I wanted to mention the Nields again. I saw them for the second time at the Birchmere at the end of June, and they again put on an inspired and wildly entertaining show. On stage they make for a curious sight, as the guitar player looks like the spitting image of Tom Hanks evil brother, sporting the latest in Michael Stipe hairless hair cuts. The goateed, bandanad drummer was straight from any number of Seattle bands, while the long sideburns on the bass player left me reminded of some punk/rockabilly style band. Then you've got Nerissa Nields, who definitely looks like a 60's throwback, with her straight blonde hair, bangs in the eyes, and that sweet, slightly distant look in her face. Center stage is the statuesque mistress of the grand gesture, Katryna Nields. (I recall being really pissed when the San Diego Reader called Aimee Mann reptilian looking, but something about Katryna looks, well, reptilian to me. But in a good way, I'm sure.) Despite the incongruous looking band, the Nields play a clever, funny electric folk rock. There shows are full of manic energy, pretty harmonies and witty wordplay. Their albums only partially capture the fun of the live shows, which mix plenty of banter with inspired covers and lively versions of their songs. Nothing could match the dead on version of Dolly Parton's Me and Little Andy from the last show, but Lovely Rita Meter Maid and Buffalo Springfield's What's Going On were fun, as was the hilarious I Hate MCI (because they make me realize I have no family or friends). I highly recommend seeing them if they stop in your town, which they probably are doing within the next few months if you live in CT, MA, PA, NY, NC, Manitoba, New Brunswick, ME, NJ, or CO. I was too lazy to type in all the info, but if anyone wants specific city dates, let me know. Or try the worlds longest URL for the Nields Web Page... http://uhavax.hartford.edu/disk$userdata/group/acm/www/nields/nwfeedba.html It's a pretty funky site with full tour info (not amenable for copying without much editing though) and lyrics to all the songs available on disc. Could it have been that the album was promoted in the wrong way, as just one of those albums by a female singer about male/ female relationships? For example, the first song "Fall Down" could easily be misinterpreted in that way. This song is actually about how you sometimes have to "fall down" in your quest for spiritual growth, or else people around you would appear to you as dummies, and you'd just be a "lonely god" in a universe where you've created everything yourself. There would be no more surprises. The line "don't forget to leave your friends a forwarding address" means that you should not forget to speak the language of your old friends. Spiritual insights sometimes can be expressed in a way that is hard to understand for people who haven't experienced something like that. And "don't forget to pack your bags the way your mother told you" means that you should not forget the simple things it takes to live in the physical world. Sometimes you just have to tell your old friends what you've learned, so they can "catch up" with you. Then you can move on. It just goes on and on like that, you know? Nick Hill (hi, Nick -- didn't see you there last night!) had her on his show recently and ordered woj and I to tune in. I wasn't overly impressed with her performance that evening, but last night, she was incredible! woj commented that her singing style and music were a lot like Mary Margaret O'Hara, and on top of that I think the quality of her voice was reminiscent of Toni Childs. She played acoustic guitar, and was accompanied by someone who played piano and electric bass. On stage she is positively loopy, and more than a little spastic -- but I saw her with her friends later on during the IM set and she seemed quite normal. I bought her new CD, _Into The Natural_, but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. It's a totally independent release, and she mentioned that it will be available at Tower in a couple of weeks, but I'm not sure if that meant the entire chain or just the ones in New York. Even when I don't play along it all seems nice enough. Perhaps not my favorite music, but it doesn't grate me or anything. If it did grate me I'd rather be cheese. But if the music's cheesy it can't grate me, because that would be a paradox and all sorts of things would start to go wrong, like humans would become magnetically attached to furniture or something. I think I saw that in "Millenium", which by the way seemed to take that long to watch. Deja vu. But I digress. Steven has returned from his meditation weekend at the Tibetan Buddhist Learning Center, my little neice has returned to North Carolina, all is normal again, and perhaps I can cut through this backlog of ecto/on-reflection/telecine listmail over the next few days. Awesome lyrics, loud melodic guitars and great singing (although the vocals are a bit lower in the mix than I would like them to be, but that could be due to me not being able to figure out my stereo :)). 'Fallen Angel' and its loud counterpart 'I'm the ocean' now rank as two of my favourite songs of all time. While I'm at it, I also have to say that 'Foo Fighters' is also a great album. The only ectophilic music I bought recently has to be the Hector Zazou album (which I found in a bargain bin for $4), and I must admit that the Suzanne vega/John Cale song there is brilliant. What's the story on new Suzanne Vega? I think I am beginning to wear out my 99.9F CD... Finally, the Newport Folk Festival is coming up in a month, with an awesome lineup. I think that Day 2 (with Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls, Joan Baez et al.) will be the day that I will attend (assuming I don't have to be at work). If there is any interest I will post the complete lineup and the ticket info (I know that it's $30/day and that the $32 festival passes are sold out). On the beginnig of Eric Clapton's "Let It Grow" there is a distinct breath right before he starts singing. It could have easily been edited out, but he chose to leave it in. The Bangles also used to leave the breaths in, to great effect. As far as the sound of fingers moving on strings, it makes the music so much more "live" and it really increases the presence to hear fingers on strings. This is really evident on some of the songs on Mary_Chapin Carpenter's album "Come On Come On". On some of the old Cat Stevens records you can hear as each fingernail plucks a string. Even random voices, like those on Tom Petty's "Damn The Torpedoes" add to the whole effect. I think it's the job of the producer to make a recording sound "full" and not just like an acoustic demo and these are the sort of things that do that. Just my thoughts on the subject... C ya, Joel. "We decided to cross the alien DNA with that of a woman because we thought a woman would be more docile and controllable"-Xavier Fitch(played by Ben Kingsley) "I guess you don't get out much."-Press Maddox(played by Michael Madsen) Just some dialogue from the movie "Species"-quite a wild ride.
