(This is starting to sound like the 'ambient' and 'idm' lists now!) ;) ISDN is much less "organic" than Lifeforms. (jon drukman was a particularly strong proponent of their album _syrnophekeinen_ (or however you spell it)). i just listened to _semantic spaces_ again, prompted by neil's post, and find that my impressions mirror his fairly well. it has the same effect as shadowfax or tangerie dream albums has on me: good audio wallpaper, but not terribly challenging (i'm talking late era tangerine dream, here, kids). i could probably have written a number of term papers much easier with the delerium album, now that i think about it. i find that the songs that kristy sings on are the ones that i like the best. that's probably the intended effect as they are the only two tracks which are noticably "songs." >(it is "Kristy" isn't it? Too bad. Somehow "Kirsty Thirsk" sounds >more euphonious...) oops. yeah. kirsty is a much cooler name. i'm projecting again. woj ------------------------------ From: wombat toga party Date: Sun, 23 Apr 1995 02:59:58 -0400 Subject: phillip glass David Dixon sez: >One track on the album features a collaboration between Mr. >Twin and Philip Glass.. this I gotta hear. speaking of philip glass, a number of us (jeff w., anja, meredith and myself) saw him perform friday night at purchase college. the performance was a score for jean cocteau's silent film "la belle et le bete." the philip glass ensemble performed the score as the film played on a screen behind the stage and a quartet of vocalists sang the libretto in french. despite glass' claim that this was an ambitious project (which i believe), it seemed completely effortless and was quite impressively carried off. i usually find his music academically interesting but somewhat unenjoyable to listen to. his film works are somewhat different in that they get away from compositional exploration and stick to providing an audio counterpart to the visual aspect. "la belle et la bete" was no exception - the music was quite nice and worked well with the film. the vocalists were also good. in general, i'd say that i enjoyed this quite a bit, but wasn't stunned. it's a technically impressive achievement, without a doubt, though. woj ------------------------------ From: Michael Matthews Date: Sun, 23 Apr 1995 03:30:22 -0400 Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** *************** Kjetil Torgrim Homme (kjetilho@ifi.uio.no) **************** ****************** Pablo Iglesias (pi@ruth.ece.jhu.edu) ******************* *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Kjetil Torgrim Homme Thu April 23 1970 Taurus Pablo Iglesias Thu April 23 1964 Positive Jeff Burka Thu April 24 1969 GoFlyAKite Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? I found Mari Boine's latest album last week. It's called Leahkastin (Unfolding), [Polygram 523889-2], and contains 59:18 minutes of utter excellence. If you like Mari Boine's music, I can nothing but say "RUN AND GET THIS!". The album reminds more of Goaskinviella (Eagle Brother) than of Gula Gula. Not only the song writing is excellent, also the technical side of the recording. This was, without exaggeration, recognized by the German hifi magazine 'Audio', which a couple of issues ago featured the album as their CD of the month (in their supplement 'Audio live'. This 'live' is featured on a sticker on the cover, and is actually the biggest word on the cover. Don't be misled, the album is a studio production. (This impression is further fed by the cover picture featuring Mari Boine's head in a pose that looks 'live' (no idea whether it actually is). For all those bass-notes-of-doom collectors: listen to the third track (Cuovgi Liekkas) at mediocre volume and ask your neighbors what happened after about two and a half minutes. You also shouldn't listen to track 6 (Mielahisvuohta) at too high volume if you already do have trouble with your landlord. Bye, Uli - -- "Ein 32-Bit-Betriebssystem fuer uns?" - "Wozu? Yes, it's time for another one of my weekly mondo-posts. First, I would like to announce that after many months of waiting (and a few very frustrating weeks after its arrival during which installation was thought to be impossible) I finally have a CD player in my car. Seeing as I have a 100-mile commute to work each way, this is a very important development. woj and I went for a ride to test it out, and the first CD to go into the player was _RhodeSongs_. It sounded great, even on the highway. Life is good -- or at least, better than it was. :) Anyhow, onward: Jens noted: >Finally, a few notes on Sarah McLachlan: I belong to the "Solace" >minority, preferring that album over "Touch" and FtE, and I find that >I like the songs on "The Freedom Sessions" better than the FtE >`originals' - perhaps