Some I feel are essential to my life (ecto, of course), some I'm on simply because I don't want to miss any info (really deep thoughts). We've done this in an uncoordinated way for a while, but I'd really like to have a reliable transfer of info from various mailing lists to ecto. I'm not saying to repost discussion, but tour dates, new releases, other news items. This would mean someone on ecto and on the other list would take responsibility for doing this (meaning they are the ones to repost info and will find someone to do this for them if they have to unsub, etc.) Depending on the list, they might want to tell people they'll be passing on that kind of info and that kind only, something like that so that the usual misunderstandings don't happen when someone notices someone regularly reposting info. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone if interested in this idea. Anyone willing to coordinate it a little (not me if at all possible--I have my hands full with too many mailing list and the Ectophiles Guide but I'd be willing to act as rep for a couple of the mailing lists I'm on). "chameleon" is pretty poppy and doesn't leave much of an impression to me. the second track, "fundevogel" is a magnificent tale with a hauntingly familiar melody and nice synth pads. the last two tracks, "senses out" and "floodletting," are similar to the second, but don't hit me as hard. one thumb up from me. woj ------------------------------ From: beach house tiki god Date: Tue, 24 Oct 1995 19:29:57 -0400 Subject: Re: Ecto & Other Mailing Lists Neile Graham sez: >We've done this in an uncoordinated way for a while, but I'd really >like to have a reliable transfer of info from various mailing lists >to ecto. (can you guess that i'm also dealing with a huge e-mail crunch?) i'm not sure that the best way to go about it is designating liasions between lists, but that's a workable approach. an idea i like better would be a news-only mailing list. yeah, i know: another mailing list. however, if it is widely advertised amongst the female artists mailing lists, it could succeed. one thing is, it'd need a home and i can't supply one. there's also the problem that people might not use it even if they know about it. hmmm. woj ------------------------------ From: kerry white Date: Tue, 24 Oct 1995 19:32:00 -0500 (CDT) Subject: Keep-ing up w/. .. I think it's an excellent idea. I've finally decided to limit myself to only ecto and the dar-list and that's plenty for my taste. I'd still like to be informed about other lists however and think that coordinating this in some way is a great idea. I'd be willing to try to take on this task. I was thinking that everyone who wants to participate could send me a list of the ecto-related lists they're on over the next couple of weeks. At the end of that time I would cross-reference these and assign certain lists to certain people. These people would then be 'officially' responsible for informing the rest of us about that particular list. If you don't hear back from me, someone else has been assigned your list and you don't need to repost anything from it. Those who decide to unsubscribe at a future time could then inform me and I would check the original lists to re-assign that one to someone else. Does this make sense? Good idea? Stupid idea? Any suggestions on how to do this differently? If you like the idea, start sending your 'list lists' to me at the address below... A couple of weeks ago Meth posted to the list asking about Susan McKeown and The Chanting House, saying she'd heard some songs on the radio and liked what she'd heard and was wondering about the album. At the time I responded, saying I didn't think much of it, but liked a couple of songs. Well, guess what album I've been obsessing over for the last couple of days. Yup. _Bones_ by Susan McKeown etc. I guess what put me off at first was the singer-songwriter stuff. And the fact that I thought I wanted more traditional stuff. And maybe the fact that this is subtly crafted stuff, that takes a little listening to to hear properly (at least for me). What I thought was standard contemporary folk isn't at all--there are all kinds of trad echoes and contemporary echoes and edgy echoes, and damn I like this disc. The "Westron Wynde/Westlin Winds" song is still my favourite, though. Anyway, I have the C'est La Morte version of it. I gather Woody from C'est la Mort is still around and will sell discs if he has them, so if someone has his current address in Oregon maybe the could post it. It's a strange and wonderful album--if you like what's on the Femme Music Collection, you'll like the album. The only comparison musically I can