Indigo Girls concert at Shepherds Bush in the UK had been included on the new double live CD "1200 Curfews", but in a sleepen stupor (like a drunken stupor, only less drunk, and much more sleepy :) - I deleted his post. But basically - there's a bit of debate going on on the IG list right now as to whether the songs which are listed on the album actually came from where they are said to come from - eg. apparently one of the songs which was ostensibly recorded in Alaska (World Falls) was taken from a show in Chicago; similiarly Galileo - I can't remember where it says on the CD that it was recorded, but it's really from a show in Ann Arbor. I don't have the CD yet so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details (also I'm in a huge hurry to go out, so I'm a bit fuzzy on everything else as well) - but I do believe that some of the songs on the CD *are* from the London gig - or are at least are claimed to have been. If that makes sense. :) One of the theories going around is that the producers have spliced choice crowd noise from one city with choice songs from other cities; only on a few songs though. Oh, and a track from the Shepherds Bush show is included on the new "Out Loud" CD - a benefit for the human rights of lesbians and gays - which is an excellent CD and also has tracks by Melissa Ferrick, disappear fear, Throwing Muses and U2 among many many others. The IG track is "This Train (Revised)". Oh, and yes - the upcoming 'Disney Channel Special' which will be aired sometime this month I believe in the US is a documentary on the IGs (I *think*) in which a lot of footage is apparently taken from the Shepherds Bush gig. The entire show was recorded by the Philly cable station Prism and is going to be shown in January. Hopefully Prism will have a free installation signup before then so I can tape it. October Project was also in the World Cafe studios on Thursday to tape an appearance that should hopefully be broadcast very soon. It's these special ecto extras about Philly that make me almost reconsider my planned move to the Woodstock area...though there are some ecto encouragements around there too. (not to bag on juliana, i love her music, but that was rather stupid thing to say). for more info on the gender bias in rock check out LIZ EVANS book women, sex and rock and roll (or something like that). liz interviews about a dozen women singers/musicians including tori amos, emma and miki from lush, kristin hersh (throwing muses), tanya donelly, kim deal, and marianne faithful. i shall stop rambling. i just want to bring up the fact that i love the softies new album. check it out. it is called IT'S LOVE. soft pretty indie pop music with roses beautiful floaty girl voice. acoustic and simple guitar work it is real pretty. makes me want to smile. :) oh yeah and did anyone tape modern rock live about two months ago when jewel was on it? she was on it along with a then unknown band to me called garbage. she made some quip about that. Of those I like the first two best: Scarlet is very good throughout, while All About Eve is less consistent but it's best songs soar above everything else they've done. Touched by Jesus is also a good album, but not as inspired as the first two for me. I found Ultraviolet dissapointing, and haven't listened to it much. I have an idea that there was something else that they released after that, but I didn't get it and can't remember the details. (anyone?). I know the first two albums were released in the US. I haven't seen them for a while and think they might be deleted here, but they should still be relatively easy to find. I don't think Touched by Jesus or Ultraviolet were released in the US, at any rate I got my copies in the UK. I have no idea about availability of such things in New Zealand I'm afraid. Well I've just come back from seeing "Strange Days," a new film written by James (Terminator) Cameron and directed by his ex-wife. Strange Days, when a highly realistic torrent of savage violence is passed off as entertainment? (liberally seasoned with soundbite soliloquies, of course, so that everyone knows it's a *moral* film that's supposed to make you think hard about complex *moral* issues.) I went in thinking it was another VR film, which is more or less is, (lots of William Gibsonesque "simstim" detail cribbed) but it turned out to be one of the vicious films I've seen in a long while. I just thought I'd mention it because it has a horrifically sadistic rape scene (lovingly shot in the first person, closeup) that goes on for quite a while, which I didn't know upon going into the film. Interesting, given that it was directed by a woman. So consider this a consumer warning. Still, the film was an extremely slick, technically awesome and excitingly action-packed piece of celluloid with amazingly seamless digital editing - when they weren't revelling in the snuff scenes. Just don't read Cameron's glib sophistry in justifying his film if you want to see it. That, perhaps, is a truer lie. - Neil K. - -- Neil K. Just a few bands that are all-male except for a female bassist: White Zombie Talking Heads Smashing Pumpkins Jawbox Green Apple Quickstep ... In contrast, there are very few bands where the only female is the drummer (Mo Tucker from the Velvet Underground and Karen Carpenter are the only ones that pop to mind), and even fewer bands where the only female is the lead guitarist. Yet there are gobs of bands with female lead singers fronting all-male bands, as most of us on ecto are quite aware of. :) My own theory is that lead guitar and drums are considered more "manly", because they allow the player to "show off", which is more of a traditionally masculine trait. Bassists don't typically have solos; they have more of a supporting role. Of course, female lead singers show off their pipes all the time, so there's where the theory kind of falls down. But think about it: when's the last time you saw a band with an emotive male lead singer, and a woman on screaming guitar solos? Now I'm trying to think of >other female bassists (or is that bassests)? Hm. Now you've got me thinking... Funny, how the rhythm section of a band is still a largely male preserve. I can think of only a few well-known bassists who are women. Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads and Hole's Courtney Love (sometimes) come to mind... Spirit of the West's Linda McRae plays bass, trading off with Hugh McMillan when she needs to pick up the accordion. I suppose most "girl bands" like Cub or L7 are obvious candidates for female bass players. Mae Moore plays bass on some of her songs. Some rather obscure ones like the bassist from the Spoons (Tracy Horn was her name?) or Laura Cesar, acoustic bass for the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. (had to look that one up!) Wonder why that is? Maybe the whole thing of the bass being the lower end of the audio spectrum, and men's voices generally being deeper, so the sort of association is formed. I'm more inclined to consider the social aspects, though. Thinking back to high school, where the breathy sounds of the band meant that 500 girls had signed up to play flute, because flutes are "nice" girl instruments or something puzzling like that. Unlike, say, the euphonium or the tuba. A friend of mine tried to concoct a complicated theory concerning talented female artists and their bass-playing partners, but couldn't get very far with that one. Just Kate Bush (with Del Palmer) and Joni Mitchell (with Larry Klein). And, perhaps, Jane Siberry and John Switzer, once upon a time. Though, hm, perhaps you could add Happy Rhodes and Kevin Bartlett to that list - he plays bass for her sometimes... Well. Now that I think of it, maybe he had something there. :) All four men have worked as producers on their partners' albums as well as playing bass... At the time my friend mentioned it, though, I thought it was wishful thinking, because he was learning bass at the time. >BTW--I really like the eudora colorization you did!
