I installed Win95 over my old Windows 3.11 setup, and when my machine boots, I get that old familar annoying "tinkle" sound. But I have seen other people's machines (and the "about" menu on MS Office apps!) boot up with another, longer sound. You'll find it on your root drive as "C:\Windows\Media\The Microsoft Sound". One show prominently featured the "surprise" acoustic version of "Posession" from _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_, mixed up where you could actually hear it. Tonight's episode also featured something very ectophilic that I've never heard before. If anyone saw it, can they identify it? I'm hoping they'll at least mention it in the credits. The only thing different there is that Ani's definately not an introspective performer; she's very extroverted and out there. But her songs *do* cover a HUGE range of topics, thoughts, emotions, and the like. She can be a political ranter, or a storyteller, or a woman in love, or a woman pissed off. She can be vulnerable or tough, or aggressive, or quiet. And everything she's ever written is thoughtful. Jaw dropping lyrics, and more honesty, both political and personal, than you're like to get from ANY other artist, even those reknown for writing from their lives like Tori Amos. >To be fair, I've never heard Ani live - just a bunch of her recordings. But her >style in studio seemed to be generally either aggressive and angry or >pissed-off and noisy, banging away on her guitar. I'd be interested in knowing which recordings you've heard. Her first two albums are straight folk, her third and fouth, aggressive folk, her fifth and sixth (discounting "Like I Said") are... the most varied of her recordings for sure, going from pop to rock (and rock operas!) to folk with the press of the "skip" button. It'd be hard to label "You Had Time" aggressive or angry or pissed off or noisy; it's one of the saddest, and *quietest* songs I've ever heard. It'd be just as hard to label "What If No One's Watching" angry, pissed off, or noisy. She's EXTREMELY versitile, both on CD and live. >(okay, okay - so I'm no big fan of her guitar antics) Fair enough, but to continue the fairness, Ani's the best guitarist I've ever personally heard, and one of the best guitarists in the biz today, with a style totally her own. It's incredible how she can sing and play without either aspect suffering in the slightest, and the emotional impact of her playing and her lyrics combined can leave someone absolutely floored. >I suspect her live performances are less tiresomely >single-tracked - her recordings aren't single tracked at all. If you look at her entire body of work, she covers more musical territory than the vast majority of musicians. And while a given album will tend to be similar from track to track, so will a given Jane album, or a given Happy album, or a given Sarah McLachlan album... etc. >I've heard a long interview with her and she seemed quite >cheery and personable - but regardless I anticipate a rather different mood to >her shows than a Jane show. She is very cheery and personable. She'll talk in the middle of songs, or tell a joke and a story, or chat about how she can't play that request because she's forgotten the tune. I saw her last month, and she started a song called "As Is", the chorus to which is various vocal inflections of "As is". Suddenly, during the chorus, she broke into giggles and announced that she felt like a muppet making all those weird sounds for the chorus. So, what it comes down to, it seems, is if one wants spiritual experiance, feeling like an audience, or a friendly experiance feeling like a friend of the performer. - -Ariel ------------------------------ From: Peter Quizert Date: Fri, 10 Nov 1995 23:32:58 -0700 (MST) Subject: Are You Preapred? The main problem with restricting Ecto to subscribers-only posting would be for anyone who normally posts to Ecto from more than one address, or posts from an address different than their subscription address. Otherwise, it seems very rare for anyone not on the list to post to it, so if no one will be greatly inconvenienced by the only-members-can-post restriction, I'd say go for it. The first time I saw Peter Quizert's post I sent a curt but reasonably polite reply back to him and his postmaster.