think of is equally obscure (I think)--Hugo Largo. La La La Human Steps have a video?! Dave Dixon ------------------------------ From: "jeffrey hanson" Date: Wed, 25 Oct 95 11:15:02 cdt Subject: October Project Well, October Project won me over last night. I've had the first album when it first came out, and bought the second one right after it came out, but still wasn't wildly enthused about them. I loved the music but there was something about Mary Fahl's voice that I just found annoying--it always sounded a little forced. But last night's concert at The Metropolitan in Minneapolis (I think it's my new favorite concert venue--a gorgeous place!) won me over. Mary's voice is really quite unique, and I think now I'll just be able to take it for what it is, instead of trying to compare her to others. The highlight of the evening was Be My Hero--which built to a pretty electrifying energetic high-point. She was also tickled because they had recently found out that Anne Rice had said she liked the film version of Interview With the Vampire, but that she didn't like the closing Guns n' Roses theme song and that they should have used October Project's Take Me As I Am, (which is apparently based on the novel--a fact I didn't realize). Opening for October Project was Jane Kelly Williams, a Georgian singer/songwriter who plays guitar and keyboards, and had accompaniment of an upright bass and Urbano Sanchez of October Project on percussion. She seems like a very sweet, shy, Southern girl who was extremely polite--the crowd couldn't help but be nice to her, but I wasn't overly impressed with her performance. They were giving away cassette singles of both her and October Project, and I found her recorded performances to be a little better. The last song she did, Carry Him, I found to be pretty powerful, but she just didn't have much energy--still a little too shy I guess. Anyone heard her album? Also got to meet Cathy and Kevin from the list--though I didn't get much of a chance to speak with Kevin. Oh well, maybe next time. It really was uncanny how we all ended up recognizing each other at about the same time. Always great to meet more ectophiles. Don't forget Twin City ectophiles--Jewel will be performing Thursday and Friday at First Avenue, opening for Catherine Wheel and Belly. I'll definitely be at Friday's performance, and may be at the Thursday show as well, if they let me cross-over from the 7th St. Entry prior to Heather Nova. Let me know if any of you plan to go. The Friday night show is an early-all ages show--Jewel is supposed to go on at 6:00. In fact, I pretty much am already relying on Ecto for this type of information, since I unsubscribed from Love-hounds and Folk_Music (although I know I'm missing stuff by not being on F_M but at least the concert listings are (supposively) on musiCal now). Love_hounds is pretty much a barren field (save the periodic tape tree). I've never read RDT, but am always interested in hearing what the latest is with Tori. I have never even attempted to subscribe to the myriad other lists for individual artists that I like, and ecto has pretty much always satisfied my need to know, thanks to people who are by default already doing what Neile suggested. Neile's idea is good in theory. But relying on one rep to provide LH info, for example, might end up that others who wanted to post on something they read in LH might refrain. Thus the danger is that the flow of info, however relevant or irrelevant, might be impeded somewhat. I think the way we have it now -- where everyone posts news on their favorite artists (e.g. I would post any Aimee Mann stuff I heard that I thought was important, because I think she's awesome and everyone needs to know this :-), and I know that the Milla guy, Mike ?? would do the same with her, etc. etc. etc.) is working pretty well. All I would do would be to open the policy up by stating explicitly in the ecto manifesto that "people are encouraged to provide whatever informational data (i.e. tour dates, concert reviews, CD recommendations, etc. etc., but esp. things that others of us probably don't know, i.e. tour dates) they feel is relevant or that matters to them, about whatever ectolytic (in the most general sense -- i.e. of interest to other ectophiles) artists and music they deem germane." - -mjm ------------------------------ From: ydd@dcs.ed.ac.uk Date: Wed, 25 Oct 1995 20:17:37 GMT Subject: Mary Black in Edinburgh/New Capercaillie/Maire Brennan If some ectophiles are going to Mary Black concert in Edinburgh next sunday and want to meet a fellow french ectophile currently on a work trip there, please e-mail me (that was a long sentence! :-) ).
