As others have said, it is quite similar to Bohemia. I saw her show last night here in Vancouver. The only disappointment for me was that guitarist Steve Nikleva is not touring with her. (With luck, I'll get to see him play with Veda Hille while Mae is out on tour!) From where I was sitting, I couldn't hear her song introductions and introductions of the band members very clearly. (She sort of quickly mumbled through them.) However, I think that they were Neil Clarke, Vincent Jones, Rick May, Paul Brennan and Daniel Lapp on guitar, keys, bass, drums and brass, respectively. (That's basically the band on the new album.) The keyboard player played ebowed guitar on "Fine". Mae played guitar and sang, as you might expect. It wasn't clear whether Daniel Lapp was on the tour or just sitting in for the Vancouver (and Victoria?) shows. I suspect it would be an expensive luxury to take him along for two tunes. Mae seemed very happy to be playing to a large and pretty enthusiastic home town crowd - yeah, she lives on Vancouver Island now, but still... She said it would help her through playing shows to 6 people in places like Gilroy, California. If Gilroy IS on the tour schedule, it would probably be a great place to see her! How about 6 Gilroyalists (?) and a few dozen ecto folk flown in especially for the show? (I've been in Gilroy - its a nice place, but remember to avoid the garlic chocolate!) Perhaps because it's normally cheaper to hire someone as a non-speaking role? (except random ad-libbed mumblings in a crowd scene - that's considered a non-speaking role) Though I really doubt that's an issue with a big-budget behemoth of a movie like that. Speaking (so to speak) of singers in films, a few weeks ago I caught the very ending of a film called "The Rapture." Anyone seen this? It seemed pretty intense, with this woman going crazy in the mountains - a cult survivor or something. The ending didn't make much sense to me - I assume I missed a lot. It was directed by the guy who wrote the screenplay to Robert Altman's "The Player." Anyway I mention it because I noticed in the Internet movie database, where I looked it up to figure out what it was, that it apparently has Victoria Williams in it in a minor role. The same Victoria Williams who was in "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues," so I assume it's *the* Victoria Williams. :) Of course, the Internet movie database, as incredible and cool as it is, does have mistakes. Someone pointed out that Helen Hunt of the teevee show "Mad About You" is listed as having done her first movie in 1932 or something. I mean, she's probably slightly older than she looks, but I don't think she's *that* old. She'd be awfully well-preserved if so. :) - Neil K. - -- Neil K. Used to be McLachlan's guitarist. I like the new one, though I haven't listened to it that many times yet. It's similar in feeling to Bohemia, but with more strong songs and a somewhat less floaty and ethereal vibe, I'd say. Though not as hard-edged (if you could call it that) as Oceanview Motel. I'd say the first track on Dragonfly with its spoken word sounds more like Bohemia than the rest of it. I read a thing in the paper about the album. Moore says that in the case of Bohemia she was having a bad time in life, having just ended a relationship or something, and went down to Australia and hung out with a somewhat drug-soaked Kilbey and friends. (the article adopted a somewhat supercilious and disapproving tone about this last part.) The album, she says, reflects that. Whereas Dragonfly was recorded on more stable ground. She rented a waterfront house on Vancouver Island with a fabulous scenic view across the Georgia Straight - orcas (killer whales) swimming by and all that. And she had a wingdingdaddy of a good time making the album with her pals there. More relaxed, grounded, comfortable, etc. Anyway, just some anecdotal hearsay and rumour for you. :) - Neil K. - -- Neil K. It's very silly, but it can be fun for those wanting to go with the silliness...and it will be something that other people can enjoy too. Here's the gist: In the EctoMUSH, which has become quite elaborate, I'm planning on building a "concert venue" for the goddesses (and apostles) to play. It's going to be modeled on Schubas here in Chicago, a tiny and intimate place where I've seen so many great