"to drive the cold winter away" is a lovely album. very sparse and echo-ey. the whole thing was recorded in various churches and other large buildings, which i think produces a nice effect. it certainly brings loreena's voice into the forefront, which is a very worthy thing to have done! :) i don't really think of it as christmas music myself, although the songs are all definitely seasonal winter music (and none of the stuff that assails your ears in department stores or on the radio at christmas, praise be! 8/ ). i just think of it as a beautiful album to listen to at any time of year. quite different from all of her other albums imo, but probably closest to "elemental" in arrangement, style, sparsity, etc. generally, the further back you go with loreena, the more "traditional" her music becomes. on her first album, "elemental", for instance, most of the songs are "traditional arranged by loreena mckennitt" :) she's always put poems to her own music though, too, which i think is lovely. i'd say that tmam is her most "produced" album... sort of a natural progression. *definitely* get the visit when you can... that's still my favourite, though it's hard for me to pick favourites among loreena's albums. take care damon (quite annoyed that the friend who borrowed his copy of "parallel dreams" months ago still hasn't returned it...) _/\_ Damon_Harper@mindlink.bc.ca __\ /__ "Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo, nomad@acca.nmsu.edu \ / doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo." (for those who are wondering, jane's contributions to the song "dream" are fairly non-descript: she provides some indian-style wailing which is recognizably her, but not justification to buy this solely for her presence. siddal - the pedastel (bedazzled): the latest release by this dreamy, etherial band. the music is very epheremal, enveloping and dusky (not quite dark, but certainly not light). it's guitar-based and atmospheric. i hate to use the word "goth," but that seems to be the objective the band is driving at. i need to listen to this more since i haven't formed an opinion on it yet. my scarlet life - reliquaries (one man's floor is another man's ceiling): another one i need to listen to more, but because i like it! my scarlet life is the latest project by preston klik, who used to lead big hat. this is their first cd and it's a limited edition. how to describe the music? ummm. i have no idea. it is a mishmash of styles which seems more relaxed than big hat. certainly more organic. hmmm, i can't really explain my scarlet life. it's very ectophilic though. ;) tsunami - world tour and other destinations (simple machines): a collection of early singles, compilation tracks, demos and other debris by the band who released one of my favorite albums from last year. an intriguing, but large, mass of material. not for the tsunami-virgin, but worthwhile for the veteran. an interesting glipmse into their past - -- they've bared quite a bit which would otherwise be terribly hard to come by. woj ------------------------------ From: geek the boy Date: Tue, 15 Aug 1995 23:33:01 -0400 Subject: Re: Melissa Ferrick (me too :) Damon Harper sez: >i have a radio promo thingy that was discarded from CiTR (UBC radio station), >with just the one track, "happy song", which i quite enjoy. is the rest of >her stuff comparable? well, the stuff on her first album, _massive blur_, is all in the same vein - poppy, guitar-based stuff (not sure where you got the country crossover feeling though). i really didn't like that album when i first picked it up, but later listens (like a year or so later) were more positive (possibly because i finally read the liner notes and noticed some of the names in her studio band). those later listens were inspired by her second album which is quite a bit different. she appears to have wrested control of her musical direction and gone back to her coffeehouse roots (which, i believe, jeff hanson was quite approving of). in the credit-where-credit's-due department, meredith pointed out melissa's change to me repeatedly, but it wasn't until we saw her at maxwell's earlier this year that it finally broke through my brain. and that change of heart has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that she's cute. ;) ;) ;) i'd say buy _willing to wait_ without waiting since it really is a remarkable album. pick up _massive blur_ in a used bin if you see it, but don't buy it for full price. go see her live if you ever get the chance. woj ------------------------------ From: Christopher Boek Date: Wed, 16 Aug 1995 17:24:51 +1000 (EST) Subject: A (shorter) EWT ... If I had to make a comparison, I'd say she sounds a bit like Alanis Morissette crossed with Ani Difranco, with every ounce of the energy and passion which that kind of comparison implies. (Toss in some Bob Mould for good measure; she's a fan and it shows.) Her concerts are spellbinding, but if you can't make it to one, her albums provide a more-than-acceptable surrogate. The consensus seems to be that _Willing to Wait_ is a better album than _Massive Blur_, and I'd have to agree. _Massive Blur_ has some great songs, but it does seem to fall off in the second half, and in general it feels like the work of a singer-songwriter who's still trying to find her voice. The songs on _Willing to Wait_ are wonderful almost without exception; unless somebody puts out a pretty incredible album pretty soon, it's a shoo-in for an appearance in my top three of 1995.
