You're probably thinking of the Motels' "Only the Lonely." The Motels were discussed here about a year ago, if I recall correctly. Their lead singer, Martha Davis, also made a solo album or two after the Motels broke up. David Dixon wrote: > If memory serves, this is "Only The Lonely" by Quarterflash. Their other well known track was "Find Another Fool." I had this sudden urge to listen to Nerve Net last night, and was struck that something odd was going on in the lyric part of _The Roil, The Choke_. It has a very tight internal rhyme structure, but just how tight I hadn't realized until trans- scribed it. In alternating line, it's like this: odd->even even->odd 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 | X | X X 1 3 2 4 2 1 4 3 Sadly, it breaks down in the last two lines. I went along to a media-type function thingy last nigth for Sarah McLachlan at a bizzarre but very intruiging warehouse in North Melbourne. I'd interviewed Sarah on Monday morning, and she was wonderful to talk to - open and friendly, and talkative enough to make the alloted half hour fly by with me only getting about half way through all the questions I wanted to ask. Anyway, for the purposes of this function (for media and retail people), Sarah played six songs, all from "Fumbling" with the exception of "Path Of Thorns" and a new song (which she said was the only new song she's written in two years). She was assisted by Ash Sood on cocktail drum and vocals, and a guitarist whose name I didn't catch, unfortunately. Now, some of you are probably well aware of this already, but Sarah completely surprised and delighted me with how unpretentious, warm and friendly she was - and a touch self-depreciating too, as she burst into laughter when she played a couple of wrong notes on her guitar. She seemed genuinely humble at the applause she received, and kept apologising for writing depressing songs, saying she wasn't always that depressed, but she just seemed to write all her songs when she was. :) After her set I was sitting down contemplating whether or not to grab another glass of beer when someone sat down beside me and said "Hi!". I said hi back before relaising it was Sarah, who'd spotted me in the audience and decided to come over and chat, much to the concern of the BMG people who were trying to prise her away so she could have photos taken with guests. I ended up being introduced to Sarah again by one of the record company people, who didn't realise I'd met her two days before; Sarah pretended not to be able to figure out where she knew me from, and I pretended not to be able to figure out who she was ("ummm.. you're that.... that Canadian singer.... hey, are you Jane Siberry??? No hang on, I know who you are, you're Tori Amos...!?" The latter had Sarah challenging me to a mock fight :-). If there's ever been a living example of a thoroughly sweet and likeable person unaffected by international fame, Sarah McLachlan is it. And as an added bonus, she makes pretty good music, too. :) I'll transcribe and post the interview if anyone would like me to; a lot of it covers well-quoted territory (by necessity for our unfamiliar-with-Sarah readers) but there's some interesting material there. - - Anthony - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au http://daemon.apana.org.au/~anthony/ Physical mail: P.O.
