Was this from a performance called "Quiet Please, There's A Lady On Stage?" And if so, did it include a singer named Amanda Marshall? She's a young Canadaian talent signed to a multi-album deal with Sony's U.S. division (not Canadian). She's absolutely outstanding, and there isn't an album I've looked forward to more than her first, due this fall. I saw the Quiet Please show 3 years ago, which featured David Ramsden accompanying Molly Johnsoon (Infidels), Laura Hubert (Leslie Spit Treeo), Amanda Marshall (will be the next big thing from Canada), Lori yates (country) and Meryn Cadell (spoken word, Sweater song). It was an incredible show. I guess there was a series of these Quiet Please shows with different artists each year, but I'm not sure if there were any since this one I saw. I always wondered if CBC had broadcast it. - ------------------------------- DAN STARK dstark@freenet.niagara.com St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada ------------------------------ From: mklprc@teleport.com (Michael Pearce) Date: Sun, 4 Jun 1995 17:00:21 -0700 Subject: Thomas Dolby Mike Mendelson writes, > 10) Thomas Dolby - The Gate to the Mind's Eye -- put Dolby's name on > it and I'm buying it. And hey! a big Big BIG Thank You to the gentlefolk who recommended Nan Vernon's _Manta Ray_ last week. Two words: ding ding! The cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" works, which was a major surprise. It's updated just *enough* from the original to give it some fresh air, without trying to redirect it. Fantastic! She had never been online before, so it was exciting to realize that I had something to give back to her for all the inspiration she has given me. ANYHOW, that same day someone e-mailed me that he was also a Jane Siberry fan (I have her name in my personal profile). Cool! And so I of course mentioned Happy Rhodes -- turns out he has heard her on the radio...in Seattle. Any ectophiles in Seattle heard her on the radio, too? Which reminds me, if anyone on ecto is an eWorld member, please let me know. I'm always online as TMSValerie, and would love to find another eWorldian-ectophile out there. Hector comments on most of the songs, how they came about, were recorded, and how they deal with the cold north. But he just raves about Jane Siberry: Jane, what blisss! The rug you placed under your feet, your four-legged companion, all the little thingamajigs you scattered on the floor around you, the splendor of your smile...and that tenderness which soothes away allthe pesky things that bog down our spirits. Your voice landed gently on the tape like the first snow, the same-perfect for snowmen-that falls in Newfoundland where this song comes from. Yes, Aliens was a departure -- but the awesome funky bass on the 1st 3 songs (that are like a trilogy to me, conttent-wise, and hot sauce is almost a continuation of airhead) and the very zippy rhythms in the title track esp. are great. It's called _Can We Go Home Now_, and it really is much, much better than _A Dove_ (for those of you who might have given up after that one). Well, that's how I feel about it, anyway. This album is really, really, really beautiful. Really! It's very different from their earlier efforts (more Country/Irish, less Folk), but their gorgeous harmonies are still their trademark. And by the way, a very special thank you to all who recommended Hector Zazou's _Songs From The Cold Seas_. It's incredible! It's my favorite '95 album (so far). Anybody know about his other album? I forgot what it's called, but it has a blue cover, and Ryuichi Sakamoto is a guest artist. Any info will be appreciated. On almost another note entirely, the new Pink Floyd concert recording, _Pulse_ wins my award for best packaging. Cool Earth, sea, clouds, etc. picture on the front of a slightly oversized cardboard shell, hardcover booklet slipped into the side. And the other side has a blinking red light at the top (_Pulse_, get it?) that runs on two AA batteries (hidden inside). The booklet has many pretty pictures, and the CDs themselves are tucked into the inside front and back covers. The 1st disc is semi-great, with stand-outs like "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," "Sorrow" and "Hey You" and a couple of disappointing selections from _The Division Bell_. I don't know, I like the songs okay (i.e. "High Hopes," "Coming Back To Life," "A Great Day For Freedom"), but somehow they don't really work for me in this setting. And I was underwhelmed by the odd performance of "Another Brick In The Wall (Part II)" that closes the set. I would have opted for _A Delicate Sound of Thunder_ altogether if it hadn't been for the 2nd disc, which presents a way cool live rendition of _Dark Side of the Moon_, followed by encores "Wish You Were Here" (LOVE this song), "Comfortably Numb" and "Run Like Hell" (of course). Also picked up the Thomas Dolby compilation, _Retrospectacle_. The liner notes go on about how he never intended (or wanted) to have hit singles, but somewhere along the way, he seems to have been blessed (or cursed) with the ability to please the masses. Not in the US, of course...I'm not sure many Americans know he did anything other than "She Blinded Me With Science" (present company excluded, of course). There are a few extras that make the album a must for collectors: "Urges" and "Leipzig" (heretofore not released on CD, I believe), and the 7" mix of "Airwaves." The rest is a good collection of songs (all of which I already had on his other albums, though). I suppose that's all from my Shameless Plug file right now.
