Well, the descriptions of Susan Voelz have me intrigued... I see two available via cdconnection: 13 Ribs, and Summer Crashing. Any suggestions on where to start (although I'm tempted to just get them both @ 11.99 each - but usually I limit my "sound-unheard" purchases to one of each artist).... It wasn't the Duets special that is supposed to be airing later this month, but it did feature interview clips with Jewel, Joan Osborne, Paula Cole, and Sophie B. Hawkins (who had the worst eye makeup I've ever seen!) It was a pretty entertaining show. And if you're bored while handing out candy this evening, they'll be airing the uncut, unedited Rocky Horror Picture Show to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Happy Halloween! Yeah, but the original does the two voices playing off each other in a much more interesting way (to me at least). > I (as well as much of the rest of his early fans) got turned on to > his music by Judy Collins's versions, which seem quite smooth and > confident. Ah--that explains a lot of it. I have probably only heard the Collins versions once or twice at most. Cohen himself blasted onto the scene in Canada in 1968--I was 10--and we've been listening to him do his own work ever since. I still remember the house we were renting when his first album _Songs of Leonard Cohen_ came out and my sister bought the album and obsessed over it--whenever I begin to listen to it I get this overpowering sense of the place and the light and the first real fruit tree in my life. And even then the lyrics seemed incredible. Not that I think he's a great poet (I don't, I think he's a great lyricist, which is different) but his work is some of the first poetry I ever heard and read seriously. Probably the first lyrics in my life that were seriously worth listening to. And I love his wry wit about religion--one of my favourite lines is "I'd crucify anyone who tried to save me." Heh. It's true. - --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ------------------------------ From: dbucak@netaxs.com (Deniz Bucak) Date: Tue, 31 Oct 1995 12:49:16 -0500 Subject: Re: Wasn't that Mr. Badalamenti? > On Oct. 31, Neal Copperman wrote: >I just saw the film Nadja, and in between it's odd soundtrack of My >Bloody Valentine and Portishead songs (none of which really seemed to >work with the movie), there was instrumental music and sounds that >sounded like dead ringers for Angelo Badalamenti's work David Lynch had >his name across the top as Producer. Prior to that, it's been languishing on the bookshelf for the last year, where I put it after it didn't make much of an impression then. And Post wasn't too high on my list of things to pick up after I saw Bjork in DC. I was almost completely bored the whole show, until "It's Oh So Quiet" came on. That was so much fun that I was prepared to buy Post for it alone, but given my current feelings towards Bjork's music, I think the single is much more appropriate. Hey, if it's a great single, than perhaps it'll make me want to buy the album. (Are the other songs any good?) Thanks to everyone that told me about the Swedish/Norwegian fiddle. I edited the very sparse entry on Paula Abdul for the ecto guide. It mostly consists of a whole slew of web-sites devoted to Paula that I looked up. But outside of that, there is one comment (attributed to you!) that pretty much says just what you said above. In fact, since the file is still on my computer, this is what you had to say then: Most of Paula Abdul's oeuvre would make many an Ectophile lose their lunch... but her song "Blowing Kisses in the Wind" is heartbreakingly beautiful, as is its video.