it's the simpler production which allows her >voice better room (as on "Solace")... Hmmm... interesting that you feel this way. I think the arrangements on FtE allow her voice the most room of all, especially on "Plenty", where her voice provides much of the instrumentation (though I do think that the vocals-only version on _The Freedom Sessions_ works better in this respect). And then there's "Fear", which stands in a class by itself. The very first impression I got from _Solace_ was that she was restraining her voice too much, and I continue to get that impression even today. Thanks to Neal for the poop on the Laurie Anderson Puppet Motel CD-ROM. Alas, since I am not a Mac person I guess it's not for me. I wonder if I should boycott Laurie Anderson for being a Mac-ist? ;> (In case anyone cares, my computer at home is an old Zenith laptop dating from the days when "portable" meant CPU, monitor and keyboard came all in the same package. It's very heavy and I don't bring it much of anywhere, but it works. Besides, I just saw a tape of a _The Visit_-era interview with Loreena McKennitt in which she's sitting next to the Zenith laptop she had at the time, so now I'm actually proud to own one. ;) JeffW noted: >Once you are exposed to the massive collection of woj & meth, you >know where your money will be going (-: Bwahahaha, our evil plot is working! We'll be going to the 10:30 show, but Bridgeport is a ways away and if Happy's going to be on at 8:45 I don't know if that will give us enough time to do both. Sigh. We will probably be able to get a good copy of the broadcast in any case from the folks down at WPKN, though. We'll keep you all posted, and send a copy to the Dubbing Project if we can get one. Irvin blatantly said: > i am doing a video project on barbie (and her *ahem* better half, >ken). Oh, my. Oh. My. I am proud to say that I never in my life owned a Barbie doll. My parents knew better (especially after I played Texas Chainsaw Massacre on one belonging to a friend). My sister had the original Barbie, though, and to this day the family is ruing the day they sold it in a garage sale. This video project sounds like great fun. Any chance of posting excerpts somewhere? ;> My sister desperately wanted the limited-edition Egyptian Queen Barbie that was available last Christmas (she has this Egyptian thing going), but nobody in the family or in her circle of friends was willing to shell out $50 for it (not even me), and she certainly wasn't going to be caught dead in the store with one, so in the end she had to do without. Pity. mjm mentioned: >I was just in canada and I bought a few things (though not as much >as I wanted to). I got the jane video collection. There is a Sarah video collection in the works for the end of this year, according to the latest Nettwerk newsletter. No word on when (or if) there will be a corresponding Arista release in the US, but that doesn't really matter to those of us who have discovered the joys of Nettwerk mail-order. :) Why weren't you interested in the live video? It's a wonderful tape of a wonderful show, the video bits are interesting, and the in-studio parts are great, especially if you have _The Freedom Sessions_ -- you can see "Ol' 55" as it was recorded for the EP, among other things. It's also on sale for an incredibly good price for what you're getting, and I highly recommend it even if you're not a huge fan. Thanks to Dave Torok for the details on the Garden State Arts Center, where Sarah and The Chieftains will be performing this summer. My parents will be visiting that weekend, and they really want to go. Hallo, all, Chris and Kathy ran into METH and woj at the Alterknit Theater (the smaller room at the Knitting Factory's new location) on Monday 17 April...and how fortuitous, as Emily Bezar (about whom you've heard me and Dave Dixon, and woj, and others? go on and on and on and on and on...) just happened to be performing that night. Emily went on after Rebecca Moore (who followed Evie Ivy, who, in an unusual arrangement was apparently the headliner even though she preceded the other two acts...). We arrived part way through Rebecca's show...She wasn't my favorite, but I think that METH or woj would be more qualified to review her show....one thing that sticks in my mind is that she made (too?) frequent use of that Denise O'Riordan/Mary Margaret O'Hara grace-note-that-sounds-(to me, anyway)-like-a-bag-pipe voice thang. Emily went on at uh, I guess it was about 10, but I haven't been wearing a watch for a while, as the battery died.... Basically, she sang and played the piano and talked only a little bit to the audience. I'll tell you about the first two of those things. Sang... If you've heard Grandmother's Tea Leaves, you'll know that she has at least as good