I actually was expecting to be a little disappointed--I didnt see how she could live up to all the great things I'd heard about her, but she did. It's just a shame that her recordings don't begin to capture the passion and enthusiasm of her live performances. And her personality is a delight--playfully neurotic is a phrase that sprang to mind as I watched her. But her humor was great and she certainly knows how to work a crowd. The crowd was very enthusiastic--second only to the crowd at Alison Moyet. She really rocked out--it's amazing she doesn't break more guitar strings than she does. (She didn't break any this show). Her and drummy Andy have a great rapport between them, and it looks like they're really enjoying themselves. A great show--the only complaint I had was that stylistically her songs don't vary much--she basically has the folk/punk and the spoken word songs. She's great at what she does, but it would be nice to see a little more variety. But maybe I'm just used to Jewel's live performances. I went to two of their shows in June and I'll see them again in November in New Haven. They're great! The band is now Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew, Pat Mastellotto (another drummer), and Trey Gunn (plays the stick or Warr or whatever it is--very cool). If you haven't heard Thrak yet, go do it! Most of what they're playing on the tour is from Thrak with a few songs from the Discipline era thrown in and only one or two really old things. The opening act is the California Guitar Trio who are also excellent! Three amazing guys on acoustic guitar, playing a range of things including Toccata and Fugue in Dm - --amazing stuff! So get there on time because they're very punctual (what a surprise) and you don't want to miss CGT, trust me. Anyway, that's my plug for a band that probably doesn't need a plug. Actually, I got a free ticket to see him because I was at Open Mike at a club called the Freight & Salvage, and the host was giving away tickets to see him the next day in order to thicken the audience a bit. Vance even showed up at the Open Mike to give a little taste of his act. His act was pleasant enough, but certainly not awe-inspiring. Had good patter though. Speaking of underwhelming concerts, I saw Heather Nova here in SF on Sunday. Ho hum. First of all, her band seemed more like employees than a band; she barely interacted with them, didn't introduce them to the audience, and they looked fairly bored (especially the cello player). She rarely talked to the audience, and did too much quiet..quiet..quiet... BANG!!!!! orchestration in her songs. I was unimpressed. In contrast, Ben Folds Five was a blast! They looked like they were having a good time, at least. Besides, I have a soft spot for "wise-guy rock". Their debut's on my list of "CDs to get, maybe" Michael Hedges is out on tour again. Definitely a don't-miss (although feel free to take a bathroom break during his rendition of "Jabberwocky"; he makes an effort to be silly, and it just doesn't work). But be sure to come back in time to see more of his jaw-dropping guitartistry. Gives me a whole new appreciation for 'Plumb', which I quite liked before, but like even more now, having heard her live.... Unfortunately we missed the opening act, Kevin Gilbert, who was on his second-to-last song as we walked in at 9 (!)... I thought he was supposed to *start* then, but apparently not. He was kind of like a male Ani DiFranco - just him and his guitar, and a drummer who was hand drumming, shaking some sort of egg-like percussion toy and playing bass drum and cymbal with his feet, all at the same time... very cool! Don't know if he was from here or touring with them or what... May try to check out his album... I think Jonatha said it was called 'Thud'?? So Jonatha was great! Excellent voice, great stories/comments in between songs... though she did think we were a tough crowd (which I agree we kind of were... small, but attentive though, which I really like)... she said "Canadians are so quiet" :). One of her intros, which sticks in my mind, was about her parents getting re-married after having been married for 37 years, followed by a 4 year divorce. So they called her a week before the wedding to invite her, and there she was 'holding hands on the coast of Maine' (I'll be paraphrasing here...I wish I could remember exactly how she said all this because it was quite funny...). Everyone expected her to be happy, saying this should be a 'dream come true' for her. She said something like 'actually I hadn't really dreamed about it... recently'...'but I decided to at least get a song out of it, so I wrote this... it's from my mother's perspective, if she was completely honest, and it's called 'No Better (Than Before)'' [:)]... Hmmm... maybe you had to be there, but it was a very cool intro and puts a neat new perspective on the song for me. She was generally very 'friendly' and talkative, which I love! I agree with sorry-I-don't-remember-who, who just posted the Heather Nova in SF review, noting that she had been rather 'distant'. I definately got that impression from her as well, though that concert is still a bit of a blur like I said before :). Anyway... Jonatha was excellent... go see her if you get a chance!!! I saw Kevin here in Mpls last week and I was entirely unimpressed with him. His music was ordinary, and when he tried to be...controversial, he only sounded rather silly. He is not the lyricist Ani is, with her amazing ability to make a point when one needs to be made. In fact, someone needs to tell him that using the word 'lesbian' in the same sentence with 'Tonya Harding naked' just doesn't make a song daring. :-) Anyway, the only thing I found that was semi-interesting about Kevin is that his percussionist looks alot like a cross between Sal Mineo and Ecto's very own Jeff Burka. Had lots of Jeffy's mannerisms too. Oh well, *I* thought it was interesting... Is this the point where I need to emphasize that this is only my opinion, and others are certainly welcome to tell me to go to hell? :-) I agree wholeheartedly with Ariane's comments about The Story though! I had just found out that day that I'm losing my job, so when Jonatha started to sing, that voice felt like a salve on my wounds. The depression melted away, at least for the evening. I liked Ingrid too! I was curious about how her voice would fit the Jennifer parts, but it was seamless. Someone in the crowd hollered "Where's Jennifer?" and since I was sitting in the front row directly in front of Ingrid, I could see her bristle a bit. I'm sure she's sick of hearing that question. I also wonder what the real story is about Jennifer's departure? Jonatha made a couple of comments in passing about her difficult time last fall, very off-handed comments that seemed more like musings than actual concert patter. I missed the Lisa Gerrard concert on Monday, even had a two-for-one ticket deal there, but I had a prior commitment. I'm not telling what it was, you'll all jeer at me. :-) October Project on the 24th though! I finally bought the new CD so need to have a listen before the concert.
