The cd was mostly these guys jaming w/ themselves after being immersed in the real thing, 'tho a few cuts did have the real thing and they gave info for a cd w/ all Baka, but it was too expensive at the time and I forgot about it. Ryko has a great sampler called "the best of both worlds" that came out a few years ago. Like most somplers, it's a bit eratic, but there are some excellent cuts too. The last song on one of the discs is Water Drums 1, by the Baka Forest People, from their ablum Heart of the Forest. The booklet says: "Cradled in the heart of the African rainforest lives one of the oldest and most fragile musical cultures on earth. This album contains the field recordings Martin Cradick brought back to England which formed the inspiration for Baka Beyond's Spirit of the Forest." "The day after Martin recorded the women's voices (singing songs meant to attract game) which set the tone for both albums (Heart and Spirit), the rivers were suddnely full of fish, a group of monkeys moved in overnight, and a deer wsa caught in their traps. Magic? It's magic becasue we don't understand what level it works on." - Folk Roots A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this album goes toward the preservation of the rainforests and the Baka culture. I see that KrW had some comments on this as I write. The above disc is on Ryko, so it shouldn't be too expensive or hard to find. Of course, doesn't address the issue of what Baka Beyond are like, but still.... > > Hildegard von Bingen, can't remember who's doing the music but it isn't > > that Vision thang: Thanks Meth for the pointer to HvB! This one > > will be the Sunday morning coffee&paper CD along with Thomas Tallis. > Have you seen this Meth? Then again, maybe it would just infuriate you, kind of like the faux Hildegard recordings earlier this year. Anyway, from the October Readings list of Louie's Bookstore in Baltimore: "Barbara Lachman will read from "The Journal of Hildegard of Bingen", a fictional diary of the medievel abbess. Well researched and exquisitly written, this book allows a wide audience access to the details of HIldegard's fascinating life and work." (More later if I go.) > Doesn't Rykodisc have a new Paolo Esquivel retrospective out? I heard a > review of it on Fresh Air last week... some pretty scary music has come out > of that guy's brain. :) > Last year Bar-None put out a disc by "esquivel!" called "space-age bachelor pad music". It even has a Matt Groening blurb on the back, claiming "ewquivel is the great unsung genius of mind-curdling space age pop". Whatever. Anyway, the album is hilarious. A weird and wacky mix of just about any kind of music you can think of. When the schmaltzy lounge sounds give way to a wacked out Hawaiin guitar solo in the first song, I lose it every time. Plus, the lyrics, which are usually "zu zu zu zu" but sometimes are "bang" and "pow" are hilarious. After listening to it I find that every non-esquivel song seems to benefit from the addition of a few "zu zu zu"s in it. (Perhaps that's a reason not to consider getting the disc!) I don't have the new album (yet), but a number of the songs that I hadn't heard before made quite a good impression on me. I don't know how they compare to the album versions, but I found that the songs from the first album were almost letter perfect imitations. So the new songs were fresh and interesting, but I felt slightly disappointed by most of the ones I knew well. Perhaps it's an unfair criticism, but on many of those songs, I wanted something more than what I get on the album. The band sounded stupendous, and I loved the songs as much as I loved the album, but I go to a concert to get something different than I can get from listening to an album. I did get a lot of new songs, so that was different, as well as the pleasure of hearing Mary Fahl's husky speaking voice (though I was quite unnerved by her appallingly thin body). She used earphones instead of just the monitor, and they seemed to have trouble getting the sound in her headset mixed to her satisfaction. This led to the most baffling set of gestures between her and the soundman that I have ever seen. As she sang, she would scowl, point in the general direction of a couple of band members, and agitatedly jerk her hand around so that it was completely impossible to figure out what she wanted done with which instrument. Whatever the problems, it generally sounded quite good from the audience, though some of the extra touring members were not very exciting. The guitar player fleshed out the sounds, usually with very "tastefull" solos, but occasionally with long, tedious fills, and his encore freak out was the worst guitar solo I've seen in years. The female keyboard player often provided excellent backing vocals, but when she took the lead for a few lines (I think on "return to me"), her voice seemed really weak. There were some low notes to the show, but there were lots of high ones too. Perfect recreations of the songs from the first OP album are still an excellent way to spend an evening, and the show peaked when the intertwining vocals took a few new directions during "always", before seguing into a more playfull, loping version of "Paths of Desire". Neal ------------------------------ From: abehrend@Direct.CA (Ariane Behrend) Date: Mon, 16 Oct 1995 01:33:38 -0700 Subject: Veda, Dar,new CDs, Heather, etc. Howdy! It's been an ecto kind of a week and a half for me and I thought I'd share it with ya'll. It started with me finally getting to see Veda Hille on Fri. (the 6th). Great show, and I managed to buy the CD from her directly, so it was only $15 :). I like the CD but think the next one will be even better because some of the new songs she does live are excellent! The next day I flew to Ohio to see Dar Williams. Insane, I know, but hey, it was well worth the trip! I *did* use frequent flyer points and went under the pretense of visiting a friend in Columbus :). The show was sooooooo amazing, especially from my front row center spot :). I'm a little biased seeing that I worship Dar, but I don't see how anyone but the most cynical of people could not have enjoyed it. She's just so great live and her new songs, only one of which I had heard before, are all typically brilliant - funny though often more of a 'cleverly disguised melancholy', insightful, amazingly original, etc. I could rave about her for hours, but I already did that on the dar-list, so