(don't worry, i won't even start!) and since someone mentioned Tank Girl, i have to chime in that i liked it too, but it's what i call a 'small' movie. good but not great, a whole lot of good and/or funny bits all put together, but overall i felt like "ok, where's the big *WOW* i'm waiting for?" but i did like it, and i'll see it again if i get the chance. it was much milder than the comic, not surprisingly, but good enough on it's own. it even had Ann Magnuson, and oh! For the millions of you who have been holding their collective breath for my two cents (a tad sharp, no doubt), time to inhale! Music is a mathematical system for producing sound. Depending on the math involved, it is capable of invoking emotional responses in listeners. A quick example: major chords resolve earlier than minor chords. That is, If I played a C major chord, the harmonics from the three notes C - E - G would find their common denominator quickly. The C minor chord, however - C -Eb - G - would resolve at a much higher frequncy. This results in a darker, more yearning sound. This is only scratching the surface of music theory, but hopefully helps to point out the mechanism behind the music. Add to this mathematical precision the random element of talent. There are players and there are Players. Beyond just getting the notes correct, a gifted musician can imbibe them with nobility and spirit. Many a player can hit the correct notes, but special is the musician who makes those notes sing. This is what studies are for, this is why people go to conservatories and spend a lifetime studying music. The notes are there, twelve keys, eight modes (?)(I only use about four modes, I've forgotten a bit here!). Take a genius like Horowitz and listen to the subtleties he could produce. Or Segovia. Or Duke Ellington. Or Jaco Pastorious... This is a special gift. Add to this the concept of ensemble playing. The idea of a band - or orchestra - is several people playing at once, each listening to the others and contributing their own parts. Precision technique is required to carry off this amazing task; anyone who's heard a grade school band can attest to the number of obstacles to overcome! Players must be in tune with each other mathematically (A=440 Hz, in addition to following the same time scale!), and players must be in tune spiritually, that is, have the same concept of phrasing a piece. When all of this clicks, when a group of people assemble on a stage and work hard to acheive a unity of purpose, music issues forth and we mortals have the barest glimpse of Heaven. Those of you who have read The Celestine Prophecy know about energy flowing between people. When a band is tight on stage, there is indeed a boost of energy going on as each musician bolsters the others. When this energy is not present, the band will surely fail. So I guess I'm not exactly in the "found music" school. To be sure, I hear the rhythms of the train as it takes me to work, the melodies of the chain saws, and all that, but it's not music to me, not really. It takes a lot of work and a lot of talent to make real music, and to all the musicians on this list, and there are many, I send my humble appreciation for the time and energy you spent not just learning a craft, but taking it beyond its mathematical roots to a special corner of the human soul. Let's face it, how many of you have albums of garbage cans clanging? Hey, no funny answers about Steel Drums! I think we should give musicians their due. It's great to be able to hear the music in randomness, kind of like the elemental AUM of the universe, but the music I turn to to truly feed my soul is music crafted by people: Allow me someday to touch you The way that you've all touched me. I thank you for your expressions. Your music has set me free. The self-titled work is the most uneven and disappointing of their albums (standard opinion disclaimers here). I think there are a handful of excellent songs on it, but also a number of songs that I find unlistenable. Most of them fell at the end too, so I would always leave the disc with a bad feeling, and be surprised, months later, when I put it on again how much i liked it. At least for a little while. If I were recommending a df disc to people (purely hypothetically, of course) I'd say get Live at the Bottom Line. (Did this get reissued too?) "Deep Soul Diver" is my next fave. I wouldn't recommend anybody getting the self-titled disc before the others, just for fear of them never returning and finding the music I like better. In case some people hadn't heard, the band is now officially Sonia and the Disappear Fear Band, with Cindy pretty much staying home and being a full time mother :( They still occasionally pop up as a duo though. Those shows are definitely the more satisfying ones. Neal ------------------------------ From: "Scott S. SHE KISSED A GIRL It's the sort of daydream around which Jill Sobule might fashion one of her whimsical songs: she was hanging around her house in Los Angeles, in her pajamas, when a talent scout who had acquired her demo tape purely by accident called to invite her perform at the atalantic records office the next day. Two days later, he called again-from an airplain-to tell Sobule she was as good as signed. ALl this as a result fo "demos that my previous manager, who dropped me, siad were 'trerrible! you're never gonna get anywhere!" If Sobule's going places now, it may be because of the catchy first single from her eponymous new album, an innocent yet seditious ode to alternative romance "I kissed a girl." "i'm glad I did it." says the singer, "but musically, it is the dumbest song on the album-dumb in a smart way, but it's a throwaway." She certainly never intended it to be a defintive statement on her own sexuality "i kissed a girl," she states dryly. "i kissed a boy. so what is next?" Later, less coyly, she recounts, "i remember having a crush on a girl in high school, but i still liked