Yeah. It was rather sudden... I know a number of folks who just saw him at DemiCon down there in Iowa a few months ago. No one was aware that he was ill. I believe he died from kidney failure, resulting from a long battle he'd been having (unbeknownst to anyone) with cancer. Gads, I'm hoping I'm getting that right, it's been awhile... It was about a month ago, I think. He was only 59, if I remember right. :( I'd met him at World Fantasy Con in Minneapolis in 1993... shared an elevator with him. Terribly nice man. He read some really funny/good poetry at the 'con as well. And, then there are his books... the Amber ones, particularly the early ones. I know a few folks named Corwin, after the character... I saw this terrific movie this weekend: "The Secret of Roan Inish" which I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned yet.. (unless you did and I missed it - which is entirely possible). It is set in Ireland during the late 1940's and somewhat based on the old myth about Selkies, these creatures that are half-human half-seal. I will not give too much of the story away but it is mostly about this little girl whose mother dies, her poor working-class father and older brothers can no longer care for her, so they send her away to live with her grandparents in the country. Grandpa starts telling Fiona (the little girl) stories about the old days on Roan Inish, this beautiful island, when they would live a simple life, but were so very happy... i will not go into the complete story here because to tell it would give "the secret" away... It is beautifully filmed, the girl is one of the best "kids" I've seen in films since the old black&white film "Curse of the Cat People". There's this bit of dialogue in Roan Inish where Fiona is on a boat with her grandfather and teenaged cousin, and they are rowing out to the island. She spots a seal she's convinced has been following her, and stared at her when she first arrived at the grandparent's house.. Fiona: "...his name's Jacks" (referencing the little seal) Grandpa "..how do you know that?" Fiona: "it just is.. that's all" too cute.... I spent 2 hours in air conditioned comfort, swept away to another world.. Quite delicious indeed. AND... the soundtrack is wonderful as well (Celtic music of course!) ------------------------------------------------------------- More proof that "everyone's a Celt.." some of my ancestors come from a place in eastern Europe called Galicia, it is in Poland bordered by Austria and Hungary. Damon warned me that I was going to be spending a lot of money within a week of reading this list, and I said "Oh, no, not ME" and then found myself and my sweetie at the cd store Saturday night with Loreena McKennitt's "The Mask and Mirror" in my hands. As the clerk's ringing us up I say, "Oh, and can I order Ani Difranco's latest as well?" which turned out to be in the new releases section. Along with Todd's cd the whole bill came to over $50 (which is a lot for me to spend all at once on music) but wow -- well worth it! (disposable and otherwise.) but we love it. :) PDQ Bach... wow, there's a name i dimly remember. a friend played some PDQ Bach for me almost... uhhh... 10 years ago. (veronica shows her age.) i guess you can count me a fan too, even if i didn't get many of the jokes or run out and buy the albums. (part of why i love ecto is that anytime someone mentions some cool old media thing that you'd think would be obscure about 4 zillion people who love it too pop up and carry on really interesting discussions about it. i know it's not obscure, but have we had a Rocky & Bullwinkle thread yet?) well i did get to see Sarah and the Chieftans, once in Boston and once in DC. will a scarcely adorned WOW! suffice? what else can i say? hmmm. Sarah was awesome, the Chieftans were the bomb, and i avoided Ron Sexsmith both times so i wouldn't know about him. ;) the sound in boston was a little uneven, at least during Sarah, but at Merriweather it was right on, probably about as good as it gets there. Sarah was *wonderful* on "The Foggy Dew" - i'd never heard this song before but it is *beautiful*, my favorite of the evening, by itself almost worth the price of admission. maybe it's just because it was new to me, or perhaps because Sarah sounded more Irish than she usually does (which i love), but it's a great song no matter what. oddly, it first seemed like that song was a little too fast for Sarah's voice, which sounds so beautiful when it lingers on a note, but the next night i'd have sworn the song was slower. did someone read my mind and change it, or am i just imagining things? *right* after the boston show it *poured* rain; Christine and i got *soaked* but that's ok; love is wet and squishy sometimes. :) i really enjoyed the Chieftans too, even though i'd never heard them before the show. to me it's the kind of music that makes you feel like you're in a pub working on a pint of Guiness. (sp?) and all the special guests like Ashley MacIsaacs were wonderful, and, and, and they had a tape of Shelia Chandra on between sets. gosh darnit, what else could you want?!?! go see it!! :) and maybe i'll get into trouble for this topic, but: when my friend Bev and i were leaving the show we were swimming through that crowd of beautiful people when Bev observed, "Sarah's a dyke magnet!" which is exactly what i had been thinking. So leaving aside the long-dead question "Is Sarah a lesbian?", can we ask "Are Sarah's *audiences* gay?" and yes, i know, it doesn't really matter, but it does make me wonder. which is not yet a crime. right? ;) top 40 or not top 40? my art-school friends would probably have said, broadly, that top-40 music is "decoration" and ecto-music is "art". (whoops, almost spelt ecru-music, which is a whole nother off color topic.) now, if i could only concisely explain the difference between "decoration" and "art"... hm, maybe i can. some music (i.e. Tori) *demands* my total attention - i can't have it on in the background, i have to either pay full attention or turn it off. some music (i.e. Moodswings) goes into the background really easily. i'd say the former is more like "art", something that's in the foreground of your attention, and the latter is like "decoration", something that fits comfortably in the background of your attention, and keeps your walls from being blank. er, quiet. and certainly much music is in-between, on one hand background-able, but also able to reward focused attention. erk, what am i trying to say here? mmm. not sure. someone (sorry i can't find who) mentioned that Brian Froud and Monty Python-esque humor made a surprising combination... go see "Labyrinth", an imho *wonderful* movie which features, amongst other things, the art of Brian Froud and little snippets of Python humor, at least if memory serves. it also features David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly (swoon!). it's a "kid's movie" that adults can enjoy too... "The Bog of Eternal Stench" hee hee hee... :) and speaking of Jennifer Connelly, i saw "Some Girls" for like the 200th time last week, and for the *first* time i noticed that it has Julia Fordham's "Comfort of Strangers" in there! (at least that's what the radio announcer said; i don't know her work at all.) ok, you've all been more than patient. class dismissed! :) smiles & whirling hugs, veronica in love ------------------------------ From: Kate_Tabasko@transarc.com Date: Mon, 31 Jul 1995 17:58:48 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Spanish Celts and BiL Greetings!
