Lisa was absolutely exquisite. I found the "opening act" to be a little tiresome--the guy had a great speaking voice but the best part of his little act was Lisa's ghost noises--she could haunt my house anytime. I'm actually listening to Marianne Faithfull's spoken word pieces on A Secret Life right now and would much prefer listening to her than to the guy from Lisa's band do his little recitation. But when Lisa came out to perform, it was utterly captivating. I had great seats--about 10 feet from her, front row--a little to the left. This caused a little trouble seeing the people on the right side of the stage, but I didn't mind--I found myself having trouble taking my eyes of Lisa's mouth anyway. It's utterly incredible the noises she can make. She definitely speaks her own language. I found her show to be utterly transcendent. And although the orchestral numbers from the new album didn't sound quite as rich with just the synthesizers, I actually preferred the beginning of the show to the later half. While the band didn't have the tuning problems Neal mentioned, they certainly didn't have the choreography of what to do between songs worked out. Lisa managed to bonk the percussionist pretty good on the head with her instrument once, forgot her little mallets and had to walk back offstage to get them at one point, and got more than a little peeved at the guy playing the (shoot--what was that)--the most guitar-like instrument on stage when he tried to grab the mike and sing along with her and she said "Not yet!". She actually seemed a little peeved at this guy throughout the show. She definitely seems to be a perfectionist. But despite those small flaws, Lisa was incredible. Sanvean is still, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. During the show I even began to think that Lisa might just oust Kate as God from my personal pantheon, but realized they are really incomparable. Lisa seems much more like an instrument--sort of a telephone or other device, that brings these divine sounds from a whole other dimension. Her self-expression is more self-less expression--totally becoming a channel to this divine noise. So I won't try to compare her with other female singers like Kate or Jane or Happy--but I will say that I don't think I've ever seen another singer with such incredible vocal control. It still amazes me that Lisa is able to create these songs in no language other than her own. Anyway, it was a great show--truly magical, captivating, transcendant, incomparable. The closest show I can compare it to is Loreena McKennitt's--but that's more a comparison of bands and musical styles than of vocalists. It will be an impeccable show if they can just work out the details as to who is supposed to be where, when and with what instrument. She could learn something from Sarah MacLachlan about smooth transitions between songs and instruments. So, yes another raving review. I actually wrote a rather disparaging review about the Throwing Muses show at First Avenue the other night. I sent it to friends but didn't post to the list. I thought it might be a little too incendiary--needless to say I wasn't overly impressed but then I've never been that big of a fan. Tonight is Ani DiFranco--should be an interesting contrast to Lisa! Then we went to the Tower Records just a block away (how convenient) to experience an encounter with EWS. I came away with four CDs myself, tying a previous record during the Vancouver trip last year. Old stuff: _Strange Angels_, Laurie Anderson; _How Can You Be in Two Places at Once If You're Not Anywhere at All_, the Firesign Theatre (hooray! Now I have _their_ 1st4). New stuff: The only CD player I have handy is the Sun Sparcstation I'm installing, with a pair of headphones plugged in to the CD drive. The sound isn't the best, with noise from the electronics lending a constant hum and odd sounds whenever the display updates, but it has let me listen to the two new albums I got. And the volume slider on the X-based control panel goes to 11. _All You Can Eat_, k.d. lang: I've always liked k.d., even when she was doing country. This is actually the first album of hers that I've been able to hold on to and listen through; I once had a copy of _Absolute Torch & Twang_ that I loaned out before listening to it myself and never got back. So far, I like it. It's a little mellow, but k.d.'s voice is as gorgeous as ever. _Ben Folds Five_, Ben Folds Five: I never listen to this kind of stuff. If I hadn't seen them live at the Heather Nova show I never would have heard of them at all. I can't stop listening to the album, which lives up to the promise I saw in their live show, and I haven't quite figured out why I like it so much. One reason is that under the cheerful exterior is wry humor, unexpectedly mature observation and thoughtfulness, and even gentle self-mockery. Though the themes tend to be youthful, dangerously close to love-song material a couple of times, the songs avoid being fluff pieces or wallows in self-pity. My only gripe (which may be exacerbated by the poor audio of the CD-ROM drive turned CD player that I'm using) is that the bassist is fond of distortion, which sounds out of place many times. Nevertheless, this album is holding up well under repeated listening and I expect it will be one of my favorites of the year. With a debut like this, I can't wait to hear their second release. Now for a delayed reviews: _The Mirror Pool_, Lisa Gerrard: I like all kinds of Dead Can Dance songs, whether Brendan Perry or Lisa Gerrard seened to be the dominant force in a song. However, my favorites are heavily weighted towards the songs with Lisa's vocals -- "Mesmerized", "The Host of Seraphim", "Summononing of the Muse". Although Lisa's solo work doesn't always have the power of those songs, it's still great. My surprise favorite is the slow, almost too-repetitive instrumental "Nilleshna" near the end of the album, which nevertheless musically does it for me. Is it sometimes creepy? Yeah, but that's what I like. I just wanted to tell that she released a solo album (that is, at least in Europe) some 6 or 7 years ago; it's called "The Corporate World", from 1989 I think. I went to see her in concert at that time but that was too 'heavy' and too loud for my taste, and while I liked the CD way back when, it doesn't do much for me nowadays. Her voice is strong indeed, but the production is rather smooth (the CD is produced by Nathan East). Somehow the album reminds me a bit of Paula Cole's "Harbinger", also for the lyrical contents (with songtitles like "Wasted Country"). Just some information. If anybody would like to know more (record label etc) let me know and I'll look it up when I get back home. May take a while though.