a voice as to be able to make it sound incredible with studio equipment/processing. Live, on the other hand, you realize that the studio processing is nice and neat, but that her voice is incredible without it as well. Soprano, I think, where's that damned press realease, anyway? One reviewer a while back found it to be "too songbird tight" for her tastes...phooey on't! As I was to find out the next day, it's not entirely appropriate to judge her from the point of view of the current-day pop-artist singer/songwriter....her roots are in a much older ...and more disciplined...tradition. Song bird tight is just right for her, IMO... hers is a trained voice, and she uses it quite expressively. I don't have a playlist, but she sang the following from GtL: i really don't, grandmother's tea leaves, i tear down, and avalanche(?)...the rest was new material...which I'm dying to hear in full studio/electronic version. Played the piano...No mean feat as it was an OKAY, but by no means exceptional piece of equipment...one or two strings that rang inappropriately, etc. Her playing style, vis-a-vis her body movements, is not completely unreminiscent of Keith Jarret's...seriously, she moves about quite alot, though not in a distracting way, and carefully avoids the microphone with her head, as she sways from side to side. I was to find out later, that this is not affectation not that I thought it was, mind you, but I was aware of what it might seem to be to some looking on ...she really gets into a state of mind in which she is totally absorbed in her playing and singing, actually oblivious to the audience. Her playing was every bit as impeccable as on the CD. Looking back, I realize that I haven't said much about the performance, really. It's because I mistakenly took the show apart. When Emily got on stage, there was very little in the way of the behind the scenes technical-difficulty kinda stuff we see in more of the folk, pop music shows. She had to find a folded blanket on which to sit, to adjust her height, and once asked the sound guy to turn up her mic. a bit. Otherwise, it was a seamless performance...no affectation, but lots of drama, no lounge stuff. Professional. None of this is to say that her show was cold, or anything. As many on this list must be aware, an artist's heart and soul are not always as apparent in her work as in, say Happy's or Tori's. Take Laurie, for example....very distant, but very artistic, and, if you know what to look for, very personal and emotional. Emily, herself, during the show, referred to her writing style as being "confessional, from a distance". No heart-on-the-sleeve stuff, but very deep and satisfying...if it's your, dare I say it, cup of tea. So, anyway, after the show, Emily, Andy (her husband's cousin/artist), Kathy (my SO), and I went to the Lucky Strike for a bite and drinks. We were talking about this and that and I was yelling ('cause it was getting kinda shri-i-i-ill) across the table that a listener once actually called and heaped praise on me for playing Plague Mass on my show (and how astounded I was)...this scruffy guy at the next table chimed in about how he saw Diamanda in L.A. and how Bud Cort was in the audience...Emily eventually made clear to me in as unobtrusive a way as possible that the scruffy guy was Evan Dando (which I later confirmed by glancing at his Gold Card when he was paying his bill). Unfortunately the moment was lost on me, as I only know the name of the group the Lemonheads, and not their music...I'll have to give it a listen. At the other end of the table was (with 99% certainty) Milla...an ecto-sorta person, maybe, who hasn't been spoken of much here, since Mike started the Milla list. Anyway, we didn't bother him with what-ever-happened-to questions, and occasionally shared some witty repartee with him until we left. The next day, Kathy and I met Emily in front of MOMA, but didn't actually go in to see the Kandinsky show, or anything...instead we got some Reuben's at the Pig and Whistle (ca. 47 and 5th/6th...+ or -). After this satisfying repast, we adjourned to the south end of Central Park, strolled a bit and finally settled down for an interview (1.5 hours raw) which was more of a taped conversation, really. We talked about her views on art, music, expression, 19th century vocals, and a bunch of other not terribly immediate concerns...I hope it turns out well...keep an eye out for transcriptions in the (choose one) [] distant [] near future. Stay tuned for information about any other East Coast shows...for those on the other Coast (BTW, all coastal references being within the contiguous US), you're lucky to be able to see her more easily/frequently. Well, this is Chris Sampson signing off of your bandwidth for now. See ya' on the radio....
