LOIS! they are so great. i love lois. i love them. the lead singer (named lois) is so nice. a bunch of us went to one of their shows and they were so unpretentious. we kept on yelling for them to play "indie" and she kept on laughing because she thought that song was a throw away song (she did it for a 7" monthly vinyl thing, for the month of july...thus "indie" for independence's day). she finally played it solo and kinda screwed it up....but we loved it anyway. it has to be one of their best songs to date.... if you like lois check out their british counterparts heavenly as well as the now disfunct tiger trap. and if you can get ahold of it, try to listen to bunnygrunt. bunnygrunt is local, but have been getting some national press, and have been picked up for distribution by K records. oh yeah, lois and tiger trap and heavenly are all on K records. home of heavens to betsy as well as bikini kill and many riot grrrrls bands. not that i would classify lois as riot grrrrl. lois (and the other mentioned) are pure pop (great pop). catchy and fun and happy. i lvoe to bop around my room listening to indie..... anyway. question to you all. i just got barbara manning's "one perfect green blanket" for $5 and i really like it. i can see how she influeneced liz phair so much. i know she has been discussed before, but can anyone give me the scoop on some of her other albums/projects? You know, I've been meaning to put some Happy Rhodes stuff in front of a number of author/editor types, and I keep not doing it. There are folks at Dreamhaven Books/Press in mpls who are huge Happy fans and think she should be Music Guest of Honor at a Minicon or other Minneapolis convention. I confess that what's been holding me back from exposing more Happy to more people is the fact that I only have _Equipoise_ and _Warpaint_ myself, and haven't listened to them often enough to pick favorite songs. There are cool Happy sampler tapes out there? probably on the tape dubbing project? I should get one for myself, make lotsa copies and distribute. I'm due to make a sampler to distribute to some musician authors (who may very well be often edited by Terri Windling, and who also know Ellen Datlow)... And I should have goodies to give to folks at Fourth Street Fantasy convention. > if there is a two page rave about Happy in one of the volumes i > haven't read yet, then nevermind. ;) I don't recall seeing anything about Happy in any of the volumes, but I read the earlier ones before I knew about Happy, so I might have overlooked it then. One would think, that if Charles de Lint is a fan, he would've mentioned her to Terri and Ellen. He often makes musical suggestions to them for the anthology. I've gotta track down those other HR albums, write to AG soon, yeah. Well I thought he tried reasonably hard to say why he didn't like it _without_ making it a flame (apart from the word "slam"). I agree wholeheartedly that flames belong elsewhere, but that shouldn't mean that people can't say that they like a Happy song. My advice for John is to definitely follow up on your decision to look into Happy, and that you might prefer her earlier albums to her later ones. The song you mentioned with the Kate quote in it is (must be, although I don't yet have it myself) the tribute version of "Feed the Fire" which is to be found on the "RhodeSongs" compilation (the original version is on "Warpaint") "RhodeSongs" and "Ecto" would quite likely be good albums to start with, or to have a listen to if you can... Lois! yay! She's one of my very favorite solo artists. She has three LPs, all released on K Records--Butterfly Kiss (my fave!), Strumpet, and Bet the Sky. The music is just her and an acoustic guitar, and sometimes bass and drums. The three times I've seen her live, it's been just her with her guitar, and a drummer (Heather Dunn, ex-Tiger Trap--greatest drummer in the history of pop music, no doubt :). Each of the shows has been really great! Lois always has the funniest stories to tell, and ooh, all those broken guitar strings..hee hee! I think she's touring at this very moment, so go see her, if you can! Oh, a few years ago, Lois used to perform in a group named Courtney Love w/ Pat Maley of Yo-Yo Records. They chose that name to piss-off you-know-who. Actually, music-wise, Lois and Courtney (speaking of the person now) do have a lot in common. Stuff (some of this I will also send off to FTE): It looks like Sarah's FTE has finally been released in Australia, by BMG - a friend pointed out a review in a recent Australian Rolling Stone (got 3 1/2 out of 5). Not bad, only 18 months after the original release. About the same as the release schedule for new Simpsons episodes here. So any Aussies who dont yet have FTE, go get it, you have no excuse now. :) I decided "to hell with the savings plan, I need some new CD's" and so I have some recent purchases to report on -- Rose Chronicles, Shiver: After all the raves on ecto and FTE, when I saw this, I grabbed. I like it, initial opinion is Cocteau Twins with meaningful vocals (ok, the CT vocals may be meaningful, but not to me :) One of my housemates (the DCD/Clannad nut) has also really gotten into it, not suprising, really. I also finally got Sarah's Freedom Sessions multimedia CD - kept me amused for an evening at home, and a day at work, trying to get sound support working for 'xanim' on my alpha so I could play the animations with sound. A useful day's work :) Need a faster PC at home, tho - the audio kept skipping when trying to sync with the video. After seeing the video tracks, I'd have to side with the 'Sarah looks really cute in pigtails' faction. The audio tracks - I like 'em. In general, the rougher versions on FS appeal more to me than the versions on FTE, but maybe it's the appeal of the new. Good to see it sticks with the Nettwerk tradition of 'lets put a hidden track on the end' - although the joke's starting to wear a leetle thin now. A friend who was recently in Isreal has picked up one of Noa's CD's for me - I already have some dubs of a couple of her tapes from another Isreali friend, so I figured its probably a worthwhile investment. I havent caught up with her to get the CD yet, I'll post a reviewlet when I've had a listen or 3. On another subject, does anyone have any suggestions for some more, I dunno, 'upbeat' ecto-fodder? Most ecto-artistes tend to be more towards the introspective and quieter end of the scale - at times you need a real pick-me-up CD to keep you going, when you're say, stuck at work at 2am trying to figure which of the 4 cpu's in your fileserver is the one with a faulty cache chip (to pick a totally random example); I generally use something like NIN, which at least keeps the blood pumping, but the anger is something I probably don't need more of. (hmm, last paragraph parses not - oh well, you get the idea, if not, mail me for a translation into something more closely approximating english) I must have missed the announcement of Tribe breaking up - a great pity, I really like Abort and Sleeper.
