Hi folks! during the past week due to the strong recommendations of many fine people here on ecto, i picked up the following CD's: Jewel Kilcher - Pieces of You Throwing Muses - University suddenly, tammy! - We Get There When We Do and to put it quite simply, they are all great! can't really pick a fave of the 3 but to contradict myself a bit, i find _suddenly, tammy!_ in the disk player the most. i'm somewhat of a sucker for piano and beth sorrentino is excellent both on the keys and voice. i need to listen to _Throwing Muses_ a few more times to get a better feel for them but what i have heard so far is very impressive. at first listen i was reminded of _Zeitgeist_ somewhat but that impression may change with time... Jewel is really an incredible new young artist! Such talent at that age! humbles me when i think of the dupe i was at that age. ;) i'm hoping to catch Jewel when/if she plays at the Fine Line Cafe in Minneapolis July 3rd. i have not been able to confirm that show as of yet with the folks there. hope it happens! i'm on a much needed vacation that week. it would be great i'm sure. i would really like to see the other two aforementioned bands too. i think it was Meth who posted a rather fine review of their shows. anyone know if they ever get around to the upper midwest? i wouldn't be opposed to driving a reasonable distance to see them either. well folks, any info on my question above would be great and thanks for the recommendations. new music of this quality always spins my propeller quite nicely, thank you. ;) Kevin P.S. If anyone is interested, please email me privately. As long as I'm here, I just saw King Crimson twice last week and they were absolutely incredible! If anyone has a chance to see them, GO! Can anyone here (like brni) tell me a little about the Chapman stick? I'd heard about it for a long time, but I hadn't actually seen one before. It looks impossible to play. Just how many strings does that thing have on it anyway? And what's the difference between the stick that Trey Gunn plays (which has a body) and the one that Tony Levin plays (which doesn't)? And how did those guys get to be so cool anyway? Oh yeah--does anyone know anything about Ani Difranco playing in New Haven? I looked at several tour schedules on the web and two said that she's here on the 29th of June, and one says she's here on the 29th of September. Anybody? Ok, I have to get back to work now. Bye! Friday night woj, JeffW and I ventured out to Maxwell's in Hoboken to see Kate Jacobs and Katell Keineg. There was a much bigger crowd in the back room than had turned out to see Melissa Ferrick, but it wasn't sardinelike in there, either. Also in attendance, we noted was WFUV's Rita Houston, and Jeff and I said hello. (I do believe she is lurking about these parts -- if so, would the real Rita Houston please stand up? Thank you! :) Kate Jacobs lives in Hoboken, so there was a hometown crowd feeling to the show. Her music falls definitely into the traditional/folk/rock category, and she has two albums out. All I can say is, if you like Victoria Williams, don't miss Kate Jacobs! Both musically and vocally they are very similar, and the subject matter of Kate's songs invokes the same down-to-earth nostalgic innocence as those of Victoria. Live, Kate and her band presented an energetic set of songs, mostly from her new album and some brand-new ones as well. She kept urging people to sit down and relax, which they did, so it was a very mellow 45 minutes of good music. We chatted with her for a few minutes afterwards, and she was really cool, too. Then Katell Keineg and her brand-new band took the stage. She has a drummer, guitarist, and 6-string bassist, all incredible musicians, and of course she plays acoustic guitar (and harmonium for the first song of the set) and sings. Unfortunately she was suffering from a severe chest cold and accompanying laryngitis that night so her voice was pretty well shot, but she managed to be great nonetheless. Here's what she played (thanks to the set list I swiped on the way out ;): Same Old Man Hestia Still Walking Marietta Cut Conch Shell Burden O Seasons Venus Conquistadores Big Stick Mother's Map Partisan As you can see many of these are new songs, and all of them work wonderfully with a full band. "Mother's Map" was particularly intense, mind-blowing, you name it. Someone yelled for "Franklin", at which point Katell informed us all that that's "dead and buried" and "all in the past now", and basically she'll never play it again. Oops. :) For an encore she strapped on a 12-string electric guitar, and the band proceeded to jam on a version of "Let's Do It In The Road" (who originally did that song?) that had everyone in stitches. Let's just say that cold medication and wine can have some really hysterically funny consequences, and leave it at that. ;> Despite the fact that her voice was much the worse for wear, everything sounded great, and it was an amazing show. Her second album is going to be an excellent piece of work, if the live versions of the new songs are any indication. She's playing at the Mercury Lounge in NYC this Thursday and Friday, and woj and I are going to be at the Friday show. Hopefully she'll be feeling better by then. I order all NYC-area ectophiles to attend one or both shows. Katell Keineg is NOT TO BE MISSED, you hear me?!? :> Afterwards we said hello to Nick Hill (hi, Nick! :) and chatted for a while. Kat Devlin did her final performance of her show "Reaching Out: More Songs Of Kate Bush" at 88's in Greenwich Village yesterday afternoon, and we were there. I had no clue what to expect (frankly, I figured it would be pretty silly), but was quite pleasantly surprised. The performance was in the small (and frigid) upstairs room of this gay piano bar/cabaret. It turned out we didn't really need the reservations we'd made, but hey. I think we were the only people who were there just because we were curious Katefans -- the rest of the 20-or-so members of the audience seemed to be all friends of Kat's or groupies who had seen every show regardless of the fact that they had no clue who the hell Kate Bush is. The show began promptly at 5:30. Kat was accompanied by pianist/keyboardist/ musical director Ross Patterson, who also provided backing vocals as needed. She performed: Reaching Out Kite In Search of Peter Pan You're The Only One The Fog Pull Out The Pin Army Dreamers Strange Phenomena All The Love Rubberband Girl And So Is Love Hounds of Love Under The Ivy Wuthering Heights Kat did a wonderful job with all of them. She's not trying to be Kate, she's just singing her own interpretations of Kate's songs. The musical parts of all of them were very recognizable, but they weren't note-by-note reproduc- tions, either. And, while her range isn't as wide as Kate's her voice is excellent: classically trained and clear, with impeccable anunciation. It was quite obvious that she knew not just the songs well, but the stories and inspirations behind them. It was interesting to see someone else's take on Kate's songs -- hell, it was interesting just to see them performed live at all! When you see someone else sing them, you realize even more just how brilliant a songwriter Kate Bush is (and, I'm sorry to say, how much weaker songs like "You're The Only One" are when put up against her earlier work). Those in attendance who had never heard Kate's music before were definitely intrigued. Afterwards Kat chatted with everyone there -- shes's really neat, and, I daresay, an official Fucking Kate Bush Maniac (tm). :) We invited her to our KaTemas party, and she said she really wants to go but she has something else going on that weekend. Oh well -- maybe next year. :) She's working on a show combining both of the shows she's produced so far: this one concentrated on the "love type stuff", whereas her first show picked the "angst-type stuff" like "The Infant Kiss", "Babooshka", etc. Meanwhile, she'll be back at 88's with this show on July 8 and 15 at 5:30 PM, so if you missed her this time there's your second chance. I heartily recommend it - hey, it's about the closest we'll ever get to the real thing! +==========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| |Boonton, NJ USA finger info at: mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu| +==========================================================================+ | "Turnips do not invite fan members to sit on their couches on stage." | | -Irvin F.
