Now that I've had a chance to listen to it a few times I'd like to share my thoughts. For those who don't follow Bjork, she is the former singer of the Icelandic band the Sugarcubes. Her first solo album _Debut_ came out in 1993 (yes, she did a jazz album before that but I think Debut was her first solo pop album). Most people seemed to either love or hate _Debut_, with it's deceptively simple Casiotone-plus-beatbox style of dance pop. I definitely loved it. _Debut_ has great melodies, Bjork's strong, distinctive voice and a fresh, magical quality. So is _Post_ a worthy successor to _Debut_? Sort of. The album isn't much of an artistic variation from _Debut_. There are fewer dance beats (and no disco like "Violently Happy") and it's a bit noisier, but if you liked the style of _Debut_ you will probably like _Post_. The album starts strongly with the industrialized single "Army of Me" and moves to my favorite song "Hyper-ballad" (an ocean suicide fantasy in the vein of "Anchor Song" from _Debut_). In general the first half of the album is stronger than the second; the big band number "Its Oh So Quiet" is a blast. I've tried switching the order of the songs and I still find little that interests me in the latter part of _Post_. The bottom line: If you liked _Debut_, get _Post_. If you've never heard either one, listen to _Debut_ first. cheers, - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ David R. (In America anyway...I don't know the Canadian schedule) The 2-part Due South "Chicago Holiday" with Holly Cole is being repeated! In Chicago it'll be on CBS this and next Friday night at 8pm (Central time). Check your local listings. For those going "huh?" I'll explain. First, Due South is a wonderful (IMHO) Canadian tv show. A simple plot breakdown (polite Mountie with a lip-reading deaf wolf is assigned to the Chicago Canadian embassy and teams up with a cynical, smart-mouthed Chicago cop) is likely to evoke much eye-rolling and "give me a break"s but trust me, it's worthwhile. It's clever, witty, intelligent, well-written, well-acted, well-directed and deserves a wider audience. It's quite popular in Canada and has been picked up for a 2nd season there, but has been dropped from the fall line-up in the US. CBS is running it on Fridays (it used to be on Thursdays) just to fill time and without any promotion. Hopefully it might somehow gather a 2nd audience and if it does, CBS might pick it up as a mid-season replacement. Anyway, about Holly... The folks who put Due South together have *great* taste in music and they've played Sarah McLachlan, Loreena McKennitt, Single Gun Theory and Figgy Duff, among others. Not only is Holly's music featured in *both* parts of "Chicago Holiday" but Holly herself is seen singing in both shows. I'm excited because I missed part 1 the first time it aired. I did see the 2nd part and it was wonderful so I'm looking forward to finally seeing the whole thing. In part 2, Holly is heard and seen twice. I know for sure that she's heard and seen in the first part too, but I don't know how many times. I think I remember hearing that she sang a non-album song in part 1. Please pardon me if I start gushing. :) After making the long trek down to NYC I got to Sin-e about and hour and a half before Suddenly, Tammy! was scheduled to go on. There were no empty tables, so when woj and Meredith showed up a short time later we stood outside while the first act, Sarah Nagourney (sp?), performed. She was pretty good, and I was informed by Meredith that her guitarist had played with Suzanne Vega. Once her set was done we were lucky enough to get the table that Sarah's friends had been sitting at. Sin-e is just a small storefront with no stage, and once it was filled I would say there were about 70 or so people inside. I was really excited at the prospect of seeing Suddenly, Tammy! in such an intimate venue. They were very good when they opened for The Wolfgang Press in May, so I was pretty sure we were in for a treat. I didn't know the half of it. :) The next act was... errr... I've forgotten his first name, but his last name was Boone. Tom Boone maybe? He played acoustic guitar and sang, and he was pretty good. He also took the time to compliment me on my Suddenly, Tammy! t-shirt. :) Then Beth, Ken, and Jay showed up. Once the equipment was set up by the band (Jay and Ken are the roadies, and Ken informed us that Beth's piano is heavier than it looks) we were sitting just a little behind and to the right of Beth, close enough so we could lean forward and play a few keys on the upper end of her piano. We took advantage of our great seats to exchange a little meaningless banter with Ken and Beth before they started playing. :) Suddenly, Tammy! played for about an hour and 15 minutes, and they were truly awesome. The band was *really* having fun, and the fans were really into the show. Here's a song list... which is like a set list except for the fact that they're not in the right order. :) I remember that "Not That Dumb" was the first song, and that they played "The Big Guys Are Coming" next, but beyond that I'm pretty much lost. Anyway: Stacey's Trip [by audience request] Plant Me No Respect Girl Can't Decide Lamp Peanuts song [my name for it... it was the song that Schroeder and the rest of the Peanuts gang play when they're supposed to be rehearsing for the Christmas pageant] Carol King song [you know... "I feel the earth move under my feet..."] Hard Lesson The Big Guys Are Coming Mark Of Man Flemen Not That Dumb Funky [I say they played it, woj says they didn't] River, Run Beautiful Dream encore: