I don't think I ever told ecto that a few weeks ago Jim and I went through Vancouver on our way to Victoria (where my parents live) and paused long enough to visit with ectophiles Art Liestman and to go with him to a Veda Hille concert. It was kind of strange because it was in a bar that was in the process of renovating (we got to see them mount the speakers upside down beside the stage and put up the shelves by the bar and put the bottles on them), and the workers drinking behind us were incredibly loud, but Veda was wonderful. She was solo (she usually has a band) but that didn't slow her down any. The old songs had as much life as they must on the album and the new songs promise that her next album is going to be ever better than _path of a body_. If that's possible. We talked to her briefly. She does still have copies of her first tape and _path of a body_ for sale. I can't praise her music enough. For me she's definitely one of the goddesses. It was also funny to run into her on Friday night as I stood by the door at the Ani DiFranco concert waiting to give tickets to friends of mine who were late. I was surprised and delighted to run into her and was too stoopid to do much more than say "Veda? Hi! How are you! When will you play Seattle?" I wish she had opened for Ani--I think Ani's audience would really like Veda's music, even if is it more eclectic than Ani's. The Ani concert was great by the way--it was the first time I'd managed to be in town and available to see her when she came through Seattle. - --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Tue, 7 Nov 1995 11:57:48 -0500 (EST) Subject: Show tonight (for Toronto readers) Hi, Sorry for the national distribution, but I wanted to alert the Toronto area people to the fact the Wyrd Sisters play The Ultrasound tonight. If you're looking for earth-shattering music, don't look for it in this band. But if you want to bop around and have some fun, then check them out! They have made it out to the east coast (opening for Drivin' and Cryin'--who the hell came up with that pairing?). I saw them at Toad's in New Haven, CT, with some of my friends. We'd all heard the album and liked it, so we thought we'd check them out. Like Mark said, the live show has way more energy than the recordings. We all really really had a great time watching them and bopping around. Is their singer really wacky or what? Anyway, they're loads of fun for anyone who's interested. Did anyone see Happy's very own plug for The Keep on the Yes list? I have to say, I was completely unimpressed by it, which means that the folks over there who've never heard of Happy aren't going to rush out to buy her album just because she recorded a Yes medley. It basically consisted of a few sentences saying "Hi, I'm Happy Rhodes. There's a Yes medley on my new album, so you might want to check it out." Of course that's really oversimplifying it, but that's how it came across to me. I love Happy's music dearly, but I thought her note to Notes From The Edge was a little strange. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, I still don't have the Keep, but supposedly it's coming to my friendly neighborhood record store this week. It better! I know her style's changed a bit over the >years... so I'm really curious what she's up to now. The song, I believe, was originally written by Nina Simone. The version I'm most familiar with is Holly Cole's which doesn't sound like Nina Simone at all.] Patti Smith sings it in a style very similar to Nina's, with simple piano accompaniment--and she hits some incredible high notes. Much higher than I thought she was capable of. The video is just black and white, showing Patti playing with her hair and singing. It's a very pretty piece with some great piano. It was definitely a treat to see her again, and see her coming back with such grace. By the way, the album "Ain't Nothing But a She Thing" should be available today--its a compilation album. Other artists that appear on it are Luscious Jackson, Queen Latifah, Salt n' Pepa, Annie Lennox, and Melissa Etheridge (doing a nice cover of a Joan Armatrading song whose name I can't remember). There are probably others but my memory fades. I'm sure a video will be released as well--though most of the show I found quite uninteresting and at times quite annoying. It features various different women that have done outstanding things, and interviews with some not so spectacular women on what its like being a woman. It also features some annoying cartoon-like segments. I didn't watch it too closely--I was in the kitchen most of the time, so it might be more meaningful if watched closely. BUt I think I'll definitely pick up the album--if only for a couple of the songs. >Thanks, >Richard. Your welcome. At the Festival party after the last night, Veda was off in a room with a number of people doing swinging Sound of Music songs, her on piano and vocals and other instruments like trombone and fiddle and percussion (overturned garbage cans).
