Been quite busy the past couple of weeks... woj and I went to Montreal last weekend, just to be tourists and enjoy the city. Ecto lurker Justin and his housemate Liz saved our butts the first night when we arrived and discovered a screwup had left us with no room at the B&B we'd booked -- the ecto hostel system works yet again! Thanks, guys. :) Not much of musical interest going on up there -- Crash Vegas was playing one night, but we were too zonked and decided to go to bed instead. Not much of interest in the CD store department, either. But we had a great time, and will go back. Have acquired a few new CDs lately, most of which I haven't had a chance to listen to yet since we just got them this afternoon. :) But I have listened to Patty Larkin's new one _Strangers World_ a few times, and I highly recom- mend it to all, even if you haven't been into her work in the past. (For reference, please note that I sold back her last one, _Angels Running_ -- I think that's the only disc I've ever not kept!) _SR_ has a lot more instrumentation, Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball on backing vox on several songs and Bruce Cockburn in the background on "Open Arms (don't explain)" (a song which I *swear* I've heard someone else do -- can anyone else help me out here? Am I hallucinating?). Larkin even plays electric guitar all over the album. "Johnny Was A Pyro" is the best single song of the year, imho - not only does it have great lyrics, but it's got a killer hook that just won't go away. The rest of the album is consistently strong, and the liner notes are a hoot -- Larkin subtitles the songs (e.g. "Mary Magdalene": "I think I saw her coming out of the subway"), and thanks a friend "for helping me finally meet Laurie Anderson", which I took as a good sign from the first. :) Did I mention I like this album a lot? :) Today we went shopping and picked up Jane Siberry's _Maria_ on CD (I won't go into my experience trying to get this album at the local Strawberries the day it came out -- I'll just say one word: Clueless); as well as Lisa Gerrard's _The Mirror Pool_; Jonatha Brooke and The Story's _Plumb_; the _Brothers McMullen_ soundtrack; and the new one by Anonymous 4: _The Lady And The Lamb_, 13th-15th century chant and polyphony based on Mary's experiences at the foot of the Cross, which promises to be as stunningly beautiful as all their other releases. Haven't listened to any of the above yet, but will report in once I have. A word about _Maria_: yes, it is very different. But since when has Jane *not* gone in a new direction with each album? (Well, I guess since between _No Borders Here_ and _The Speckless Sky_, but you know what I mean. :) I think in its own way it's a brilliant piece of work, and I'm going to be finding new things in it for a long time. (The above was written *very slowly* while watching the absolutely incredible match between Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Mary Joe Fernandez in the US Open... wow!!! And they say women's tennis is boring. Hah.) Here's an interesting Jane tidbits shamelessly stolen from the siblings list because I know there are a few people here who aren't on the list but might be interested anyway. >JANE SIBERRY TO GUEST ON CYBER-TALK(TM) SEPT. 11 > >BURBANK, Calif., Aug. 30 -- Canadian singer/songwriter Jane Siberry >will be the featured guest on the Monday, Sept. 11 edition of Warner >Bros./Reprise Records' weekly interactive talk show, Cyber- Talk, on >America Online. Does anyone else out there get Echoes at a time when humans can listen? Have they been playing this a lot? We also got the radio CD5 (of course), and I must say the acoustic version of "Collective Heart" is quite impressive. "Look For The Child" isn't the version she did on WFUV, it turns out -- I think I like it better with more instrumentation. Many thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. It was a nice day -- we discovered a great Japanese restaurant near us, and I acquired a bread machine. Despite the popular adage, I could live very well on bread alone, thanks, and now I can make my own. Yum. :) Hmmm... I have a few things to reply to... will do that next post. If you're alone or with one other person you have a much better chance of sitting up front -- they seat you when you come in, so ask the usher. 2.) It holds about 150, I'd say, all at tables arranged on two levels. 3.) There is a one drink minimum, and they have overpriced hot dog and nacho- type stuff to eat. I'd recommend going around the corner to either of two great, reasonably priced Italian restaurants just two blocks down Mercer: Cafe Panne e Chocolate is the first you'll come to, and a few doors down is Poppolini. Either one is very good. Take a left at the corner past the Bottom Line and go down two blocks and then a left. There are other places to eat along the way -- a Mexican place and a couple others. 4.) If you sit up front you'll be very much in the non-smoking section, so it shouldn't be too bad. >I'm taking a friend up to for the day (driving) and any other tips such as >good CD stores (that sell used CD's), interesting book stores, etc. would be >greatly appreciated. Well, if you stand in front of the Bottom Line and look one block down the street you'll see Tower Records. ;> If you continue down West 4th to the corner of Lafayette you'll come to the Tower Records Outlet, possibly the most dangerous place in New York City -- only go in there if you have a couple hours to kill! Tower Books is across the street from that, as well. >Any tips on where to park the car would be helpful as >well. Further past Mercer (the opposite direction from the restaurants) we almost always find parking. There are some lots on Lafayette too if you're willing to pay for it. I feel really sad about this... :( Michael Ende wrote my all-time-favourite book, "Momo", which ever since I first read it as a child has been a sort of guide for how I would want to be if I would ever have to grow up, and later it put me on the road to meditation and Zen. It still _is_ my favourite book. I also love "The Neverending Story". Both books mean a lot to me. I'll miss their dad... Funny thing is, for some reason or other I never read anything else by Michael Ende, and I don't really know all that much about him. I know of one other children's book that was published some years ago ("Der Zaubertrank" was the German title I think). And his surrealistic novel "The Mirror in the Mirror" (not sure of that title either), which I picked up a couple of times, and put down as many times again before I could even get started in it. But he probably wrote more. Does anybody of you know anything about Michael Ende, or other books by him? Thanks!
