Oh damn, where'd it go? I'd have to quit mail to run Netscape, and I don't want to, so I'm guessing it's http://www.pollstar.com It contains a wealth of tour information, and is searchable by artist, venue and city. Since I've been doing a fair amount of traveling, this looks great to me. You can specify a city and a time range. I put in San Francisco, and was given a choice of the city and a lot of neighboring areas. There are also a bunch of good music resource links in their hotlist pages. Since some people were asking on the Jewel list, here's what it showed for her tour: 08/09/95 No. Tonawanda (NY) Riviera Theatre 08/10/95 Toronto (ONT) Phoenix Theatre 08/12/95 Cincinnati (OH) Bogart's 08/13/95 Chicago (IL) Vic Theatre 08/14/95 Pontiac (MI) Industry 08/15/95 Indianapolis (IN) Vogue 08/16/95 Milwaukee (WI) Rave Neal ------------------------------ From: mklprc@teleport.com (Michael Pearce) Date: Wed, 9 Aug 1995 23:37:08 -0700 Subject: Bored of the Rings "Matt Bittner" writes, > Wow. You already know most of the major characters through osmosis (growing up around people who have read/written about it, etc.) and you will laugh hysterically. It will give you the general structure of the story, and even make it easier to appreciate the original when you do get around to it. Try also to see the three animated Ring movies/TV movies. Ralph Bakshi did one of them and (someone else) did the other two. One theatrical, two TV-movies. I liked them all, but was a minority at the time; most of my friends hated the TV movies I couldn't finish the Ring books themselves (before all this stuff) and never got around to reading them after, either. But the Lampoon thing gave me appreciation of the original that had been lost on me at first. The actual writers, Henry Beard and Doug Kenney, were at Harvard at the time. It was published by _Harvard_ Lampoon, not NatLamp. The class of '69 contained most of the founding members of National Lampoon, many of whom went on to do NatLamp theatrical recordings (Radio Dinner; Lemmings) and then the original Saturday Night Live. Around the inner surface of the Ring was inscribed this poem: "This Ring, no other, is made by the elves, Who'd pawn their own mother to grab it themselves. Ruler of creeper, mortal and scallop, This is a sleeper that packs quite a whallop, The Power almighty rests in this Lone Ring. The Power, alrighty, for doing your Own Thing. If broken or busted, it cannot be remade, If found, send to Sorhead (the postage is prepaid)." As you may guess, I have it right here in front of me. 11th printing, sometime after 1969. /^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\ | Please don't add "*@aol.com" to your twit filter. Dead First off, apologies to all for that *ugh* post yesterday (RedGtrGirl strikes again!) I really was having a bad day. I will post something relevant today... WRT Dune - I had no idea it was David Lynch's baby - I somehow thought it was Dino DeLaurentis who was the same person responsible for that delightful piece of fluff known as "Flash Gordon" (I jist looooove that sountrack by Queen!). An old boyfriend of mine was so heavy into Dune that he had a sound-sample on his Windows log-in that consisted of the mantra "it is by the will of ..... that I set my mind in motion..." or something like that. I haven't seen the movie in YEARS but all this talk makes me want to go out and rent it. I never did make it through the books - but then again, I was trying to read them when I was in high school. I didn't have much of an attention span back then :-) * * * * * * * * * * Food for thought wrt Jerry Garcia. I don't wish to speak ill of the "dead" no pun intended... but I never was much of a fan of the Grateful Dead. I'm not heartbroken over his passing - just sad that another musician bit the dust after years of abusing his body. The man was a 53 year old icon for heavy drug use and slack lifestyle. I get so frustrated seeing these young kids whose parents weren't even dating when the Dead started out - heavy into the music AND the "shroomin" and "smokin". Perhaps they were a good band with innovative style and brilliant marketing - they are just not my cup of tea. What gets me is how the little "sheep" flocked to the "Deadhead" lifestyle. I guess we will see the "Jerry Garcia Memorial Rehab Clinic for Recovering Deadheads" before long. Time to clean-up and get a job boys & girls. I'm sure being the eclectic bunch that we are we've all been tempted to or have tried various psychadelic image enhancing substances. However, my fault is with those who build their lives around this kind of stuff. I once witnessed these two guys arguing over who was a better guitar player, Brian May (of Queen) or Jerry Garcia. Obviously this was a useless "opinion" fight - Steve (the Garcia Fan) could not defend his point, just that the Dead were an awesome band (as he dashes back to his bedroom to harvest the "greenery" growing in his closet. Brian (the Brian May fan) said "how can you say that?.... they play the same songs, the same shows every single year - it's just the trips that are different" Since I cannot draw ascii art worth a darn - picture one of those universal "no" symbols (the circle with a slash through it) and those stupid little dancing bears with the peace signs in the middle. No more deadheads, please. May Jerry rest in peace with Janis and Jimi - just watch out for Zappa :-) (now THERE's someone I miss!) Of course it was a sad day yesterday for Deadheads with Jerry Garcia's passing. A true legend. I saw them in Madison, WI. back around 1980, I believe. Great show if you could see them thru the pot and hash smoke! ;-) Rather ironically, I picked up a copy of the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel yesterday noon and the entertainment section ran a story on the Dead and the Beach Boys. Strange combination, I know. The article listed all these strange parallels between the 2 bands during their thirty years of performing. Obviously the paper went to press before the sad news about Jerry came out.
