It seems much of her entourage was denied entry into Canada at the border crossing, so it unexpectedly got turned into Heather Nova "unplugged"! Only 2 band members made it to Toronto with her. The cello player, who played on all songs, and a guy who played bass on some songs, acoustic guitar on others, and was not on stage for about 1/3 of the songs. Heather played acoustic guitar throughout. The set was short, as I expect they probably hadn't really prepared for such an occasion. Heather was absolutely outstanding, and in fact I liked the "unplugged" versions of some of the songs better than my CD versions. She played most of my favorite songs from Oyster, one from her live CD which I don't own, and a great cover of Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane". There was a good turnout at the club (350 maybe), and the crowd was very enthusiastic. Thanks to everyone who recommended her. She really is great live. While on the subject, here's some Heather Nova info sent to my mailbox today from Columbia Records' Internet mailing list. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Heather Nova WORK artist, Heather Nova, is on a national US tour in support of her critically acclaimed debut album Oyster which contains the Top 15 Alternative track "Walk This World." The Bermuda-born, London-based recording artist was a student at David Byrne's alma mater, the Rhode Island School Of Design (RISDI) where she studied art and film before discovering a latent songwriting talent that led her to London where she was discovered by ex-Gang Of Four member Youth. After releasing her demos (called Glowstars) on his Butterfly label, she was signed to Big Cat and eventually discovered by WORK/Columbia stateside. Recently, she was asked to open dates with Neil Young (one of her heros) and Pearl Jam in Europe including Berlin where she consistently sells out 2,500-seat theaters on her own. Heather will headline at The Academy in New York City on November 6th. ------------------------------ From: Mike Matthews Date: Thu, 2 Nov 1995 00:15:07 -0500 Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Katie Dougiamas (no Email address) ******************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Katie Dougiamas Sat November 02 1974 Scorpio Anthony Horan Fri November 04 1966 Positive Michael Sullivan Mon November 05 1962 Scorpio Jens Brage Sun November 08 1964 Scorpio Rising Lynn Garrett Sat November 08 1958 Scorpio Sam Murgie Fri November 08 1957 Scorpio Ken Latta Sun November 11 1951 Scorpio Michael Doyle Wed November 12 1969 Scorpio Neil K. It was shown on a Bette Midler special called _Mondo Beyondo_ which aired on HBO (I think). I don't know if Mondo Beyondo is on video, but I can say for sure that it was released on laserdisc, because we own it. For us, it was worth buying not only for the LLLHS/WIC video, but also for an amazing percussion piece by a group then known as the Yes No People. If memory serves: the snippet used in "Pump Up the Volume" and, before that, in Eric D. & Rakim's "Paid in Full", was from "Im Nin'alu", not "Galbi". The success of the sample, along with some legal wrangling over sample rights, lead to the wide release of "Yemenite Songs", followed by the 12" of "Galbi". > This disc also has a number of English language songs, which are only > passably interesting. Well, the multi-part single seems more often than not to be used as a chart tool - i.e. a band releases a single, and all the fans buy it, complete with sticker saying "part 2 available next week". So the next week, as well as non-fanatics who like the song still buying the first single, you have all the die-hard fans rushing to the store to get the second part. It keeps a single in the upper reaches of the chart longer. > And there's >a special circle of hell reserved for the person who dreamed up the idea >of "limited edition" singles. Agreed - but there's a reason once again. A single that might sell slowly but steadily for weeks and never get above 40 in the charts can suddenly rocket in at number one and then vanish the next week. But it's been number one, which is a great promo tool for the album to follow. Then there are companies that combine the two tactics, as Warner did in England with the Tori Amos "Cornflake Girl" singles. >Simultaneously anticipating and dreading the release of Tori's new album >(because collecting all of those "limited editions" is such a chore -- but >the music is soooo good!), Indeed... in fact, I'm on the lookout for a UK person here I can recruit for this round of single releases...! - - Anthony - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au http://daemon.apana.org.au/~anthony/ Physical mail: P.O.
