(BTW the album "wasps's nest" by the 6ths is tremendous- stephen's songs sung by many different people like barbara manning, mary timony, anna domino, lou barlow....a MUST HAVE recording! *****chuck stars) if only the world were perfect and people were accepted as they are with no predjudices.... but it's not, so.... once again meth our paths have crossed and we didn't meet: throwing muses at toad's were excellent! kristin is one of my favorite guitarists. it's nice to hear that other people agree that she's an unheralded axe hero -axe as in guitar, not like hugo largo's knife! %-) and yes ass ponys were boring (no "the" on their name according to them). sans cherubs played with them here in danbury the next night (they opened for US! - long story) -nice guys, non-descript music. katell keineg at toad's - yyyaayyy! can't wait to hear her with a band! she blew us all away when she opened for natalie merchant at bearsville a couple of months ago and it was just her and her guitarist (whose name escapes me but he was a real nice guy). will we finally meet woj & meth? or should we continue with the "ships passing in the night" thing?? %-) the philly dates on her latest mailer are: june 10th TBA and june 11th GRAPE STREET. before closing: mr. bossert jr.'s poem was MARVELOUS!!!! such talent deserves to go far! and footah it's nice to see that i'm not the only ectoperson that watches beavis and butthead (as witnessed by the B & B calendar in the kitchen...heh heh)! bye all! chuck ------------------------------ From: "Matt Bittner" Date: Wed, 31 May 1995 11:59:21 +0000 Subject: Request... Ectoers, Could someone forward me digest #121? This time is was my mistake. Hit the delete key on a stack of things. Thanks. Oh, and for those keeping track, my wife just lost "part of herself", so it's a matter of time now! Soon, Baby Bean will be no longer and will be a full-fledged Baby! And for those wondering, during the first ultra-sound, the technician was trying to show us the baby (it was only 8 weeks at that time), and he said "See the Bean? That's it", so Bean has stuck throughout the pregnancy. And it's much better referring to it as Bean instead of It! I forgot to mention: when I picked up suddenly, tammy! yesterday, it was a tough choice. I also was looking for the new Sue Foley disc, as well. Lucky for Beth :-) s,t! cost less than Sue. Has anybody else "discovered" Sue? The "only radio station that counts" in Des Moines played one of her tunes once, and I was hooked. Immediately went and purchased her first disc (name escapes me, as usual), and for a period there just couldn't get it out of the disc player. It was amazing that a person that young (20 at the time - just like Jewel when first discovered!) could play that great of a blues guitar. Wow! If you ever want to stray towards blues, look up Sue. You'll be pleasently suprised! Well, enough banter. Waiting impatiently by the phone... Hi, I've been hearing a lot about Kendra Smith in various publications, so I'm curious what ectophiles have to say about her... It seems that there are at least two broad classes of music that are discussed heavily on ecto: The folkish, acoustical type; the rockish type, and the ethereal, surreal, ambient, or experimental type (hey, I did say "at least"!). Much as I hate classifications (esp. when music stores "sort" via some arbitrary metric), I'd be interested in knowing what people think... I tend to like all three, but have been looking mostly towards the ethereal, surreal, ambient, or experimental type lately... for me, however, the defining characteristic is often whether it "speaks to my soul" in some manner, whether that is characterizing some human feeling quite potently and evocatively, or whether it speaks of "other-worldly" feelings and inspirations... Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys came out about six months ago and said that he is gay but would hate to think that that was the only reason people could relate to their music. Neither of the Pet Shop Boys have ever made their homosexuality an issue and have never spoken out as gay activists except for the occasional AIDS benefit. PSB have been a group for a very long time and never even said that they were gay until this year and that was only one of them. Hmmmmmmm (as Mr. Horse of Ren & Stimpy fame has been known to say....) Methinks I will put in my 5 cents worth on this sexual orientation thang... I guess we (ectophiles) must come to the realization that WE are the sane ones - who don't give a rat's ass about who kisses who as long as they are being true to themselves. The rest of "them" are throwbacks to the turn of the century when people would line up to see the "freaks". I maybe sounding a bit harsh - but I am proud to say that sexual orientation has NEVER been an issue when it comes to me and the music I listen to. I LOVED Freddie Mercury, even as a child of 10 when I bought "News of the World". I LOVED Elton John - was totally infatuated with him when I was a kid. When I found out as an "adult" what sexual orientation was all about, and that those two "men of my dreams" did not prefer women - I still didn't care. They were beautiful still in my mind and heart. The PROBLEM with the rest of the world is that gay/lesbian artists are still considered "freaks" or "oddities" by a great many members of "mainstream" society. Would Melissa Etheridge's music mean any less if she were singing the words "man" instead of "lover". Of course not, but those voyeuristic morons who BRING UP the issue of sexual orientation/politics are missing the point. Asking (Melissa, k.d. etc.) do you write what you do because you are lesbian/gay, etc etc.? is like asking Billy Joel if he's trying to reach out to straight, divorced people... DUH!! that type of question would just not get asked. Bravo to those who have had the courage and strength to "come out" in this your-personal-business-is-everyone's-business day and age. If you're "out" and want to shout about it and offer support and encouragement - then talking about it in the press, and eMpTV is not such a bad thing. BUT... when it comes to that innocent little Jill Sobule song.. my blood just boils. Jill hasn't come "out" all over the place and declared her homosexuality. She "might" be bi, or she might not, as far as I've heard... but WHY WHY WHY does her sexual orientation have to do with whether the song gets played on the radio, and what time it gets played on eMpTV.? Why does Bob Mould's sexuality have anything to do with anything? One could never guess listening to his music whether he prefers men or women. WHAT WE DO IN OUR BEDROOM IS OUR OWN BUSINESS UNLESS WE'RE MADONNA... :-o okay.. a little humor was needed....homo-ignorance just pisses me off.... I think the reason why modern American (I can't speak for the Europeans..) society is so fascinated by this whole issue is because IMO it is within the norms of human nature to be bi-curious. Not so much about the "sex" part, but exploring the feelings we have towards persons of the same sex. I will stick my neck out to say that I think Jodi Foster is beautiful. If I had that ever so right balance of hormones/psychology/genetics, I could actually develop a crush on her, and our beloved Kate for that matter. So those people who can't deal with those normal feelings about those types of things get all twisted around and become homophobic or just way too curious for their own good. Stuart ___________________________________________________________________________ Stuart Myerburg stuart@law.emory.edu Information Technology Services labspm@emory.edu Emory Law School Library http://www.law.emory.edu/~stuart ___________________________________________________________________________ Begin forwarded message: KENDRA SMITH - FIVE WAYS OF DISAPPEARING On May 22nd, 4AD releases Five Ways Of Disappearing, Kendra Smith's first album for the label. On Five Ways Of Disappearing, Kendra presents her many talents, implementing a wide range of instruments: Turkish drums, Indian harmonium and fuzz guitar all drift in and out of the mix, with the result varying from the Middle and Near Eastern modes of 'Get There' to the infectious 'Temporarily Lucy'. At times, the record calls to mind luminaries like Syd Barrett, Can, Nico and Faust, though Five Ways Of Disappearing ultimately reveals Kendra Smith's penchant for timeless and beautiful melodies. A Brief History Kendra Smith's recording career dates back to the early 1980's when she played bass in the original line-up of The Dream Syndicate, spearheading LA's then fledgling neo-psychedelic scene with their '82 eponymous EP. After 1983's Days Of Wine And Roses LP and Tell Me When It's Over EP, Smith opted to leave the band. She recalls. "The Dream Syndicate was the ultimate band experience. The music had darkness and humour, live performances were