Ethan [? I didn't know this one, but that's what they called it] Mount Rushmore There were many amusing things about the show, like the fact that the set list (which actually only included about half of the songs they played) was placed where Beth couldn't see it, so Ken and Jay would sometimes just start songs and let Beth join in. There was the way the path to the bathroom passed so close to Ken that people almost got hit in the head by the end of his bass (he warned people to be careful... I think he would have been better off making an example out of someone). There was the photo Beth had taped to her piano... when I leaned forward to look at it she told me that it was a Polariod of her, and after showing it to a friend of her's who was sitting next to me she wondered aloud why she had taped it there in the first place. There was Ken complimenting me on my Suddenly, Tammy! t-shirt. ;) So a good time was had by all, and despite the fact we were in NYC there was only one apparent record company squid there (an older man wearing a bow tie). Of course that squid did snatch Beth away after the show, so he could tell her about how Suddenly, Tammy! was coming in "under the radar" (as overheard by Meredith). Bleah! According to Meredith Beth just looked at the squid with a fake smile on her face. :) Anyway, if Suddenly, Tammy! comes to your town GO AND SEE THEM! On the off chance that anyone's been trying to get in contact with me -- here I am!) Cincinnati local band Plow On Boy have just released their first recording, a short (23:24) EP entitled "Broken". I saw POB opening for Frente a while back, and that (unlike Milla opening for Crash Test Dumies) was a good choice. With an eclectic range of musical influences and a female lead with a very beautiful voice, it is most definitely ectofodder, and is highly recommended. The band was very shy live (they said the name of their band three or four times, and I never could understand it -- someone standing next to me who knew them finally told me who they were); the CD sounds a little more polished, but not too much. Looking at the CD, I cannot tell the name of the record company... if any. The best identifying mark on it is "Made in Canada". There's an address to write to, if anyone's interested. On the back of the CD, under the copyright notice is the enscription: "Unauthorized duplication sucks". :-) Went on a CD buying jag this weekend, after becoming terribly burnt out on my last (six-month-stretching) jag of computer-game buying (when you have fully 30 CD-ROM games, most of which you haven't even barely STARTED, it's definitely time to stop! -- and this is after I sold some!), and ended up with this, Pink Floyd's new live _Pulse_, Bjork's _Post_ (which is wonderful), You Am I's _Sound As Ever_ (not really ecto material, but good nonetheless), Fugazi's _Red Medecine_ (yes!), and Frank Black's _Teenager of the Year_ (mostly because I have seen the video for "Headache" three times on a local public-access video show, and *cannot get the song out of my head*! Argh!). One could of course say Siberry is self-indulgent and argue her music isn't universal enough on that album, thus leading some to not readily understand it, so it's ok to wish it were easier to hit you. It took me a while before I began liking that album (The Speckless Sky) too. I think I went on my tirade because of a Canadian woman on another list with me who went off (in well-mannered flames, women are better about that than some of the male flamers I've had) on me about how she felt Sinead was a "superior vocalist and writer" to Siberry. I was thinking neither was "superior" to the other and that perhaps she felt that way because she assumed bombastic rock (re: the older sinead) is "better." I told her both were spiritual writers and singers, but disagreed on Sinead's evident "superiority." It amazed me that the Canadian woman, who told me she knew few people into Siberry, dismissed sib so lightly, as it made me wonder about Canadians. Anyway, so maybe I had a hangover from that email exchange when I was reacting to poor Kevin. I do find that Siberry's lyrics are getting more into the heart of everyday life feelings and experiences in the more recent cds...tho i think she thought that's what she was doing on TSS too... They run what's called a Progressive/AAA format, that sounds different than anything I've heard before. I'd say at least half the playlist is female artists, mostly album tracks from a lot of the artists we talk about here. I heard LOTS of 10,000 Maniacs, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Cranberries, Portishead, Indigo Girls, and several I didn't even recognize. They're the presenting station of Jewel and Jann Arden concerts coming up in Detroit. I didn't hear any Happy, but I woudn't doubt they've got her. These female bands are mixed well with the likes of REM, Gin Blossoms, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Blue Rodeo etc. The fact that the station is on the Canadian side seems to be a real bonus in this case, as they play a lot of the Canadian stuff that gets missed by similar stations in other American markets (not that there are many). I disagree. Post is very different from Debut, IMO. It starts like Debut but then it turns into a different direction. It's much quieter and very innovative and experimental. I prefer the second part of Post. The big band number is great and so are the sound sculptures a la Kate Bush. I listened to Post over and over over the weekend and I find it the best and most innovative album that I've heard in months.
