"under construction" sounds awfully like what we were hearing in the Hartford, CT area a few months ago..."We're building a new station....right before your very ears". Until they got DJs etc., they must've been automated. Mainstream altertnative as well... I can find out who owns the station, but I suspect it's the same company as that which owns "Planet". Neither am I overly impressed, despite the claims at being "The Modern Rock Revolution".[Ed. note: The broadcasting co. in question is Liberty Broadcasting...] >I imagine she is beholden to ASCAP or BMI or CESAC because this would be >the only real way she could collect royalties. If not, netscape over to his WWW page (try a YAHOO search, or email me for the URL). If you're going to, do it soon, as he's scheduled to be executed on August 17. It's the sorta story that'll get most Ectophiles incensed (i.e., he's almost certainly not guilty and, regardless, did not receive a fair trial). I won't take any more bandwidth with it, as most of youse guys have probably already heard about him, with me (as usual) only learning about this situation a coupla weeks ago. Brrrrr. :) Yesterday was a good day to invest in a pair of very warm gloves, I decided. It was extremely brass monkey weather. I figured that now, while I'm sitting here waiting for little files to finish moving themselves back and forth, would be a good time to mention some of the stuff I've picked up lately... dont expect really intricate reviews, though :) Nan Vernon, Manta Ray Mae Moore, Dragonfly these two my housemate picked up for me while he was in the US - the Nan Vernon one has been spending quite a bit of time in the CD player, but the Mae Moore one really hasnt grabbed me yet. I liked Bohemia, just something isnt there in this one. Hector Zazou, Sahara Blue if you havent had a listen to this one, or his more recent 'Songs from the Cold Seas' might I strongly suggest you do. They are wonderful - with a interesting and varied mix of vocalists on both of them. Jewel, Pieces of You wow. this cd certainly deserves the raves it's been getting on ecto. when I first chucked it on the cd player at home I had my housemates asking 'so when did Tori start playing the guitar?' - on a first listen they're very similar voices... Heather Nova, Oyster. One of the CD stores here has an enormous number of this cd sitting out in the 'on sale' section. Hey, what a bummer, means I get to pick it up for a few bucks less. What a pity. :) This is another one thats been sitting in the CD player a lot. Not as much as Jewel, but a lot. Kermit, unpigged. I had to buy this - I'm a Muppet maniac, so any new Muppet stuff goes instantly onto my shopping list. This one was worth it, if only for the version of 'Wild Thing' with Kermit, Floyd, and Animal ("PLUG IN! PLUG IN!") I also have the Jill Sobule self-titled CD, but I'd like to listen to it more before making a judgement on it. I'm not sure about it at the moment. I'm also finding the Max Sharam disc appearing in the CD player a lot of late. Oh, keep an eye out for something called "Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book" - its a wonderfully warped book. Text by Terry Jones, beautifully illustrated by Brian Froud (whos work inspired much of the movie 'The Dark Crystal'). Its a book kept by a small girl at the turn of the century, who found that if she sat still, with an open book in her lap, inquisitive little fairies would flitter over and land on the book, so you could then go *SNAP* and catch them between the pages. :) Anthony (Sarah's touring downunder! yaaaaaaaay :) ------------------------------ From: RedGtrGirl@aol.com Date: Tue, 11 Jul 1995 13:36:17 -0400 Subject: Ugh! My interest was piqued, in particular, by her statement that she thinks of music in terms of colors. Laura Nyro used to drive studio musicians batty with her calls for "blue" or "orange" music. When asked what the nexus was between music and color, Jewel said that music evokes emotion, which she associated with color. What remains inexplicable is the nexus between emotion and color :-). I'm a lurker of the ecto-digest list and saw your note with the not-so-great review of Alanis's album Jagged Little Pill. Well...I must disagree!! I think maybe it has to do with gender (not to be sexist, of course). Too often we women have to deal with the dribble "Oh, I love you/can't live without you" stuff too many artists are performing. It's refreshing to hear a strong, independent woman screaming her thoughts. Of course, Tori, Happy, Paula, and Sarah are along the same venue--they're all fighting to be strong and encourage other women to be strong. I think Alanis's lyrics are strong and interesting. I love _Ironic_ and _Not the Doctor_, the latter, again, being a statement for independence and strength. _Perfect_ is a wonderful commentary on what we expect from others, but particularly what parents want from their children but don't expect from themselves. All in all, very rarely have I encountered an album that moved me upon the first listen as strongly as this one has. I would recommend another listen to while reading the lyrics...might make a difference? Of course, to each his/her own. I find that what many are recommending is not what I enjoy. I've given a few of the artists listed a listen to and don't find anything overwhelmingly interesting. Then again, I am totally in LOVE with Happy and the others I've listed above. Diversity is what makes the world go around, no? Anyway...I've written this privately only because I know the "write to" address is different from the one we receive our mail from and I'm not sure what that address is. You're more than welcome to forward to the list. I have enjoyed reading the comments from others and seeing what's going on in the music world, specifically the ecto world. I agree with someone who said that we West Coast ectophiles need to get Happy out here for a concert!!! Anyway...thanks for bearing with me.
