I agree entirely. I've seen several people around here apologizing for talking about music that's "not ectophilic" or "not ectofodder" lately, and that bugs me, too. The fact that we mostly discuss music made by women and/ or with female vocals just sort of happened -- it wasn't by design. No one decreed that "ectophilic music" would fit some specific narrow criteria. The recent discussion of Yes is a prime example: nobody jumped up screaming "hey, you can't talk about them here!" That's what makes ecto ecto -- the broadest of latitudes to discuss music (or books or movies or whatever) without people getting all anal about topic drift. I'm not saying that if someone tried to start a thread about Boyz 2 Men or Mariah Carey here there would be much interest in continuing it :), but I'd like to think that people here don't feel like they have to censor themselves as to the content of their musical discussion. >pamela means is a nifty guitarist and a nifty singer too. she's one of >those solo acoustics that don't get the official woj frown of boredom. She even had us all introduce ourselves, since she felt like she was giving a performance in her basement anyway. :) I'd say that if you like Ani DiFranco, you'll like her -- she has a similar sounding voice, and does really neat things on the guitar too, though she doesn't fool around with tunings as much as Ani does. >she has a three song cassette out so far, only available when she plays >out. if you get a chance, check her out. if you don't like her, i'll >refund the cover charge. ;) Add to that her new 8-song cassette release, "Bone Spurs", which contains two of the songs from the previous cassette. That would be _Goldfish Don't Talk Back_, which I liked a lot better than _Epiphany In Brooklyn_ -- it's rawer, the epitome of the "anti-folk" move- ment in which Brenda Kahn is often listed as a major force. We have a copy of _Destination Anywhere_, and it's a completely new direction for her -- she's got a band, and it sounds more like Liz Phair than anything else. This is a spinoff of Toronto's The Pursuit Of Happiness, with ex-TPOH background vocalist Leslie Stanwick doing lead vocs, and ex-TPOH bass player Johnny sinclair playing...bass. You probably noticed there's also a drummer, and a guitar player who trades leads with Leslie, who also plays. They have a CD released independently in Canada called Magic Basement, that has actually done quite well, with 3 tracks receiving national radio play and at least one video that made regular rotation on MuchMusic. The songs are pop/rock for the most part, very melodic, fluffy and hooky with lots of overdubbed harmony. The overdubs along with some other production tricks on the CD don't translate well to a live show, but they're all talented musicians and fun to watch just the same. > Mae Moore was > a lot better than I thought she'd be -- her voice was a lot more > powerful than on her albums. More hooky pop music with lots of catchy vocal harmony, and no upfront lead guitars to speak of. A bit too swell for me to take more than a song at a time from them, but they have a good following in Canada. I won't announce this on Lovehounds/r.m.g though, since we don't have the space for even more guests and we'll be enough Kate fans anyway. Please let us know who else would like to come. Since this is on a Sunday and several folks have to work the next morning, this party will start early. In fact it won't have fixed starting and ending times. You can come and go as is most convenient for your means of travel. We hope to have a couple of hours where everybody will be there. Our parties are very informal and have no program whatsoever. Usually we eat and drink a lot, listen to lots of music, watch (and copy) videos, show pictures, and TALK. For those of you who are fans of the band(s) Queen and/or Marillion (talk about opposites!) I heard a few interesting factoids this weekend.... A friend of mine was chatting with Cozy Powell (who has played with everyone from Keith Emerson to Black Sabbath.... and recently was in Brian May's band...). The charming Mr. Powell told my friend Bob that Brian May is working on putting together another Queen project.. yes.. you read correctly.... I guess Freddie recorded a shitload of vocal stuff when he realized that his time on this plane of existence was going to be limited (damn... I miss him! I really do....) So... Brian is working on putting music/finished product behind the vocal material that Freddie recorded before his passing. Should prove to be very interesting.... (I hope it makes it to actual release!) Second.... long ago in a galaxy far far away there was this pretty darn good progressive rock band called Marillion....;-) After their last album stiffed (called "Brave" oddly enough..) their entire domestic catalog was deleted - which sucks because I put off buying the stuff I've got on vinyl... on cd...because I thought they would always be there... (ack!) ANYWAY... Above mentioned friend said that while in a record (oops.. i mean CD) store the other day he saw their new CD in the preview booth. Something about Canibal Surf Cheerleaders... or some crap like that.... I dunno... but he also said that they are going to be going on tour, and have booked a show in Columbus (Ohio) so... who knows... It did seem odd to me that a band that declined so sharply in such a short time, and could not afford to tour 2 years ago due to poor sales.. is now going on tour? (huh?) ============================================================ OH WELL!!! On a more relevant note.... I heard Innocence Mission's "Bright as Yellow" on the local "alternacrap" radio station the other day... was so swept away by it that I swallowed hard and ran out to buy the CD (I'm trying to save up for my vacation...) "Glow" is truly mezmirizing, beautiful, wonderful! I've been recommending to all my friends who are into "girl" singers - that and the Suddely Tammy! discs... (hey MJM.... what about that CD?... ;-) ) WRT Aimee Mann... I understand her new CD is coming out SOON (we hope.) Another friend told me that "Whatever" is now being distributed through Reprise (is this correct?) and that her new album "I'm With Stupid" will be released through Reprise as well.... anyone know if this is the case? I spent this weekend working on my contribution to the Birthday Project... and.... played guitar so much that my callouses have callouses (o u c h...) Spent last night comforting my paranoid tabbies while the neighborhood set off their explosives and pyrotechnics... most annoying..!