concerts, ranging from Tori to Milla to Holly to Victoria and so many others. This virtual "venue" isn't built yet because I need "concerts" for it. I've only just started on this project so there's a lot to be done. I figured that if I ask for help some of you might get involved. So...help! You don't need to know *anything* about MUSH coding/programming to help. All you need to do is come up with songs and actions for a template which I will give to you at the end of this letter. To give you an idea of how this will work and what I need, here is a very simplified version of a Happy "concert" I came up with. I've taken out all the coding stuff you don't have to concern yourself with. I'll add that stuff when you mail me your "concerts" and anything else needed to make it work in the MUSH venue. Everything in CAPS is in the original template. Here I just use "Happy" as a name whereas in the actual program I would use "Happy and the band." Tori and Jewel are about the only ones that play by themselves. Most of the other goddesses have a band backing them. I would *always* prefer to have every band member's name so they get credit too. It might be confusing to see "actions" next to &SONG numbers, but that's just part of the way the coding is done....the &SONGs (be they actions or songs) play in the order shown. One last explanation: When this (the MUSH "venue") is all ready, it will make more sense than what you see here. For those not familiar with MUSHworks, the people "at" the concert will never see the various commands such as &SONG_#...they'll just see, for instance, "Happy and the band start the show with 'Hold Me'". All the commands in CAPs are hidden from the "concert-goers" so it's not as bizzare as it looks. Ok...it's really bizarre anyway. But it's all in good fun and if anyone wants to help I'd certainly appreciate it. This Happy "concert" was based (mostly) on the shows she did at the Middle East in Philadelphia earlier this year. I added a few things. Any concerts sent to me don't have to be based on a real concert. It's up to the person doing it. Lordy knows that the Kate "concert" I'm working on sure isn't based on reality....more like wishful thinking. I also could have given Happy a lot more "actions" to do but this is a prototype and needs more work. Larne, bless his heart, is going to help me with more of Happy's actions, especially wrt the computer interactions. Here you go... @CREATE Happy @DESCRIPTION Happy=The band: Happy Rhodes - vocals, guitar Kevin Bartlett - guitar Kelly Bird - BVs Martha Waterman - keyboards Dean Sharp - drums Carl Adami - bass &SONG_1 Happy=The band walks out onto the stage. First comes Kevin Bartlett - guitar and keyboards... Next is Kelly Bird - background vocalss... Then Martha Waterman - keyboard player Then Dean Sharp - drums... and Carl Adami - bass... The crowd is going crazy by now, and on walks the goddess herself... Happy Rhodes - vocals, guitar &SONG_2 Happy=Happy and the band start the show with "Hold Me" &SONG_3 Happy=Happy plays "Waking Up" &SONG_4 Happy=Next song is "Collective Heart" &SONG_5 Happy=Happy, amazingly, pulls off "Cohabitants" live. &SONG_6 Happy=Happy plays "If I Ever See The Girl Again" &SONG_7 Happy=Happy sings "You Never Told Me" &SONG_8 Happy=Happy plays an amazing version of "Warpaint" &SONG_9 Happy=Happy poignantly sings "Dying" &SONG_10 Happy=Happy plays the popular "Feed The Fire" &SONG_11 Happy=Happy plays an upbeat version of the cynical "Don't Want To Hear It" &SONG_12 Happy=Happy plays her ode to "Omar" &SONG_13 Happy=Happy has fun with "All Things (Mia Ia Io)" &SONG_14 Happy=Happy plays "Building The Colossus" &SONG_15 Happy=Happy and the band rip into "Poetic Justice" &SONG_16 Happy=Happy plays an acoustic version of "Save Our Souls" &SONG_17 Happy=Happy plays the creepy "Murder" and the band turns it into an epic closer. &SONG_18 Happy=One by one, the band leaves the stage....the crowd claps, whistles and stomps their feet for an encore. &ENCORE_1 Happy=The band comes back out, thankful for the wonderful reception. &ENCORE_2 Happy=Happy plays a slow and mournful "Ashes To Ashes" &ENCORE_3 Happy=Happy and Kelly duet angrily on the intense "Closer" &ENCORE_4 Happy=Happy settles down by herself with just a guitar and sings "The Wretches Gone Awry" &ENCORE_5 Happy=Happy asks for requests. Type 'request ' &ENCORE_6 