"To have" and "to know" in these sentences are both examples of infinitive verbs. An infinitive verb is one that is not inflected for person or number, and therefore represents an action in a nonspecific context. The first sentence could be interpreted as "I would like "; the second as "I would look at my watch ". A more classic example is "To sleep, perchance to dream". The speaker is not saying "I have slept, I have dreamed" (definite past tense), "I am sleeping, I am dreaming" (present tense), or "I will sleep, I will dream" (future tense); the speaker is talking about the actions or states of sleeping and dreaming, not anchored to time or person. In the case of sentences of the form "I would to ", the speaker is usually talking about an intended relationship to an action or state, a less specific notion than your idea about " causes " or vice versa. describes the relationship, the state or action -- liking to have, looking to know. The old adage about not splitting infinitives comes from an old campaign by grammarians who believed that English grammar should be modeled after Latin. In Latin, verb tense, number and person were marked by indivisible affixes on the verbs; in English, verb tense number and person are often marked by auxiliary verbs. However, infinitives in English are almost invariably marked by using the word "to" before the verb; it was the belief of these grammarians that the infinitive should be indivisible in English as it was in Latin. I happen to side with the grammarians who believe that English should not be held to the standards of a language that is so fundamentally different in morphology and grammar, so I would choose to sometimes split infinitives :-). ------------------------------ From: phanes@community.net (Xenophanes!) Cheers, Joel joel@cyber.net ------------------------------ From: abehrend@Direct.CA (Ariane Behrend) Date: Mon, 28 Aug 1995 02:03:05 -0700 Subject: shane,...and me Howdy! Some of you may remember me as "David Dalton's friend Ariane", who inadvertently started a brief Dar Williams thread a while back when David posted some private e-mail comments of mine about Dar being 'the best', unbeknownst to me. Seeing that Mr. Dalton was recently referred to on this very list as the "esteemed David Dalton", I hope this gives me some 'clout by association' :). The reason I've decided to stop lurking on this list is the recent Shane MacGowan thread, combined with the fact that I returned from his concert only moments ago. Now, I can't say that I'm a huge Pogues fan, although I *am* a big fan of Celtic music and *do* own the "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" album. I normally would not have attende this concert, especially not at the $24.50 ticket price, if it hadn't been for the fact that my friends' band 'The Paperboys' opened for them, and I got in for free. I had wanted to write a nasty review for this list , to the effect of...Shane was disgustingly drunk, falling down, couldn't remember lyrics, etc., concluding that the Paperboys were far superior :). Unfortunaltely, I found myself really enjoying the show (which may or may not have had something to do with the fact that someone gave me like a quadrouple+ rum & Coke for watching his drinks while he went to the bathroom, when I was selling Paperboys CDs :)). Damn. It's so much harder to write 'nice' reviews :). I'll try. So I started off in a very cynical (and sober) mood, judgingly observing increasingly drunken fans stagerring toward the front of the stage during the Paperboys' set. I remembered the story of why the original openers, a fine Canadian band called the 'Waltons' had canncelled their opening spot for the tour...ie. because they could stand the abuse from Popes fans not longer. The Paperboys seemed to fare somewhat better, suffering only the occasional mumbled insult, although the look on some people's faces seemed to say "this is cute, but where the fuck is Shane". OK, so, ... for one thing, Shane *looked* surprisingly good, whereas I had expected dhim to look as scary as his pictures. He even looked vaguely healthy :). Secondly, he did not fall down once, although he seemed to cling on to his mike stand for dear life :). Thirdly, he seemed to remember his lyrics, though most of these were fairly unintelligable, combined with whatever he managed to mumble between songs. He didn't seem any more drunk than most of his fans flailing about in the fenced-off moshpit below, though he *did* have the occasional swig of the beer bottle resting at this feet. The band was great (!), something which became particularly obvious when Shane disappeared briefly during the middle of the set, leaving them to do a jig or reel of some sort (I still can't tell the difference :)). Bass, whistle/electric fiddle, banjo, accordion, and drums. Drums very loud most of the time, but not drowning out the rest *too* much. A bit garbled, along with the vocals, but nevertheless enjoyable. The sell-out crowd seemed to love it, and it was hard not to get caught up in that. Unfortunately, they only played for about an hour, from 10:45 to 11:45, including two encores, introduced by the drummer as (1) "yes, you mother fuckers, thank you very much" and (2) "thank you very fuckin' much." The only really dumb and annoying part of the evening was a lame rendition of the "Hippy Hippy Shake", though again, the crowd loved it.... So, let me put it this way... I had a (surprisingly) good time, but I wouldn't run out and buy the album, or the T-Shirt sporting (front): I MAY HAVE FUCKED YOUR MISSUS/ (back): BUT I NEVER FUCKED YOUR DAUGHTER :). So...since I *had* wanted to say that Shane sucked and the Paperboys were far superior, I'll still sneak in a quick plug for them :)... They have a much 'cleaner' 'Celtic folk-rocky' sound, and are a great band you should check out if you get a chance. They are about to go on a cross-Canada tour... if anyone is interested in dates or CD info, please write to moi. By way of a bit of an intro for myself, though i realize I've probably taken up enough space, I'll just quickly mention some bands I like... First, I am embarassed to admit that I had never heard of Happy Rhodes before David convinced me to sign on to this list, and have still never heard any of her music, though I promise to buy some as soon as I manage to track it down (which, I suspect, may be difficult around here). So, what's and "ecto" anyway!? :) Well, here it is (in no particular order- changes with mood-, except that Dar is pretty much at the top at the moment.. thanx to those who agreed with me :))... *Dar Williams *Spirit of the West (Vancouver) *Sarah *Tori *Loreena *Indigo Girls *10000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant *Ferron *The Pedestrians (great band from Bellingham, WA- anyone heard of them!?) *Ani DiFranco *Laura Love (Seattle) *Things of Stone and Wood (Melbourne, Australia- excellent!- anyone else know them?) *Johnny Clegg & Savuka OK, that's it for now.. better get some sleep.. my head is still spinning...