primitive and wild, and we played freely with improvisation and drone. However, I had to leave as soon as I realized that the band as a 'thing' was taking precedence over my need to develop artistically." Smith then collaborated with ex-Rain Parade songwriter David Roback, contributing gorgeous interpretations of Neil Young's 'Flying On The Ground Is Wrong' and Alex Chilton's 'Holocaust' to the Rainy Day project. A collection of 60's and 70's cover versions, Kendra was greatly involved in gathering Rainy Day's musicians and assisting in both the arrangements and production. Roback and Smith next added drummer Keith Mitchell to the fold and released one single under the moniker of Clay Allison, later subtracted the name and adding two songs to complete 1984's Fell From The Sun EP. It was at this point that Kendra and David officially dubbed themselves Opal, releasing the Northern Line EP in 1986 and Happy Nightmare Baby LP in '87. The majority of the material recorded previous to Happy Nightmare Baby was later encapsulated in 1989's Opal: Early Recordings. On these recordings, Kendra and Roback explored 60's folk and psych-pop, running from it's gentler side to the guitar maelstroms and Marc Bolan-like sounds of Happy Nightmare Baby. At the same time, Kendra was continually developing her songwriting and productions skills, while gradually favouring guitar over bass. Because of Kendra's natural reclusiveness, many were unaware of her role in shaping Opal's sound, adding, "I think most people simply classified me as 'the singer in Opal', and unfortunately, the LP credits didn't accurately reflect my total involvement in the band. Instead of turning this into a further conflict, I've trusted time and future works to make these things clear." Although her mid-tour departure from Opal seemed sudden to many, Kendra calls the move inevitable. "It just became clear to me that David Roback and I had very different musical goals and motivations. This mostly stemmed from my desire to delve into more unorthodox modes of expression, whereas Roback's concern for mainstream acceptance and reliance on formulas became very limiting as far as the creative process was concerned." Kendra encouraged the remaining members of Opal to call Hope Sandoval and ask if she would take her place in the band. Kendra adds, "I'm sure Hope thought it was all very strange... she and I had been friends for some time and she really needed to hear from me that this was what I truly wanted." By this time, Kendra had already met fellow Guild of the Temporal Adventurer members A. Phillip Uberman and Joseph Corey. "It was inspiring to meet artists whose attitude articulated many of my own developing ideas about music and arts." Although they would not formally record together for some time, Alex and Johan's influence on her work and thought was significant and helped to strengthen her own convictions. None-the-less, one recording did sneak out from their early collaborations, a bootleg split 7-inch single (b/w Chili Peppers' guitarist Hillel Slovak). "I suppose you could consider that bootleg the first true Guild of the Temporal Adventurers track, recorded in 1988 on a ghetto blaster. This guy borrowed the cassette and just never gave it back. It's mostly just this unusual instrument called an optagon while Corey played feedback". After her exit from Opal, Kendra Smith essentially retired from recording and the daily grind of Los Angeles, feeling the need to get out of the system and reassess what was truly necessary. It was at this juncture that Kendra chose a more reclusive lifestyle in northern California's 707 are code (although Kendra doesn't actually have a phone). For a few years, Smith had no interest in creating music, but then while travelling, she discovered an old pump organ in a dusty shop corner. "I touched it once and knew it would open musical doors for me. I began to consider recording again." Kendra officially 'returned' three years ago with the Guild of the Temporal Adventures, an EP that ended up on many year end 'Best Of' lists. For the release of her full length solo effort, Smith was drawn to 4AD, largely by the label's small size and artistic focus. "I can deal with 4AD without the usual labyrinth of intermediaries and suits," adding, "I had intentionally stopped keeping up with the new sounds on the outside and knew 4AD mainly by reputation, so I was pleased when I enjoyed the 4AD tapes