Happy=Happy gives a final bow and wave and walks off the stage. Notice that the @DESCRIPTION *and* &SONG_1 both show the band member's names. That's because &SONG_1 is part of the "concert-going" experi- ence and you "see" these people walk out on stage. @DESCRIPTION (in this case) will never be automatically shown to anyone. However...if halfway through the "concert" someone wants to see the names again, a quick 'look band' will show them the @DESCRIPTION. That's why they're listed twice. Anyway, the @DESCRIPTION can certainly be a lot more elaborate than my quick knock-off above. Here is a blank template. Remember, the "&SONGS" don't have to be actual songs...they can be audience reactions...band interactions... artist/audience interactions...technical difficulties...whatever. If you run out of space just type in more &SONGS_# or &ENCORE_#. It doesn't matter how many there are. I just picked 25 "songs" and 5 "encores" as nice round numbers. How many isn't important...just keep the numbers in order because that's the order they'll show up to the "audience" in the MUSH venue. The only other thing you need to be consistant about is to have the band/artist name and an equals sign (*except* after @create) after each item the way Happy is above. example: @CREATE Milla / @DESCRIPTION Milla= / &SONG_1 Milla= / &ENCORE_1 Milla= Finally...the content is far more important than any rules I've given. If everything I've said is totally confusing to the point that anyone would just say "forget it" then forget what I've said. Just give me a list of the band members, a list of songs and, if at all possible, any specific details about a concert. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MUSHconcert Template @CREATE @DESCRIPTION &SONG_1 &SONG_2 &SONG_3 &SONG_4 &SONG_5 &SONG_6 &SONG_7 &SONG_8 &SONG_9 &SONG_10 &SONG_11 &SONG_12 &SONG_13 &SONG_14 &SONG_15 &SONG_16 &SONG_17 &SONG_18 &SONG_19 &SONG_20 &SONG_21 &SONG_22 &SONG_23 &SONG_24 &SONG_24 &SONG_25 &ENCORE_1 &ENCORE_2 &ENCORE_3 &ENCORE_4 &ENCORE_5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hoping to get lots of cool "concerts" for the MUSH...please? :-) Vickie - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Vickie Mapes ectoMUSH irc/#ecto "My ears are lucky to hear vickie@wwa.com alt.music.ecto these glorious songs" HR _________ "Imagination sets in, then |_ _ | _ The Happy Rhodes mailing list all the voices begin" KB |__|_ ||_| ecto-request@nsmx.rutgers.edu - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Searching for Happy Rhodes reviews, articles, interviews, mentions - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ From: Michael Colford Date: Sat, 3 Jun 1995 09:04:26 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: The Rapture On Fri, 2 Jun 1995, Joseph Zitt wrote regarding "The Rapture": > Yes! We received a videotape of lots of cool Canadian stuff yesterday (thanks, you-know-who-you-are-and-may-want-to-remain-anonymous-in-order-to-avoid- tons-of-requests :), and I watched it last night. The last item was an hour-long film from 1992 called "Standards", which explored the question of why certain jazz songs from the 20s and 30s (Rodgers and Hart, Gershwin, Billie Holiday, etc.) have come to be known as "standards". Among the experts consulted were David Ramsden (of the Holly Cole Trio, among other things) and John Switzer, and each song discussed was punctuated by a live performance. Holly Cole did her version of "The Man I Love", Sarah McLachlan contributed the most gorgeous rendition of "Gloomy Sunday" I've ever heard her do, and Jane Siberry sang "How Do I Love" (or something like that -- I can't recall the name exactly, and it wasn't one I'd heard before) surprisingly well. There were also other singers involved, like Maggie Moore and Cherie Camp, who I assume were all Canadian as well. All the performances were recorded at a little club, accompanied by David Ramsden on piano. Folks, you haven't lived until you've seen Jane Siberry in a slinky little black dress singing jazz. She should do it more often. ;> In the conversa- tion before the performance, it became clear that unlike the other panelists consulted Jane considered her participation in the entire thing to be hugely funny, and she seemed to be having great fun with it. Has anybody else seen this? I think it was broadcast on the CBC, but I'm not sure.
