Keefer" Date: Mon, 24 Apr 1995 16:07:02 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Luscious Jackson in the Philly Inquirer \Philadelphia Inquirer, Monday, April 17, 1995, E3.\ [Headline] Luscious Jackson brings laid-back cool to Troc. Review: Music; By Faith Quintavell, For the Inquirer. Bass is typically relegated to a vital but unobtrusive role in live pop music, but not when Jill Cunniff plays it. Cunniff, who doubles as lead singer for female New Your hip-hop group Luscious Jackson, stood front and center on stage at the Trocadero before a packed house Friday night. For much of the evening, she strummed rather than plucked her instrument, which was prominent in the mix. The resulting fuzzy, funky sounds were used as a counterpoint to Cunniff's languid, blues-inspired vocals. The dissonance between bass and voice conjured the rich cacophony of the city she lives in, and made a bedrock of laid-back cool for her bandmates to embellish. Guitarist Gabby Glaser, keyboard player Vivian Trimble and drummer Kate Schellenbach did her proud. Schellenbach once drummed for rappers the Beastie Boys, who signed Luscious Jackson to their label, Grand Royal. The women have and LP, _Natural Ingredients_, and an earlier EP, _In Search of Manny_. On Friday, every sound -- whether inspired by jazz, funk, blues or rap -- was used to pay homage to the richness of New York's polyglot and to declare female self-worth. "When a man knows/Where he came from/He can't tell me/I am shameful," Cunniff sang on "Strongman." "Pele Merengue," repeated a distorted, pre-recorded male voice on a song by that name as instruments and synthesizer roiled over a dance beat. Musical highlights included guitarist Glaser's innovative use of whammy bar to imply a vortex as Cunniff sang about an emotionally depleting relationship on "Energy Sucker." Drums were added like an afterthought - -- the bass kept the beat -- furthering the impression of a vacuum. Also notable was Schellenbach's use of high-hat to imitate the clipped drones of a rap DJ scratching vinyl on "Angel." Her beats were well-suited to Glaser's percussive choke notes and sinuous wah-wah effects. Trimble is a marvel on keyboards: She changed musical style for nearly every number and added sound effects such as human screams and disco trills without becoming overbearing. The members of Luscious Jackson feel no conflict between independence and sexuality. On "Let Yourself Get Down," they came out from behind their instruments to dance in a chorus line. A low-fi recording of the quartet backed their moves as Cunniff rapped about her "pretty little feet." A cover "69 Annee Erotique," originally sung by Frenchman Serge Gainsbourg, was frankly sensual. What was most memorable, however, was the optimism Luscious Jackson projects while most rap and hip-hop focuses on violence and misogyny. -----30----- - ----------------------- --------------------- Robert Keefer Psychology Department Mt. FOr all that, some points I wish to make before I forget. Firstly, I am pleased to point out for your benefit and use that Valerie's new abode is actually in Lake View, rather than in Lincoln Park as she stated last week. It is also a few more blocks from Tower at Clark and Belden than she initially calculated, unless they've opened a second store on the north side. To people obsessed with the urban sociology of Chicago, these things mean something, notwithstanding that I'm undoubtedly the only one on this list in that category. On the other hand, it is written that accuracy also means something in some sectors of the journalistic profession, even if such sectors make up a smaller proportion of the total profession than they once did :-). A couple of weekends ago, the restaurant section of the _Sun-Times_ noted that among readers' stated favorite places for french fries was an Evanston eatery called Cross-Rhodes. Perhaps they should give Happy Food and Liquors a franchise to peddle their wares on the south side :-). WRT Meredith's weekly compendium: Last Friday, there was a post to Cybermind that they've now come out with a Hacker Barbie. I'm not certain if that's a rib, or on the level. WRT Bob's account of the latest concert: If Happy's tiring of seeing the same people at all her Northeastern concerts, perhaps she should branch out into other regions, like maybe in these parts :-). "st. teresa" starts off the album and meredith can confirm that i was acting weird when that tune began - it has a great tension. i was a bit disappointed that the track didn't turn into a total madhouse...and that kinda sums up my initial impressions - a lot of promise, but it didn't quite deliver. however, subsequent listens has softened that opinion and i find that i'm enjoying the album quite a bit now. to answer your question, yeah, "st. teresa" is fairly representative. none of the other songs have that way-cool-intro-feeling like "st. teresa," but they're in the same general vein. by the way, that's mark egan on bass - he's on the whole album. woj ------------------------------ From: Michael Matthews Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 03:30:13 -0400 Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** **************** Christine Waite (waite@axon.rutgers.edu) ***************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? Not to go on a mile long digression about it - but has it been discussed on Ecto previously? It explains so much about human nature cleverly disguised as "fiction".
