I really liked Massive Blur--but bought it for $1.99 used, so it was definitely worth it. I find her much more compelling than Liz Phair, but most don't agree. Actually Happy Song is not typical of the rest of Melissa's work. Most of her stuff is not nearly so happy. In fact, it's rumored she wrote Happy Song because her record company said, "Can't you write a happy song?" She's definitely not country, but perhaps could be classified by some as folk (mainly since she often plays with just acoustic guitar). Definitely check her out. I saw her perform live in a coffee house--$2 show and it was quite incredible. She's very intense and she has one of the more unique voices in the business, IMHO. My e-mail address will be good through friday though, but I'll be out of the office tomorrow and wanted to be sure my unsubscribe worked. Anyway, I'm heading out to Minneapolis to start a new job there. Hopefully I'll be resubscribing to ecto in late August/early September. I know it's only about two weeks away, but it will be a long time without ecto. Any Minneapolisites going to Heather Nova at 7th St. Entry? Any advice on how best to see shows there? Are they general admission or do you need to get tickets in advance? Maybe we can have a mini-ecto gathering there. I'm looking forward to it. It's cool that its the first place on the tour. Does anyone know if this is her first U.S. tour? Anyone know what happened to Jane Siberry's new release? None of the stores I went to yesterday had it, Heather Nova's Oyster or Holly Cole's new album. What's the deal? Well, its been fun, and as I said, I'll be here until Friday, so if you have any answers to my questions, you might want to send them direct. I'll probably be unsubscribing this afternoon. And to think I missed it all by holing up in a windowless PC lab, composing yesterday's megapost. The things I do for you guys, honestly :-). By the time I knocked off early to go see _Smoke_ before it gets bumped from the art house, it was sunny and warm, albeit with puddles on the ground. BTW: I think I recall, WRT Valerie's where-are-they-now queries, reading that someone from Spandau Ballet was either doing a solo act, or in some other group, or did the music for a movie, I forget the details. I read recently--I think it was in a review of a Rhino compilation on the 80s--that Martha Davis had switched careers, and was now an upholsterer in LA. A recent study claims that married men enjoy greater longevity, because they have someone to nag them in the direction of good health habits. It soon occurred to me that nobody was better suited to nag Kurt Cobain in that direction than Courtney Love. Back to the drawing board, O theory builders :-). Someone wondered in these pages last week, how it would make Happy feel for Jerry Garcia to die on her birthday. I would conjecture that she feels not very differently than does Madonna, WRT to the coincidence of Elvis dying on her birthday (today). OTOH, I'm beginning to think that it was fortuitous, in retrospect, that the official Katemas bash in this town was held in advance of her real birthday, that being the date that Harold picked to do the desertion thing :-). Mitch ------------------------------ From: maeldun@i-2000.com (Michael Doyle) Date: Wed, 16 Aug 1995 16:34:55 -0400 Subject: Recent grabs: Mellonta Tauta, lovesliescrushing... ... and Soul Whirling Somewhere. CDs by these three groups landed in my mailbox last week, having been ordered from Darkwave the week before. Soul Whirling Somewhere, _Eating The Sea_ I have been mesmerized for some time by the Soul Whirling Somewhere track that leads off projekt's 1994 _Beneath the Icy Floe_ collection. And that's exactly what this album is -- mesmerizing. I used to be into ambient music when time was (when WNYC's "New Sounds" program was still playing Windham Hill releases). This album has reminded me of how much I like it. It conveys the essence of one of those dreams where you're underwater and still can breathe. Ambient yet compelling; soul-felt stuff. lovesliescrushing, _bloweyelashwish_ The Darkwave catalog description of lovesliescrushing as "beautiful, textured noise" is dead-on. There's a lot of white noise and random noise laying over echoey guitars and vocals. Very impressionistic and haunting. Melodies are minimalist. If you want to do the " meets " thing, I'd say try black tape for a blue girl meets the experimental noise avatar of Controlled Bleeding. With its emphasis on white noise, lovesliescrushing also is probably good music to fall asleep to. However, I'm kinda scared of playing it in the dark. Mellonta Tauta, _Sun Fell_ Anyone who has heard _Heavenly Voices (I)_ *must* remember Mellonta Tauta. Disc 1, Track 16, "Pull the Chariot," remember? A carousel-ride of light and sighs, cellos, guitars, and most of all that childlike voice -- seemed like