OK, here goes: Speaking of Quarterflash -- what ever happened to? Their second album (I forget the name) was pretty disappointing, but I thought their third one, _Back Into Blue_, was pretty good. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at playing "what happened to," but someone in Seattle might know, since that's where Q'flash were from. My guess is that their albums stopped selling and they got dropped by their label... I hope everyone who loves '80s music got to see the fabulous MTV special on '80s artists that aired a few weeks ago. (It's the only thing I've watched on MTV in months!!) They tracked down the Thompson Twins, Men at Work, Kajagoogoo, and several other "forgotten" bands of the '80s. Two of the Twins live in New Zealand and are still making music; Limahl from Kajagoogoo produces club records; and a couple of the members of Men at Work had left music altogether. It occured to me last night while listening to Heather Nova that women are almost always the violin or cello players. Using the full extent of my brain power for about 30 seconds, I come up with Lisa Germano, Susan Voelz, Ingrid Karklins, Allison Krauss, and Mary Ramsey (yeah, I know it's a viola) as female violin players, and um, Hahn Rowe (sp?) (ex of Hugo Largo) and Shanker are the only men I can come up with. ON Cello we've got Jane Scarpantoni, Anne Bourne, Jane Sieber (just found her in Ferron's band), Heather Nova's cello player, and maybe more. I can't think of any male cello players. Any thoughts on this? Why is the cello such a good woman's instrument? Yesterday the band Anam was playing in the Edinburgh Folk Club. I went there because I've read that the singer has a nice voice and I was sure I've seen their name somewhere in a positive review (I was wrong). The concert was good, they played mostly traditional folk songs but some was of their own composition. The band was composed of a guy playing bouzouki (I love the sound of this instrument!), a girl playing accordion and whistle, a singer/guitarist and the female lead singer. They played more than 2 hours and most of it was really great, I especially liked the girl's voice which sounded like a blend between Karen Matheson(Capercaillie singer) and Joan Baez. After the show I chat a bit with the the guitarist and the singer and got more infos on the band. The guitarist (Brian O hEadhra, from Dublin) formed it 2 years ago with the bouzouki player (Myles Farell), recorded an album and went on tour. During this tour he met the singer (Aimee Leonard) who was working in the folk music scene in London and they decided to play together. They recorded an album (called "Saoirse") and are now touring in the UK. If you like folk music "a la" Capercaillie or Loreena McKennit, you should like them. I don't know if the CD can be easily found or not. I checked CDNow and CDConnection and they don't have it. - -- Yves. +------------------------------------------------------------+ | Yves Denneulin | Laboratoire | Kate Bush | | | Informatique | Happy Rhodes | | denneuli@lifl.fr | Fondamentale de | Lisa Gerrard | | | Lille | | +------------------------------------------------------------+ Now working in Edinburgh for 3 months (Other E-Mail adress : ydd@dcs.ed.ac.uk, denneuli@epcc.ed.ac.uk) ------------------------------ From: "S.
