Marvin Camras, who has been at the head of our master birthday list for some time, died a couple of weekends ago at the age of 79. He was a professor of electrical engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology, and often referred to as the "father of modern magnetic recording." Much of what we on this list do is thus dependent on his inventions. Happy's Liquor has abruptly been effaced from the next block over from my place. Sunday, the building which had previously sported the imprimatur prominently over the facade was suddenly a uniform shade of greenish gray, with only the illuminated sign over the corner entrance touting "Sam's Food and Liquor" breaking the visual monotony. At least it still gives the impression that some of the wares inside are blue and fuzzy, though for that reason I'd be reluctant to buy any of them :-). Say I saw Jewel's rerun on Conan the other night. It apparently isn't the one where her cracked guitar is a conversation piece. Such confusion apparently comes easy at my age. WRT last week's teapot tempest over whether the digest was automatically compiled, or automatically generated, made me wonder if an automatically compiled digest would then have to be automatically linkedited and automatically executed before we could get any output from it that was usable :-). I'm especially pleased that Amy is doing an original piece for the HBP. I look forward to hearing the fruits of her labors. But no more so than I look forward to hearing the contributions from all the rest of you. We're talking a finite time frame here, so get yours in the mail to Doug real soon so that we can present Happy with a 30th Birthday tape that will have her quoting the late Charles Crumb, "How perfectly goddamned delightful it all is, to be sure." We don't want to hear from the same people for tape after tape--well, actually we do, but not only from them :-). We want to keep the music coming from those who have contributed in the past, and also broaden the base to include those who haven't done so before. As I've stated in these pages on several previous occasions, the methodology for participating in all this consists of dubbing either a canned or a live musical selection or two or N, ideally preceded by spoken words of introduction from you, onto a cassette (c-100 recommended), and snailmailing it to Doug. If you're not equipped to record your own voice on tape, you can email (or snailmail) a text to me, which I will then read verbatim onto the tape. The only ground rules are that your total contribution for the main part of the tape can't exceed ten minutes (you can submit as much "Filler" music as you want, which may or may not get used to fill tape that would otherwise lie fallow), and that you can't submit material from Happy's own discography. I want to reemphasize the importance of submitting intros--whether they be uttered by you or by me in the end--for your music; in the past, all too many selections have ended up going unintroduced on the finished product. Tapes with your contributed music should be snailmailed to: Doug Burks, 2223 NW 59th St., Apt. 2, Seattle, WA 98107, USA Prepared intros for me to record should be sent to me at any of the following: EMAIL #1: Mitch.Pravatiner@launchpad.unc.edu EMAIL #2: mapravat@prairienet.org SNAILMAIL: Mitch Pravatiner, 8025 S.
