I've actually never considered Letters to Cleo to be similar to Juliana Hatfield or the former Blake Babies (of which Juliana was a member), except for the fact that they're both good pop. But, then, maybe I just never considered it? I would NOT consider it a trend for Boston, though. There's such a wide variety of genres covered, many doing fairly well, in the Boston Music Scene -- from blues to folk to pop to rock to hardcore to power rock/punk to jazz (though I'm not as up on the local jazz scene). Some examples of other bands that have broken into the national scene over the past few years (or have been recently signed to a major or larger indie label) include Gigolo Aunts, Jennifer Trynin, Stompbox (members have gone on to other things), Dambuilders, Mary Lou Lord, Tracy Bonham, Talking to Animals, G. Love & Special Sauce, Orangutang (members have gone on to other things), Otis, Cold Water Flat, Dirt Merchants, Fuzzy, Janet LaValley, 360's, Helium, and the list goes on. But, the main point of listing those various bands is that they cover a range of different styles. Perhaps I should slow down on seeing bands. ;) I maintain a little bit of information on the local Boston [Rock] Music Scene at: http://www.research.digital.com/CRL/Boston/Music/ for those that are interested. > Letters To Cleo is a 5-piece band by the way, 2 girls and 3 guys. The first was _Aurora Gory Alice_, initially released on Boston-based label, CherryDisc Records, then reissued on Giant Records. _Wholesale Meats and Fish_ is also on Giant Records. I like the first album, myself. The reissue was remastered and had two of the songs redone. A tidbit (not totally music related) about the second album -- the cover art is from a painting by an awesome, local artist and musician, Dean Styers. Dean is also the drummer for the band Milkmoney. Hope you enjoy the Letters to Cleo album. They should be taking another quick 2 month tour around the country soon. So, keep an eye out for them. They'll also be playing the MassCann Rally being held on the Boston Common on Saturday, 23 September 1995; this is a free outdoor event. I believe it will be their only show in Boston for several months. For those recommending this in light of _the mask and mirror_, way to go! The two discs go hand in hand. I would consider, thought _the mask and mirror_ more layered; more textured. Is there some other place I can get info on Loreena? A mailing list? Since I don't have ftp/telnet/web, would someone be willing to email me any info they might have? An odd aside: a local "hobby" shop stocks most of her stuff. This shop is one of the most unique I know. It panders to the Sci-Fi crowd, as well as gamers, modelers and comic book readers. However, they also have a large "mythical" theme, so it's not unusual they would carry Loreena (or Enya, or Clannad, etc.). You can go in anytime, and expect to hear some wonderful music. Many of us have seen her live, some of us multiple times. I saw the tour for _The Visit_ in a tiny little auditorium on the campus of a local college I'd never even heard of before buying the tickets. General admission, and we arrived early enough to pick seats about 6 feet from Loreena's spot on the slightly raised wooden "stage." Loreena simply blew me away -- her voice is actually *more* pure and beautiful live than it is on CD...a frightening concept, but I'd say the same is true of Sarah and a few other Ecto faves (I'm not sure I've seen Happy enough to have decided if this is the case with her as well) The tour for _The Mask and the Mirror_ was also wonderful, though I didn't care for the set list nearly as much as the one at the first show. For one, I was pretty well crushed that she abbreviated "The Lady of Shalott." I also missed a bunch of the older stuff, which was new to me the first time I saw her, but which I was eagerly hoping to hear by the next go-round (including "Standing Stones" and "Dickens Dublin" (I think that's the new of the track).