boys very much, and I remember feeling really bad about the crush. If i would have heard a song like 'i kissed a girl' it would have made me fell better. WOuldn't it have made you feel better?" Sobule grew up in Denver in the 60's, memorizing AVENGERS episodes ("emma peel got to wear the coolest leather jumpsuit") and bemoaning Samantha's fate on BEWITCHED ("she had all the coolest powers-and there's this guy who won't let her use them!"). She playyed and quit the elcetric guitar as a child, then in college started singing and playing acoustic. In 1990, MCA released her debut album THINGS ARE DIFFERENT HERE. But after sending her on the road, the label dropepd her and ditched teh second record she had recorded. " i didn't know what i was going to do." she recalls. "i was feeling so horrible and bad, like my music days were over." Her pajama days now behind her, Sobule is touring again behind a strong new record. The politically astute lyrics on JILL SOBULE are both autobiographical and full of irony. Tales derived from dreams and hard reality and wrapped around quirky melodies with a voice that's high but firm. "i'm not waify," she declares. Indeed, if it sounds like Sheryl Crow has melded with Phranc on the slyly sardonicex-love sogn "good person inside," both are the better for it. And Bette midler has already recorded Sobule's Joni Mitchell-meets-Gloria Gaynor break up tune, "now that I don't have you." In concert, Sobule has been known to play what she calls a "baltic folk" cover of Gaynor's classic "I will survive." Survive she has. "thank god this happened." she say sof her unexpected sudden comeback, "because I really don't have any other skills." -Belissa Cohen so there it is. any thoughts? there is a great (albeit scary) picture of her as well looking really vampy. the caption says "COMEBACK KIDDING 'sobule posing as a '30's starlet'" i just found out that the video to "i kissed a girl" is in the MTV buzz bin. i have yet to see it, since i rarely watch TV (much less MTV) but the clip i saw looked really cute. bright colors and cardboard cut out looking things. more power to jill eh? irvin ------------------------------ From: pmcohen@netaxs.com (Paul Cohen) Date: Tue, 09 May 1995 01:50:42 -0400 Subject: Re: disappear fear... >To Greg Bossart: what do you think of the Elastica effort? Then I'm probably going to whine a lot about some things that are on my mind. I'll warn you before the whining starts. You may want to stay and watch for, if nothing else, the sheer entertainment of it. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll flame. It'll be a hoot. Stick around. First, the Jill Sobule thread: Kudos to Irvin! Great article you posted. I'm actually considering getting the album. I've heard "I Kissed a Girl". Very sad song. Not in general of course, it's just a reminder of something I have yet to do. Seriously though, it's not a bad song and the video is very funny. A supervisor at my workplace (age 50 something) watches VH1 (a better network than Mtv, btw). He likes Hootie, Sheryl, Des're, and such. He comes into work oneday and says, "Chad, I saw the damnedest thing on VH1 last night. There was this blond woman singing about how she kissed a girl and liked it. It was the funniest thing I've ever seen. At the end, her fiance turns out to be Fabio." Go fig. I liked it a lot. I'll check it out. Elastica: Lots of talk about them lately. Maybe worth checking out too. Aimee Mann: Somebody should have forced her on me sooner than this! My brother bought the album and after listening to it myself, it spends more time in my CD player than his. Wowee! Taz like Aimee! Taz happy boy! Sorry. Tooned out for a bit. My favorite song on "Whatever" is "Jacob Marley's Chains". It is such a beautiful song. Probably hits me the same way that Eddi Reader's "East of Us" hits me. There's the instrumentals in the background that make me shiver in JM'sC the same way that those harmonies hit me in EoU. Gotta love it. *whine warning* Radio stations: People were discussing some mainstream alternative radio stations. I have to publicly harrangue our local station, New Rock 102.1. Apparently their idea of alternative is Seatle bands with a mix of what is popular. I have nothing against Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. I like their music. However, when they play them over and over and over and over I want to destroy every record of theirs that I get my hands on. There are two other rock stations in Milwaukee that play the above artists as well. Chances are high that if you turn on the radio at any given time of the day and scan those three channels, you can find a Pearl Jam song. When I ask the DJ's what the hell is with the repitition, they point the finger at the programming. A couple of DJ's have gone on the air saying that they're sick of playin it. What's the deal folks? How do we change this practice? The local college stations play a variety of very alternative stuff. Most of which I have never heard before and will probably never hear again. I can't listen to them either. The only alternative I see is to take my own CD's and make my own mixed tapes to listen to when I'm bored. Takes a lot of time, but what's the alternative? Will writing letters to the station help the situation? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. That wasn't so bad was it? Okay, you're right. It was. Sorry. Bye, Chad....AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Well, I thought that (since it was the only thing I'd heard) but was just a bit disappointed that the rest of the album is a lot rougher-edged than "Connection". Nothing really *wrong* with that, but I though the vocal blend in "Connection" was pretty slick, and they don't really seem to carry on with that in other songs. I was hoping for something glam like Suede, but it ended up more like Curve with a harder sound. But, I'm not going to, like, sell the disc back or anything. - -- Michael C.
