I had to pick it up at the customs office which is furtunately in my home town and even more fortunately on my way to work :-) The officer told me that they kept it there because they had some trouble with nazi propaganda material from the USA, recently. The officer opened the packet, looked at the cover and I told him that it's only a music cd. "S. Lunsford & T. O'Reilly" writes: > And I'd like to add a request that someone review the Ani Difranco > concerts that have been happening in the past week -- I haven't been > able to see her live yet and I'd love to hear what it's like. I went to the Ani DiFranco show in Eugene Sunday evening. Ani couldn't do much better to describe herself than to call her music Punk Folk. She even has a song that must have been titled something like "Fuck You", since that was about the whole chorus. (Not that I'm saying that's bad.) "They should play that on the radio," said someone from the audience right after the song was over. "Radio-friendly, that's me," Ani said, giggling. I enjoyed the show, but no major musical highlights come to mind. Part of it was that it was held in the EMU Ballroom at the U of O with practically no seating, advertised as encouraging dancing. I spent most of the show with my cast propped up on the platform that held the mixing equipment, since that was the only way I could stay comfortable for that long; with everyone standing between me and the stage, I saw almost nothing of Ani herself. As with many live performances, seeing the musicians is part of the enjoyment, which I missed at this concert. And while I'm here, I'll do another concert review. Eugene has been blessed with several Ecto-recommended artists lately. I didn't go to the Catherine Wheel/Belly show on Halloween, but I did just get back from the Boiled In Lead show at a local band bar. I was only half paying attention during all the other Boiled In Lead reviews, but when I saw they were coming to Eugene I knew I had to go see them. They are definitely a must-see live show. It was well worth sitting in a smoky bar with many dingy inhabitants to see these guys. I just hope my ears stop ringing. This was one of their more electric shows; only a couple of songs were semi-acoustic ("solid-body acoustic guitar" was how one of the band members described his instrument, adding "if you can hear it, it's acoustic"). Their show in Portland on Thursday is supposed to be more acoustic -- "Broiled in Lead -- less fat!" They also had a remarkably appropriate mood-setting opening band that I've heard of in Eugene before. Rakish Paddy claims to play a lot of traditional tunes with a totally heavy-metal treatment. Bulgarian, French, and Turkish songs were mentioned, although it was hard to tell when they were played with the usual power-trio instrumentation of electric guitar, bass, and drums. However, the guitarist and drummer were particularly dextrous and apart from some slightly repetitive musical themes they were very good and very entertaining. ------------------------------ From: "steve (s.l.) fagg" Date: Wed, 8 Nov 1995 07:20:00 -0500 Subject: Re: Victoria Williams' new live album In message "Re: Victoria Williams' new live album", 'neal@zombie.ncsc.mil' writes: >Damn, I was so hoping this would have "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on >it. It's "The Weakness in Me", which is on _Track Record_ (I think it was on Joan's untitled debut). Melissa's version was pleasant, but not revelatory. The video, of course, made no sense at all. The song is a concise view of a person caught up in an affair. The video had some number of beautiful lesbians alternatively hugging and arguing. I couldn't figure out who was cheating on who with whom. The black and white footage, and the heavy symbolism of the flowers scattered on the stairs was more than a bit over the top, IMHO. It is nice to hear Joan covered, however, and to hear something from Melissa that is not so distraught. ------------------------------ From: AURALG@aol.com Date: Wed, 8 Nov 1995 11:38:49 -0500 Subject: Indie Woes Hi How are ya ? Nice to be here. Where ya from ? But seriously folks...... I thought I'd try to shed a little light on the "Why The Keep is So Hard To Find"saga. I'm just learning how this whole thing works myself. Everytime I hear that someone can't find something, especially after a release date that I killed myself trying to meet, I tend to call up our marketing company and scream bloody, frustrated, murder. "Heads will roll !!!!!" I guess finally they couldn't take it anymore and decided to let me in on just what really goes on out there. I used to manage a record store, so I should've realized how it all goes down .It's slowly coming back to me now though a bit hazy. (Believe me, I'm more frustrated than you are) When we pick a release date we alert our distributor who in turn, alerts their sales force. The way they do this is by giving them a piece of paper called a sell sheet. It has a picture of the album (assuming the artwork is done) the UPC code and a basic press release type of blurb. We're responsible to provide about 2500 of these sell sheets, which means another trip to the graphics people and the printers. We're also suposed to have this sell sheet in the hands of the sales people 1 month prior to the release date. That means it should be coming back from the printers about 6 weeks before the release date so we can send them to the marketing company, who sends it to the distributor, who somehow gets it to the salesmen. Following any of this ? Usually 6 weeks before a release date we're still mixing the album ! You can usually tell what kind of time crunch an album was done in by counting the typos in the booklet. In fact on AG Vol2, I had chosen a couple of times and titles long before I sat down to write the music. Don't ask me why we work this way, it's a very long story. Even longer than this one , if you can believe that. Anyway, the sales people, on their appointed