It's certainly been a change of pace from Eugene. Sunday night Doug Burks and I saw Ferron in concert. It was really pretty fun, and she has excellent stage patter. She also had a great backing band that added an upbeat flavor to her folky songs. Tuesday night (_late_ Tuesday night; the show didn't start till 10) Neile Graham, Jim Gurley, Doug Burks, and I went to see Heather Nova. The venue (some bar called Moe's) had much the same concert facilities that some of you have been complaining about for Heather's venue in New York. However, since I am always sitting down wherever I go I didn't even think about the lack of seating being a problem :-). Having never heard Heather Nova before, I had no idea what to expect; I was generally pleased with her show. She has a great voice, and I do tend to like crunchy stuff like she does. She was definitely more interesting to me than Ferron. What I considered to be the real musical discovery of the night, though, was Heather's opening band Ben Folds Five. When they first came on, I immediately thought "Oh no, boyz with guitarz." Then they started playing, and I upgraded them to "boyz with drums, electric bass, and what sounds like a piano." Then I found myself really starting to enjoy them, and moved up where I could get a better view of the stage, and saw that it really _was_ a piano -- the most beat-up grand piano I've ever seen. But the player (the Ben Folds in the band name?) was dextrous with several different musical styles, including what I could only describe as grunge-rock honky-tonk. The band sang well, had great lyrics, and commanding but friendly stage presence. I found out why the piano was so beat up when Ben (?) did various things like play percussive bass stomps with one foot while working the other end of the keyboard with his hands, and at one point slammed the lid and walked around on top as he sang. To sum it all up, I think they're just plain fun and I would definitely go see them again. It was also quite impressive watching them pack up the piano after their set -- apparently Heather had roadies, but not for the opening band. They packed up and hauled off all their own stuff, including the piano. Neile and Jim, on the other hand, hated Ben Folds Five, saying they sounded too much like some 80s band called Squeeze that they also hated. I have to admit that they (Ben Folds Five, not Neile and Jim) have moments of bubblegum pop sounds that aren't my usual taste. But this is the only time I've ever had more fun listening to an opening act than the main attraction. So I definitely have two more things to add to my CD shopping list. My suspicion is that the Heather Nova album will sound better recorded (if only because I won't be listening to it at immense volume when I'm too tired). On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if the Ben Folds Five album doesn't have all the energy and spirit of their live show. ------------------------------ From: Steve VanDevender Date: Thu, 12 Oct 1995 01:33:29 -0700 Subject: the evils of karaoke Tonight, for a brief unending time, I was trapped in a karaoke bar with people who up to that point seemed to be an enjoyable group of friends. Karaoke must be Japanese for "having to listen to music that you absolutely hate be sung badly by amateurs." I had many thoughts which unfortunately were not enough to distract me from the excruciating surroundings: * This must be what music lovers are punished with in hell. * I really miss my CD collection at home. * There are songwriters out there who have written unspeakably terrible songs that are now immortalized on these karaoke laserdiscs. * Some people have such bad taste in music that they should not be allowed to live. * Some people have such bad singing voices they should not be allowed to live. * Music is a matter best left to professionals who care about what they do. Apparently in Japan karaoke is practiced in small, soundproof booths that hold you and about three close friends. It does not surprise me that the American version instead crassly exposes innocent bystanders to such horror. ------------------------------ From: bridgesm@logica.co.uk (Martin G Bridges) Date: Thu, 12 Oct 1995 10:01:30 +0100 Subject: Re: sleepy in Seattle De-lurking after a while to protest: > >Neile and Jim, on the other hand, hated Ben Folds Five, saying >they sounded too much like some 80s band called Squeeze that they >also hated. The reason I am writing is that I have read a number of references to someting called "The Keep" by Happy Rhodes.... is that a new CD by Happy Rhodes? If so, when was it released? I can also report that Happy has quite a few more fans over here... whenever I take music to a dinner party or social gathering, I always take Warpaint and Building the Colossus (the only two I possess, so far...) with me. I quietly put them on and just sit back and wait. Without fail, after a few songs, somebody says something like "Hey, whose CD is this? It's good!", after which I explain and tell them about Happy and how I got to hear of her music. Quite a few have asked me if her music is available here (in South Africa) and I have to tell them (sadly!) that it isn't (although Warpaint was released locally, but I haven't seen it anywhere other than the one CD that I bought).
