Shawn is awesome! She's pretty folk-y, with just a touch of pleasant country influence (in general I loathe country music, but Shawn is _so_ smooth she makes it work for me); a lot of her songs are actually ballads, both the up-tempo and slow kind. Her first two albums (_Steady On_, which won her a Grammy; and _Fat City_, the same style but more mature) are constantly on my play list. Her all-cover album _Cover Girl_ shows the tremendous variety of her musical stylings, and the recent _Live '88_ gives an excellent sample of her solo live shows. Friends and I who adore KaTe, Happy, Jewel, Milla, et. al. are really impressed by Shawn's work. We've seen her in concert three times, and one of those concerts falls in my all-time top ten of the last 25 years of concertgoing. (I feel like I'm underwater, gleb gleb gleb) Unless I've missed something recently, the last Michelle Shocked album was Kind Hearted Woman. It came out in 1994, and is a stark, stripped down album. It's probably most reminiscent of Texas Campfire Tapes, except that the songwriting is much more mature, as is her voice. It's an incredibly powerful and moving disc, that may well be my favorite of hers. However, it's so dark and depressing that I might pick a different one just for the mood. Figuring it would have limited appeal, her record company refused to release it, but did give her the rights to do so herself. (Don't you love it when record companies don't put out something incredible when it's not just what they want?) Anyway, you used to be able to order it from: Michelle Shocked Fan Conspiracy 409 N Pacific Coast Hwy #484 Redondo Beach CA 90277 I can't guarantee you that is still true. It was about a year ago. Don't know how much money you should send either, but it's probably about $16 ($15 for the disc and $1 for postage). Hope that's what you wanted. He's most famous for his membership in the Paul Winter Consort, but has also put out a couple solo albums, one of which, _New Friend_, is quite good. Pick it up if you see it in the cutout rack. His only other album I'm aware of, _Arms Around You_, is mostly pretty cringe-worthy; half the time he "scats" along with his playing, and it ends up sounding pretty preposterous. Yeah, but then again, I have the same opinion of Ani's shows; the most wonderful performance I've ever seen. Now, I haven't seen many, but I HAVE seen Happy, Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan, who are all incredible performers, and all pale in comparison to the folk goddess supreme. But, it does depend on who's music one would prefer if one DID know the two's music. So, in the interest of actually helping the person in the predicament: Jane Siberry is a versitile performer, usually plays quirky, semi-spiritual music that can be anything from jazz to pop to country to folk. She's got an interesting voice; not quite beautiful, but very attractive and unique, and she's definately very talented. There's no one to compare her with really, as she's completely herself. I haven't seen Jane live, though, so I can't say what she's like live. Ani DiFranco is also a versitile performer, but usually sticks with a unique blend of folk and punk. She writes politics and personal confessions, and performs with just herself and a guitar, backed by a guy with drums. She also does spoken word poems, usually backed by some form of drumming, and straight folk. In concert, she doesn't really sing so much as sing-speak. Very aggressive and theatrical. >It might depend a bit on whose music you'd prefer if you _had_ heard either of >them, but I have to agree with Vickie -- noone should ever miss a chance to see >Jane live!