I'll spare you :). She even dedicated a song to me and mentioned that I had come all the way from Vancouver. I was so touched! Anyway.... I bought four CDs while I was down there, 3 solely due to ecto mention. I've only been on this list for a couple of months, and already you are having a bad influence on me ;)...: October Project - 'Falling Farther In' I was standing in the record store trying to think of things to look for, when 'October Project' popped into my head. I just vaguely remembered reading about them here, but nothing specific since I had only skimmed these posts which I tend to do when I'm in a hurry because I'm on the digest version (actually I think I'll switch because I think I'd prefer more posts to huge chunks)....I found it and liked the cover art, so I bought it :).... My intital reaction was somewhat negative. I thought it sounded too polished and kind of boring, but it has totally grown on me! Love Mary's voice! Jonatha Brooke and The Story - 'Plumb' Had the opposite reaction to this one. I liked it initially but am starting to like it somewhat less upon repeated listens for some reason. I'm going to see them on Wednesday, so we'll see... Jewel - 'Pieces of You' Finally got that one and can now look back on the 'Alanis vs. Jewel' discussion somewhat more informed. [I still haven't broken down and bought Alanis' album though, although I must admit that I quite like her second single 'Hand in my Pocket' (?), which has been getting a lot of play on MuchMusic, though the line "I'm brave but I'm chickenshit" pretty much ruins the whole song imho :)] Anyway.... Jewel.... hmmmmmmm...... I'm not sure yet. I'm having trouble even getting past the title track, which I find intensely annoying... it usually prompts me to switch to a different CD. I see the point of those who called it naive, though I usually don't mind a bit of idealism... this is truly painful though. I did listen to the whole thing once or twice while cleaning and think it's ok though some songs are certainly better than others. I'll have to give this one a few more listens before making up my mind ... Ferron - 'Phantom Center' Have been meaning to get this one for a while and found it for only $9! Love her intensity - esp. on 'White Wing Mercy'! BIG NEWS: I then found 4 Happy CDs. At a store called Thunderpussy (yah!) :).I was too broke to buy them at this point mind you, but at least I *saw* them, which made me feel at least slightly more worthy of being on this list :). One of them had one of those scary monsters Holly mentioned, and I had a similar initial reaction- eek! what is up with that!? :). I'm trading Ariel a Veda CD for 'Rhodesongs', so I *will* soon be introduced to Happy! The night I got home from Columbus, I went to see Heather Nova. I think I would have *really* enjoyed it if I had not been completely exhausted and in a terrible mood. As it was, it's all kind of a blurr. I'll definately give 'Oyster' a listen though. Well, that's enough rambling for now. Looking forward to 'The Story' on Wed. and Sharon Shannon on Thurs.... Oh, and does anyone here have any info/opinions on Yo La Tengo ??? Someone from the dar-list wants me to go to that on Fri., but I'm not sure... It's $15.25, so it will take one of two things to get me to go: a) a job b) more convincing Any takers? I have a concert recording, called "BBC Radio 1 Live" or something imaginative like that. Judging by the track selection, and the number of stumbles, it probably predates Scarlet, although the dates in the liner notes don't bear this out. I agree that Scarlet is more consistent than the first album. It's a very good album, with some outstanding tracks ("December" and "Silver and Gold" come to mind). I end up listening to Touched more often than Scarlet, though, because some of the pretty songs on Scarlet got dosed (injected? innoculated? too much X-files?) with guitarzz (and they mutated into aliens :). "The Empty Dancehall" is totally ruined (for me) by a minute- long snarling power-chord thrash that sounds nothing like the rest of the song. Note that I'm not slamming power-chord thrashes in general; "Silver and Gold" is built on them. I'm only objecting to the ones that sound more like the guitarist wanted this hot lick used on the album somewhere. The perpetrator does *not* appear on Touched (and in fact there is a sly, good-riddance-to-egotistical-guitarists reference in one of the songs :). For me, this makes Touched a much more comfortable and enjoyable listen than either of the first two. "Are You Lonely" is worth the price of admission all by itself. > I know the first two albums were released in the US. One of the web-based CD stores has only Scarlet or only the first album, I don't remember which. Six months ago, they had both. I saw a German pressing of the first album last weekend, for US$21. It had a collection of catalog numbers for several countries on the back. I had to get Touched as a UK import; I've never seen it in a US pressing. > If you liked Scarlet you should definitely get All About Eve next. > Both these albums should be required ecto-fodder. > > -Anthony Heartily agreed! Saw Lisa Loeb (the one where she's washing stuff in a tub, and in a sparkly dress in the full moon in water), and thought it was pretty cool. I don't own any LL cds, so I don't remember the title. Also saw Alanis (hand in my pocket), and thought it was ok, but liked "You Oughta Know" better... somewhat more powerful and evocative for me... Joan Osborne's video of "One of Us" was fairly plain. I think that one or two of her songs on "relish" were great, the rest very solid, middle of the road pop/rock. Musically, nice to listen to but lyrically not as appealing as many of my other favorites. Heather Nova's video of "Walk this World" was disappointing in that it didn't live up to the grandiose pictures that were previously painted in my mind in response to the same song. Somehow bringing her down to earth, captured in video frames, and cast in that format was somewhat of a let-down. I tend to dislike extremely any hints of playing into the "sex symbol" imagery, and although more tasteful than much of the tripe that comes through tv, it had a bit too much of that type of overtones for me. I don't know if it was intended, or just the medium which cast it in that light for me, but..... as some of you know, I'm a bit of a media recluse and am a bit sensitive to the cultural mainstream...