rounds, give a copy of the sell sheet to the store manager (if they're in on the day he's there) and says,"This'll be out in about a month, how many would you like me to put you down for ?" The store manager thinks long and hard about how much money he has left to spend after buying 1,000 copies of the Melissa Etheridge/Perry Como Christmas album and says, "Gimme two !" This is on a good day when all is going according to plan. If our sell sheet got to the salesman the day after he was at a particular store, that store won't even know about it for another week. Another week after he or she has seen 9 other salespeople from other labels and distributors and has bought even more crap in hopes of having the record buying public make his or her fourth quarter a record breaking retail phenomina. Did I forget to mention that our little sell sheet is also one of about 100 that the salesman has with him ? There is also a list of new releases being provided to the stores by the distributor. Hopefully our records are on that list. But it too is pretty jammed packed, especially this time of year, and let's face it Happy Rhodes is not a household name. So even if a buyer sees it on a list, unless he or she knows of Happy or has a sales history of Happy, they're gonna be looking for material that they know will sell. They only have so much to spend. OK let's assume then that the store has actually been made aware of the new release and they order some. Now it's time to process that order. Assuming that the manufacturer has finished screwing up the film masters for the 12th time and the thing is actually pressed and packaged and shipped to the correct addresses, the distributor can check the store's credit history, buying power, outstanding invoices, and mounting pile of return requests, and process the order. The order is shipped, either directly to the store or it's headquarters, and arrives in the stock room that is now overflowing with Melissa and Perry's tour de force and a pile of Kiss Unplugged videos. Joe and Jill Lacky now have the task of opening boxes that their coats aren't thrown on and stocking the floor. Joe and Jill would rather be out in the parking lot smoking a joint and debating who has the better voice, Courtney Love or Lisa Loeb. I know I'm sounding just a bit jaded, but the mere fact that we can get any record into any store, at anytime, to me is a miracle. It's taken 4 years to get to the point where distributors and stores even consider us and recognize who we are. This blessed fact is actually due to you guys for which we are eternally grateful. So when you go to look for something that is not quite mainstream and might not have alot of bucks behind it, you might have to employ a little more patience then you'd like. I'm speaking very generally here. Some stores actually had The Keep on the day they were supposed to and everything went smoothly. It's the overall coordinated effort that's so hard to pull off considering all the variables. I know in the past we've requested that you try and find Happy through the retail process 'cause it makes us look better to show sales in the real world. But screw it ! If you can't find it call us. Get it from us ! At this point it's more important to me for you to have the record. The Keep was expressly made for supporters and not for sales figures. I'm truly sorry for the frustrations in finding this (and other) recording. We do what we can and are always investigating new and better ways to improve on our distribution woes. We're open to alot of possibilities. Thanks for taking the time to read this rambling and thanks for your support of our efforts. Love Kevin "Gonna kill me a retail clerk" Bartlett P.S. That thing on the Yes list was not of Happy's doing. She merely asked if Jeff could announce the fact that she had a new release, thinking it might be of some interest to Yes fans 'cause of the medely. For some reason Jeff decided to put it in the first person, so it sounded like Happy was making the announcement. It came out sounding really lame and she is mortified. Talk about your wankers. ------------------------------ From: Nicholas Hill Date: Wed, 8 Nov 1995 14:36:18 -0500 Subject: Joni plays Fez Joni Mitchell played a show at the 150 seat nightclub Fez in New York City on Monday night. As usual they were awesome except this time there were more than 10 people there (like it used to be at Schuba's last year where they played at least 4 shows in 4 months!!)... The cool thing was they played for a long time -- and rehashed some standards (Spiderman, Green Eggs and Ham) that I hadn't seen them do in a while. Anyways, there was a good turn out. Since I am already so familiar with their shtick (there were only 1 or 2 new things that I'd never seen/heard before) I felt like their manager or something. And the sound was pretty awful -- too loud to the point of distortion (very tinny). The opening band was pretty terrible and even louder -- they were called the Joy Poppers,, but Moxy called them "Chicago Poppin'" or something which I thought was hilarious. All in all a terrific show (I won't reveal any more surprises) that everyone should go see. Wood (their 2nd CD) is still not on any label in the U.S. (it's on Warner in Canada and UK), but Bargainville is pretty widely available now everywhere. Before the show started they played some serious 80s music and we were trying to identify them. One were stumped on (how embarrassing, I think :-) was a female lead-vocal band singing a chorus with "only the lonely" in it. Anyone know the name of the band?! The other thing I thought was cool is that the audience yelled "moxy moxy moxy moxy..." then "fruvous fruvous...." to bring them back twice for encores. Hadn't heard that before... Next time I hope they play a better venue. - -mjm ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V2 #274 ************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to ecto-owner@nsmx.rutgers.edu
