I like it even better that _Sahara Blue_. The music pulls into the mind all of the arctic places that the songs come from/are inspired by. Plus, if nothing else, Jane Siberry has a BEAUTIFUL track that almost makes me cry. Performers range from Suzanne Vega and John Cale, to Varttina to a woman named Tokiko Kato who sings this beautiful lullabye. (sigh) The entire album has a feel similar to Ale Moller and Lena Willemark's album _Nordan_ (they, incidently, perform on a track) only it is far more diverse, and far more produced. In fact, it sort of has that ECM label sound. Plus, today it's cold and rainy here (Northern Michigan) and it makes the songs sound marvellous. It's marvellous... I highly recommend it. - -- "Their discourse, splendid as it had been, resulted in nothing, and their respective opinions and policies were exactly the same when they left the church as when they had entered it." - E.M. Ectoers, For those who care, Matthew Sweet is coming to Omaha (such a far place from his hometown!:-)). Here's the kicker. The Millions are opening for him. I might have to come up with the $15 to see them. The name of the latest Millions release is "Raquel". Haven't heard it yet, but time will tell. I started to go into this in the past, but thought I would expand upon it. There are currently two "alternative" stations in Omaha. Both are public - meaning they're on the normal FM broadcast. The previous Omaha "alternative" station used to be available only on cable, so it's a nice relief to be able to tune them in while driving (just couldn't find enough coax previously...). Anyway, although they are "alternative", you can tell they're more into the "current trend" then trying to present an all over alternative music picture. You will hear lots of Live, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, et.-puking-al. Those bands are good, but when you can hear the latest Live thirty times a day, it gets quite old. Ecto artists? According to these stations, what are those? I have heard Sarah McLachlan, Tori and PJ Harvey, but requesting anything else I'm sure gets laughs from the DJ's. Hey Vickie, I'm no longer sick of "You Are Loved" by Victoria. I am, though getting sick of the lates from PJ. Great song, but thirty times a day is much. Anyway, sorry to rant. For those Millions fans out there, if I go to the show, I'll post a small "review". I'll also do the same if I get their latest. I've said it before, I'll say it again: it's good to be back. So Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson are shacked up in Soho, hm? That's strange. I mean, it makes perfect sense, but didn't he used to be married? I seem to remember seeing an interview with Victoria Williams in which she recounted how she and he met -- he heard about her MS and called her one night to say his wife knew of all sorts of alternative therapies she should try, and that's what got her on the macrobiotic thing she's (successfully) using to treat her MS. Did I utterly and completely hallucinate the entire thing? (Possible...) Gee, if Laurie hadn't been on tour at the time, maybe we would have walked behind her outside of the Victoria show too, and Anja would have figured out who Lou Reed was on her own! ;> I picked up the US single for Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You's" and the UK import single for Throwing Muses' "Bright Yellow Gun" today. I think the latter was the better purchase, but it was nice to hear Annie's version of "Ladies Of The Canyon". Speaking of Joni Mitchell, did anyone catch her on Letterman last night? (We already know about you, Mitch. ;) I managed to tape it -- it was pretty cool. She performed "Sex Kills", and it was interest- ing to note that she rated being able to play without The World's Most Usless And Annoying Band. So far, only Itzhak Perlman and Tori Amos have rated so high, as far as I know. It was weird to see her, though -- I *never* expected to see her performing on late-night television, for some reason. Just as my stop came up and I stood up to walk toward the door, I mentioned, "You know, 10,000 Maniacs doesn't have their lead singer anymore. She left the band." The more vocal of the two fellas said, incredulously, "What? Natalie LEFT? When was this?" "Oh, about a year and a half ago," I replied, and walked off the bus, leaving their heads whirring. Thanks! free ------------------------------ From: Jeffrey Hanson Date: Thu, 27 Apr 1995 12:29:29 -0700 Subject: Mini-reviews of various music I've been meaning to post some mini-reviews of some recent acquisitions for a long time but haven't made the time, so here goes: In exchange for some Jewel material, Neile Graham sent me two tapes of 4 great albums, all of which deserved some mentioning here. They are: 1. Janie Mitchell--Psalm and Squall 2. Rebecca Pidgeon - The Raven 3. Heather Nova - Oyster 4. Veda Hill - ? (I can't remember the title) The funny thing is that that is the order I listened to them and each one just got better. That impression seems to have stuck. Janie Mitchell I really want to like. I love her writing, the varied instrumentation and at times her voice--but there's just something about her voice that I don't like--even though I really want to. There's one song that really reminds me of Annie Haslam of Renaissance (whom I love), but usually her voice is't that warm. Other times she's reminescent of Sheila Chandra. Definitely ecto-fodder--but just doesn't do it for me (though I still listen to it on occassion). Rebecca Pidgeon - Much folkier than I expected, but I really like this. The songs had to grow on me a bit, but some of the songs are just beautiful. Others are quite humorous. The song about her growing up to be an old woman, reminds me a lot of a Michelle Shocked song, but I think Rebecca's is even better. The weakest song on the album, for me anyway, is the cover of Spanish Harlem. Heather Nova - Great stuff. Everyone's ravings are justified. The full band sound reminds me a little of Pat Benatar but Pat was never this good. Heather's voice is great and I love the songwriting. Island is great, as are all of the songs. Definitely recommend this, and I'll be looking for it when its released here. Veda Hill - My favorite of them all. Veda Hill is great. She has an incredible style. She combines the heavy-hitting piano style that reminds me of Tori Amos, but has the lyrical quirkiness of early Jane SIberry. Plus she blends this all into some unique jazz rhythems, beautiful ballads, and a collection of just plain great songs. Every time I listen to it, when each song starts I think -- this is my favorite song on the album--at least until the next one starts. I highly recommend this--but it isn't easy to find-- I know -- I've been looking, and I'll definitely be following Veda's career for a while. Other recent purchases: Horse - The Same Sky I thought Vickie had mentioned this band once on ecto--but I asked her and it wasn't her. Who did? Anyway, I saw it in the bargain bin used for $1.99 and it was one of the best deals for the money in a long time. Horse is the name of the lead singer and the band. The lead singer has a great androgynous voice that combines the best of The Beautiful South/Housemartins, ALison Moyet, and Cher and the album is a very good collection of songs. The songwriting and solidness of the album reminds me somewhat of Kindness of Strangers--they appear to be kind of cheesy pop on first listen, but they prove to be quite infectious. Linda Brady It seems somebody from the bay area mentioned this album. Anwyay, I saw it used and picked it up. Good solid songwriting, good vocals, and a lot of humor. Good folk-pop, but nothing on the album makes me want to rave about her. Joy Eden Harrison - Angel Town Another local artist, friend of Jewel, and kind of the mother of the female acoustic scene in San Diego--though this album is a true jazz album. The instrumentation and vocals are great, but Joy's voice is one you either love or hate. Reminescent of the jazz sounds of the '40's. I really like this, but not everyone will--and its probably not that easy to find outside of San Diego--though it is possible. I also recently bought the latest Siouxsie and the Banshees, which I first bought and dismissed as another pseudo-pop album, but after listening to it some more, its definitely grown on me. Siouxsie is definitely a little older and wiser, but this ablum brings back some of the great doom-gloom rock of the "Hyaena" days--if only Robert Smith were still playing keyboards. I also bought two Lush albums, based on ravings here--but I have yet to really get into them. What's the deal here? I neither like or hate them, but I found that two albums was at least one more than I should have bought. Maybe I need to play them some more, but they just kind of blend into one long not so interesting song. (Sorry Lush fans--this is just my opinion.)
