The album's a year or two old but I just saw an ad for a new one by them so I thought I'd give them a plug. Rosewater Elizabeth sounds a little like what might happen if the singer from Rose Chronicles teamed up with the guitarist from Love Spirals Downward (why do I always describe bands as combinations of other bands? Maybe because language is just inadequate when describing music, so I have to use other music.) Their sound is very ethereal but with touches of traditional Irish music (several songs include bagpipes) and even Peter Gabriel's _Passion_. There's a lot of variation in the songs so they don't all sound alike. My only complaint about the album is that it's way too short (33 min.) Does anyone out there know anything about these guys (like tour dates?) I'm kinda new to the list so I guess I'll lay out my tastes to provide a buyers reference point. I like groups like The Moon Seven Times, Happy Rhodes (gee, really?), Cocteau Twins, My Scarlet Life and those mentioned above. - - Deniz dbucak@netaxs.com "Cogito ergo es - I think therefore you is" Robin Williams in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen ------------------------------ From: Date: 23 Oct 95 13:28:04 EDT Subject: Ferron, October Project Are there any Ferron fans out there? It's a pretty good album and they seem to be putting on a big promotional push for it, which seems odd since she's done other albums since it. Yes, she is Canadian. She used to live on an island between Vancouver and Victoria, but I don't know if she still does. She started off with _Shadows On a Dime_ (um, late 70's?), followed by _Testimony_ (mid 80's) and _Phantom Center_, which came out in '90. In '92, she released two ablums, one instrumental and one live (_Not a Still Life_). There's another recent album (which I want to say is called _Driver_, but that might be the name of the instrumental album). And I just noticed m'self that _Phantom Center_ had been re-released. Very odd seeing new cover art on it. I had meant to mention its new availability on ecto, but forgot. _Phantom Center_ has been particularly well-noted on the 'net in a number of newsgroups/mailing lists due to the appearance of an obscure (at least in 1990!) backup singer named...Tori Amos. That is, after a passibly interesting but ultimately unfulfilling discussion on Shakespeare plays by Stacey Keach (current Macbeth in DC) and Harry Hamlin (future Henry V next month), I decided to cap off my evening by seeing Ferron at the Birchmere. Little did I know there was much discussion on the subject going on while I was gone. Anyway, I was completely unfamiliar with Ferron, and only when I was driving home did I realize what was bugging me in my head. The whole evening I had confused her with Phranc, another woman I don't know. No wonder she seemed much older than I expected and didn't look anything like the pictures I'd seen! Anyway, the show was quite nice, though not what I expected. I guess I was imagining a smoother folk sound, a la Joan Baez or Dar Williams or someone, and not someone in the Leonard Cohen vein. Not a problem, it just took a bit longer for me to get into what she was doing. She's got a pretty gruff voice, and didn't seem to do much actual singing, sticking more to the Leonard Cohen or Dylan style of delivery. What really made the evening for me was that she had a top notch band with her. I think the drummer dated back to her first album (late 60's!) and some of the others also went back at least 15 or 20 years. They meshed perfectly, complimented each other when appropriate, and snuck out for some fun soloing and ad libbing that caught the others off guard without throwing the music out of whack. The highlight for me was definitely the cello player - Jami Sieber. Amongst all the Ferron discs on sale, I snapped up "lush mechanique", Jami's solo album. I haven't had a chance to listen to it, so I've no idea what it sounds like. It doesn't appear to be on any label at all. Anyone know of her or Rumors of the Big Wave, a northwest urban folk/rock band that she's apparently a part of. (I'll give some comments on the disc once I give it a listen.) Also, Ferron mentioned that a number of her discs had been recently cleaned up and re-released. One had a new cover, was re-engineered, and one song was re-recorded with the Indigo Girls. She also mentioned she was heading up to Boston and other Massachusets sites next. Sorry I didn't get more specific info, but I didn't realize the interest out there. (Oh yeah, and her show was smoke free! No smoking allowed in the club.) Well, talking to some "individual" in the music department, he said that since it's a "smaller label", the distributor will get it on its release date. From there it will go to the chains. He guesstimated that *if it came in*, it would be two weeks from when I inquired (18 Oct 95). The "major" local chain said that...well, they actually said nothing. The person I talked to said that he didn't know, because the person who orders all the "imports" was on vacation for a week (last week). We don't have Tower, but we just got a Blockbuster in. However, since Best Buy is the *second* less-expensive place in the area (the first being a *furniture store outlet*) I tend to go there. I'll have to check, though, at the furniture store outlet. Maybe they'll special order it.