that Ivo sent me. Certain melodies and frequencies do attract me, but I find them here and there, and not entirely in commercially produced music. It's pretty obvious that the artform has been vampirized, and it's social and spiritual functions altered bizarrely by narcissism and greed." Although Kendra did perform during 4AD's recent 'All Virgos Are Mad' festival in Los Angeles, no full-length tour is planned. One reason for Kendra's reluctance to go on the road stems from the fact that she lives on a 30-acre farm where she grows her own food. Maintaining the organic garden is a year long process and she prefers not to leave it for extended periods of time. Living a life free of modern conveniences is "primitive and can be physically and 'psychicly' demanding," says Smith, "but it's satisfying to me. There are many opportunities to study life force in nature and conduct science experiments. I know enough of humans already." As far as her sabbatical from public performing, Kendra says that she'll go out, "when the music calls for it. Sometimes you learn more by not playing, which makes me a genius, right?" ------------------------------ From: Greg Bossert Date: Thu, 1 Jun 95 1:33:54 EDT Subject: Nan Vernon, Kendra Smith, etc heh heh, one the advantages of being the Ecto handyman is being able to grep through the archives for references. one notes that i am working literally day and night to provide this ability to everyone, via DataFace, the first relational database with a WWW front-end to be named after one of my cats. in the meanwhile, however, my special privileges regarding archive searches proved largely ineffective for the topic of Nan Vernon. Jason asked about her at one point, and Dan Stark gave a positive review on a few listens, with a Sarah McLachlan reference. my good friend and Ecto-lurker-supreme Dave Steiner and i have been running into ms. Vernon's CD, _manta ray_, for a while now, and daring each other to buy it. Dave finally did so, and just this afternoon brought it down with a stack of others (Melissa Ferrick's _willing to wait_, Jane Arden's _living under june_, Jill Sobule's _things here are different_, Heather Nova's _glow stars_, Never the Bride) -- good thing we have a 24 disc changer in the office ;) ANYway, Nan came on and i went eep! and checked the liner notes and went ut! hey, woj, Matthew Seligman is all over this one. along with John Reynolds, Martin Chambers, Alex Gifford, and other U.K alterpop luminaries... strange, moody pop -- the quirky funky feel does recall Sarah's FTE. but Nan's voice reminds me of no other than (please, goddess, don't let them hurt me!) KaTe, from TSW or so: a wavering low soprano with an eerie gaspy edge and great control of her vibrato at low volumes. i am sitting here going in loops over this. (please don't hurt me) one notes that Dave S. apparently found no KaTe-liness at all in the recording, and was not in general impressed on first listen -- one's mileage may vary. (hey, a song in german...!?) anyway, um, don't hurt me, but i think it's farking brilliant. Dave dared me in turn to buy Kendra Smith's _five ways of disappearing_ -- which seems reasonable, since i hope to see her perform on friday. i've only listened to it in the car (we only just got back from the CD store...), but my first reaction is "oh my". my soon-to-be-former housemate was, i believe, horrified. this alone would commend the album to me ;) first thoughts were of Nico, the Doors, and Dead Can Dance, and then the album took a turn, and got, er, bouncy. like an Eno pop song only the singing is in tune... ;) got to chew on this one a bit, i think. many many more new CDs. with luck, a more coherent review or two to follow... foodoodoodedoodetah! - --+ greg bossert rutgers university network services +-- - --+ bossert@noc.rutgers.edu +-- - --+ http://www-ns.rutgers.edu/~bossert +-- - --+ i have never been afraid to change -- Happy +-- - --+ the circumstances of the world -- Rhodes +-- ------------------------------ From: Michael Matthews Date: Thu, 1 Jun 1995 03:30:08 -0400 Subject: No birthdays, just a monthly listing - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Marvin Camras Sat January 01 1916 Tapehead Jeanne Schreiter Tue January 03 1967 Capricorn John Sandoval Wed January 04 1967 Capricorn Paul Cohen Tue January 05 1954 Capricorn Tony Garrity Mon January 08 1962 Pool of Life Greg Bossert Tue January 09 1962 OfTheTimes Troy J.
