The thing about a lot of our favorite ecto artists is that they don't sell tons of records, and I think it's only fair for them to make a bit of money from the small group that buys their CD's and gets so much enjoyment out of them (plus it helps them to not get dropped by their record label). If I can get a complete album on tape via the net instead of buying it, that's not fair to the artist. On the other hand, if I get a tape with a mix of songs from various artists, then I might find one I like and be encouraged to go out and get their entire CD, so to me that scenario is pretty cool. And with the live performances of course, the people trading those are likely such big fans of the artist to begin with that they already have the CD's and have spent money on their concerts, which is what makes the tdp cool. > Please react, respond, educate, and enlighten me. I first came across The Violet Hour when they played support to Marillion on the latter's "Holidays In Eden" tour. The All About Eve comparison is pretty accurate. Also a hint of Jethro Tull due to prominent flute usage. Their lead singer was Doris Brendel, daughter of Alfred for all classical music buffs. They only released one album (the name of which escapes me) and a couple of singles with non-album b- and c-sides. I heard somewhere that they were dropped by their record company and have since split up. Too bad. Any mail regarding the Ecto birthday list should now be sent to matthews%tirk@uunet.uu.net. If they're sent here I will still get them, of course, but I'm going to keep all the data at home. This means you probably won't get a reply until after working hours. It also means that the birthday mail is now at the whim of whenever tirk can successfully connect to its service provider. It checks many times a day (especially when it's got something to send), so this should not be a problem. On the EWS front, I ended a six week CD draught with five CDs. Pretty small when you think about it, but there's this thing called a townhouse I'm planning on buying (EWS on steroids) in under a year. Jeffy keeps adding CDs to my "you have to get this!" list, and this minisplurge helped shorten that list a bit. I got Heather Nova's Oyster, the new October Project, Dionne Farris' _Wild Seed, Wild Flower_, Elton John's _Made in England_, and Live's _Throwing Copper_. Lest I give Jeffy a bad (if not weird) name for that "y-h-t-g-t!" list, only the first two were on it. The others I bought because of videos or songs I've heard and liked. And, well, because I felt like it and those were the ones I remembered. And I have a really hard time remembering which CDs I want to buy. Yes, I bought this (_Boneyard Beach_) on the basis of hearing a cut on the CMJ sampler. I would say that it makes me miss the blackgirls even more than I already did. Dana Kletter trades off the lead vocals with a guy (whose name escapes me right now). Generally the songwriting is weaker than the blackgirls, but of course, Dana Kletter's voice is just as wonderful as ever. I still like the song from the CMJ sampler a lot though, but the rest doesn't do all that much for me. I bought it a while back but don't play it that much. Okay... a few weeks ago (before you joined up, I guess) I answered those selfsame questions for our own Bob Brown... so if everyone will please excuse me, I'll just repeat that information. I'll get back to new stuff after this. :) How to get there? By train. :) I can't really give good driving directions, but it's located at the corner of West 4th Street and Mercer, in Greenwich Village on the NYU campus. Someone more NY-savvy than I am can give you good driving and parking directions (there's a place we usually park further down on Mercer when we drive in, else we park in Hoboken and take the PATH train in and get off at 9th Street). The only way to get tickets in advance is to go to the Bottom Line box office and purchase them in person. However, you'll probably be okay if you get them the day of the show. There are always two shows at the Bottom Line: 7:30 and 10:30 PM. Doors open at 7 and 10. Some tips if you want to get a good seat and/or get food before the show: 1.) Get there *very* early. If you're alone or with one other person you have a much better chance of sitting up front -- they seat you when you come in, so ask the usher. 2.) It holds about 150, I'd say, all at tables arranged on two levels. 3.) There is a one drink minimum, and they have overpriced hot dog and nacho- type stuff to eat. I'd recommend going around the corner to either of two great, reasonably priced Italian restaurants just two blocks down Mercer: Cafe Panne e Chocolate is the first you'll come to, and a few doors down is Poppolini. Either one is very good. Take a left at the corner past the Bottom Line and go down two blocks and then a left. There are other places to eat along the way -- a Mexican place and a couple others. Hope that answers some of your questions. Have a good time! Ariane reported: > Oh yeah, and I also got to see Sarah on Thursday at that hockey > stadium opening ceremony.
