.music.gaffa that a live Loreena McKennitt show is going to be broadcast nationwide sometime within the next few weeks. WFUV has been mumbling things about "a very special live broadcast" coming up the final week of November, and seeing as this Loreena show will be brought to us by the same people who did the Joni Mitchell and Elvis Costello broad- casts earlier this year, both of which WFUV also carried, I think that's what they're talking about. I'll post whenever I hear details -- hopefully I can get a list of stations carrying it nationwide, or at least find out where such a list can be found. (Of course, if Rita Houston and/or Ben Soper of WFUV are still getting ecto digests and would like to provide some more details, I invite one or both of them to do so... :) However, the ecto news machine failed me for the first time this week, I'm afraid. Nick, you obviously knew about the Joni Mitchell thing at Fez before it happened -- *why* didn't you say anything?!? I would've gone to whatever lengths were necessary to go to that show! (Not that being in the presence of a loud drunken Chrissie Hynde is overly appealing, but still... it's Joni Mitchell, who almost never plays live any more!) I heard about it the next morning, and just about died. Ah well. Can't make it to everything, I guess. irvin commented: > so yes folk should be listed under alternative, alternative to > what, alternative to aor music. besides other folk artists made the cut > like michelle shocked, and if you listen to her last album, 99Fo some of > it wasn't really all that "folk" if you asked me.... Erm, well, as chandra already pointed out _99.9F_ is *Suzanne Vega*'s album. And if you're like me and think the whole concept of genres is silly, then the entire argument becomes useless... Mark Salamon wondered: > by the way, is there anyone on this list besides me from the west coast? There are a bunch more ectophiles from San Diego to Seattle, so no, you are far from alone! Yngve replied about Bel Canto's "new" album: > Working on? It was released a couple of months ago me thinks. Hmmm, title? > *urk* I just can't remember right now. I'll check it out as soon as I can. Yeah, it was released in Norway, maybe, but it'll never see the light of day anywhere else! We've been waiting for the damn thing for, oh, two and a half years now? At this point, I'm going to interject a plea: Anthony, PLEASE send me your transcription of your Sarah interview, even if you don't post it to the entire list! (Incidentally, I hate you. ;) The Jane-or-Ani thing seems to be past, but just let me chime in to say that if I were in the same position I'd go to see Jane, for the reasons Jeff and Tamar stated: she never does the same type of show twice, and she comes around a lot less often. You'll definitely have several chances to see Ani again. Incidentally, I've been obsessing over Ani's _Not A Pretty Girl_ for a long time now -- I thought I'd get over it in a few days, but it's been weeks. I listen to it almost every day, sometimes more than once. What an amazing disc. Wow. Neil K. (who is confused regarding Ani, imnsho ;) inquired: > Do other people think it might be advisable to restrict the Ecto to lists > to accept only posts from members? Yes. Even if eventually every list is configured that way and the spammers automatically get around it every time, we'll at least have some respite until the time comes. It may inconvenience those few of us who get the list on multiple addresses, but I don't think that would be too hard to get around. It's way past time for something to be done. I loved that song and desperately wanted to know who it was. The only information I gleaned from the credits is that Mark Mothersbaugh (an ex-member of Devo, as I recall) is responsible for their music. There were a couple of other music consultants whose names went by too fast to see. In any case, they have better taste in music that most of the other shows I watch.