the sound of life embracing the universe. There are some songs that cause the listener to fall in love. They create the experience in the listener of the trembling joy of falling -- though not with a person or the artist or even the song, just with the moment. "Pull the Chariot" had this effect on me. I knew that after hearing that track once, I would never forget it, though it did take me some time to memorize the band's name. _Sun Fell_ is the first full length album from Mellonta Tauta and it is a treasure. Although it begins with "Pull the Chariot," the rest of the album covers a lot of different territory. Some parts rock -- sounding like what Cranes or Lush might be if they came from Italy or South America. Some parts are quiet, voice with single guitar. Overall it's upbeat and beautiful and different from anything else in my collection. I *really* like this disc -- on par with the Ars Poetica CD I raved about here last month. And thanks to the fact that I got these through mail-order, I'm not experiencing EWS. The 7th Street Entry is a teeny tiny venue that is connected to the infamous First Avenue (which was, yes indeed, a bus station originally). Get there early for the entry show. One can always loiter in First Ave at first or at the entry. Believe me, it's tiny. ANd very very loud, depending on who the artist is. Hopefully Heather won't be *too* loud. Would be highly cool to see her in that small of venue. If I can swing it, I'll try to be up there for the show, but I don't even know what day of the week it is yet... Probably iffy at best. Okay, here's a silly question for any Tom Waits fans in the audience. This morning I heard Shawn Colvin's version of "Ol' 55" on the radio, and I noticed she sang one line, "I'm on my way home from your place". Now, in Sarah McLachlan's version she sings, "I'm on my way home from the plains". Which is right? I tried all day to get onto lyrics servers to take a look at the original lyrics, but had no luck... can anybody help me out here? For some reason this is really bugging me. Thanks. :) Tangentially related, Holly Cole was interviewed on WFUV this afternoon. I caught the first five minutes -- it was fascinating, but unfortunately I had to get back to work. :P On the extremely outside chance that someone out there in lurkerland taped this (hi, Rita ;), please drop me a line. Oh sure, Chicago gets Moxy Fruvous opening for Holly Cole, but New York gets Ron Sexsmith. :P :P :P That's one of the reasons why I'm not at the Florence Gould Hall right now... and the night Moxy Fruvous performs at the Bottom Line, woj and I will be out of town. Of course. Which brings me to: next weekend, the 24th through the 27th, woj and I will be in Montreal. Are there any Montrealers still lurking out there? Any must-not-miss recommendations for CD stores in town? We'll be staying right near McGill, I think. Also, if anyone knows of anything interesting going on about town that weekend in the music department, please drop us a line. Merci! And now to some midweek replies: woj opined: >nonetheless, it was a lot of fun. the nields keep getting better. i >like all the new songs quite a bit, except for "cowards". adult >alternative radio, here they come. ugh. Well, the Tears For Fears thing you answered yourself -- new album. Adam Ant also came out with a new album recently -- he's getting old, they're showing his videos on VH-1 and they're fitting in nicely. ;> Here's a couple: Limahl (remember Kajagoogoo?) works in a recording studio remixing dance singles, and he's reassumed his real name, Chris Hammill. The other guy from Kajagoo- goo (can't remember his name) teaches seminars on getting into the music business in London. Baltimora died of AIDS last year, and Holly Johnson from Frankie Goes To Hollywood is severely ill with the disease himself. (Who woulda thunk it, I only saw five minutes of eMpTV's "It Came From The 80's" weekend a couple weeks ago, and they were actually useful!) Both of her CDs are utterly out of print now, and neither was released in the U.S. anyway. British ectophiles have been known to keep their eyes open for leftover copies in used bins if asked nicely, though... One last thing -- I had thought that the soundtrack to the movie The Brothers McMullen was supposed to be out yesterday, the 15th. Was I hallucinating again? I checked the local Strawberries today, but nothing (and I couldn't ask the drone behind the counter because over the sound system they were playing Counting Crows 'excruciating butchery of "The Ghost In You" and I couldn't take it any more). I desperately need to hear this new Sarah song... anybody know the scoop? I did notice one thing while I was in Strawberries, though -- on the "i station" thingie they had a huge thing on _The Freedom Sessions_ -- basically a commercial with an option to sample some of the music.
