Thanks Philip Sainty for posting that wonderful story about Rod. I think that is what makes this list so good is our "collective heart". It really made me feel better (about humanity!). I showed it to a friend of mine who struggles with many things, one of which being having to take lots of medication to balance an "imbalance". A similar thing happened to her not long ago, where she accidently took too much of one medication and it reacted with another, causing her to become semi-concious - dizzy, etc.. She took a cab to the hospital, where they admitted her to the psych ward- suicide watch because her regular doctor wasn't around and they didn't know if she was telling the truth about it being an accident. Everything was resolved okay, and she only had to spend the night there - but she was really embarrassed about the whole thing! (it really scared the heck out of her) She kind of smiled after reading the story - it made her feel better about her own predicament. (we toss the Serenity Prayer back and forth to each other because we are BOTH control freaks and tend to blame ourselves for the most ridiculous stuff..) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------- Anyway....this is a long one...... On a more negative note..... I had a really unsettling experience this morning and I guess sharing it makes me feel better. Early this morning when I was getting ready for work, something drew me to the front window (I live on the third floor of a 12-flat apartment building). I saw what appeared to be a small puddle of blood, surrounded by drops of blood (see also O.J. trial - believe me the first thing I thought of was CRIME SCENE). Then 3 police officers (Chicago's finest :-/ ) appeared on the scene, appeared to be looking at the blood and casually chatting with each other. I heard one of them say my building address., and they were gone. By the time I walked out my front door, down the stairs - 45 minutes had passed. My downstairs neighbor (her name is Rebecca), a very sweet single mom who is a bit of a busy-body, but as I said, a wonderful person, came out of her apartment and seemed concerned. She followed me down the last flight of stairs, carrying her cat, and asked me what was wrong. I didn't answer her until I reached the bottom of the stairs, at the security entrance door. Let me explain, if you've ever seen "flats" that have both a regular entrance door, then an alcove where the mailboxes and buzzers are, then a door with a lock on it - a security door. That's the kind of entrance it is. Well... the main entrance door glass was smashed to bits, glass all over the entryway. Blood drops were on the floor and on the cement outside, and what was most mortifying to me, BLOOD ON THE DOOR HANDLE! I felt a scream well up in my throat - mind you, I was in pre-coffee mode - it was only 7:00 in the morning. I started swearing and complaining about why the door was left like that??? Why was the blood left like that??? Rebecca asked me if I heard the screams - early in the morning. I said no because I sleep with my door closed, and my bedroom faces the back of the building, hers faces the front. She has a 10-year-old daughter. I would hate to have had her find that scene. At any rate, I had to get out through this door (rather than go all the way back upstairs and down again via my back porch stairs). I picked up a piece of newspaper on the floor of the entryway and went out through the door (using the newspaper so my hand wouldn't touch the blood). I'll cut to the chase here... I made it to work okay (shaken but okay). After talking to a few co-workers, and my stepmom (who is a very calming person) I decided to call the cops and find out WHY my building was left in such a state, and if they had contacted my landlord. After being on hold with "non emergency" police, a cop-like voice (you know that "emotionless - i've seen everything" voice) explained to me that if it was a crime scene, the police would have finished their business and left the scene. I asked whose responsibility it was to clean it up - he said "the landlord". I asked him if anyone had contacted my landlord. He said "that's not our responsibility, maam". Mouth drops open. Girl hangs up phone. Wonders what it must be like to live in a gang-infested neighborhood where the blood drops on the sidewalk belong to a young person cut down by an automatic weapon, not a clumsy drunk who stumbles through a glass entrance door (which, by the way, is what I figure probably happened outside my building). I haven't been home yet today to see if it's been cleaned up, but I'm sure if my landlord steps outside this morning, he will start swearing in Italian and get all panicked thinking it's one of us (the several single women and elderly people that live in the building). I'm glad it's Friday. I'm very grateful to the Great Spirit that I am alive and doin okay ! I need to go out for some "all you can eat" Indian food or pie & coffee (comfort food!) ============================================================================ ============================== Hey Rick Sheppard - good mention of Joe Jackson. Well I've no clue who Tara McLean is. But Suzanne Little was half of the Nettwerk duo Lava Hay, a typical Canadian band that never got very far. (Michele Gould was the other half) Their image was of two women with very long very blonde hair and long bangs who looked sorta like twins but who weren't. One of them - Little I think - married Tom Hooper of Ginger (formerly Grapes of Wrath) if anyone's interested in such soapy trivia. There are lots of Sarah McL connections of course. They've both been produced by Greg Reely and at least one musician - Dave Kershaw - has worked with both. I'm not all that crazy about Lava Hay, though I have one album I picked up at the Nettwerk garage sale a year or two ago. Not incredibly memorable, though pleasant, guitar pop. Anyway, Lava Hay broke up a few months back I think. And the two halves are now pursuing solo interests apparently. - Neil K. - -- Neil K. According to Cathy at Nettwerk, she doesn't have a bio for Tara (or Suzanne for that matter) from the marketing/promo department yet. All Cathy could say about Tara was that she is a young singer (21) who just signed with Nettwerk a few weeks ago. Tara has been writing and performing for a couple of years, and will start recording her album in the fall (so she won't have a release until next spring). According to Cathy "she's a very sweet person (and suzanne is, too, for that matter!)." Which vocal >style do you prefer? Where does Happy's voice fit (if at all?) I don't >expect definite answers, I just thought it would make for interesting >discussion. Hmmm... interesting question. I think you can actually break current women's voices into three categories, if you were so inclined: Sounds Like Kate Bush, which includes people like Sarah and Tori and Happy; Sounds Like Juliana Hatfield (e.g. Tanya Donnelly, sometimes Jewel); and Sounds Like Nanci Griffith (Tish Hinojosa, and imo Beth Sorentino -- there are times on the new album when she sounds *exactly* like Nanci). I like all three, but I guess the "mature" voices (Sounds Like Kate) do more for me. A good example of this is the fact that while I love all of Kate Bush's music (well, I like most of _The Red Shoes_ :), I prefer the 1986 vocal of "Wuthering Heights" to the original because Kate's voice is so much more powerful on that one (and yes, I realize I'm in the vast majority on this, so no need to remind me :). As you can see, I put Happy in the Sounds Like Kate category, but not for the obvious reasons. Her voice is "mature", powerful, and fuller than those who sounds like Juliana or Nanci. Not to say that the voices of one category are better or worse than those of the others, it's just a statement of fact. :) >Kudos to the Ecto list for paying attention not only to Happy, but to >so many other talented artists out there. Um, I thought the reason Stephen Nikleva couldn't be with Sarah's touring band this time was because of "differences" with Sarah and he was touring with Mae Moore anyway, and Luke is the one who played on Veda Hille's album? Half of Meryn's songs are spoken word, and all the songs contain at least some talking. Meryn is half EctoGoddess, half comedian, it seems - her "pieces" are simply hilarious, and her speaking and singing voice is beautiful, flawless, and diverse. Every piece is completely different . there is no backup band, only accapellas or sparse sound effects. She talks about wanting to be a flight attendant, how to take a job interview, how being in love sucks, high school girls wearing their boyfriends sweaters, etc. Mixed with some truly beautiful songs. I would describe her style/voice as having similarities to Laurie Anderson and Suzanne Vega. I recommend this album to everybody.
