Quickie corrections: The town is "Holmdel", and the venue is the "Garden State Arts Center", which is a cool semi-covered, open-air, UFO-shaped outdoor amphitheatre. It has about 4000 seats (covered) and a large perimeter grassy "lawn seats" area which are cheaper but kinda far from the stage. This is, by the way, known as a House Concert in the folk music world. All it takes is someone to organize and collect the money. There are some people in Evanston who have brought in numerous artists this way, though I have yet to attend one. Dar Williams, for example, has done a few of these things about 3 blocks from where I live (all on very inopportune nights :-( :-( ). So it is very doable -- it just takes someone to take the initiative and call the artist and coordinate. - -mjm ------------------------------ From: Jeffrey Hanson Date: Thu, 20 Apr 1995 11:53:25 -0700 Subject: Stories from the NErve Bible Thanks to Neal Copperman, I just got a copy of Laurie ANderson's Stories from the NErve Bible (signed by Laurie herself!) Anyway, I just wanted to recommend this to any Laurie fans out there. I thought it was a pretty cool gift, but the more I look at it, the more I'm realizing its a fantastic gift. I've liked Laurie for quite a while, but have never really been a "true fan", but this book really helps show all the different sides of Laurie--not just her albums and performance. It includes pictures of sculptures, photos, and all the interesting and varied things she's done in her life. She's got such a unique perspective and creative view of the world. I find myself not wanting to put the book down and wanting to read it cover to cover--not what I normally feel like doing with these kind of coffee-table type books. By Gene Santoro PJ Harvey has struck gold again, with a new album, _To Bring You My Love_ (Island). As you'd expect from installments one and two in the turbulent, unpredictable psychodramas that are PJ Harvey's stock in trade, nothing here is as straight-forward as it seems. Take the title track. A raunchy guitar lick adapted from Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign" is wreathed by a near-feedback drone, then yields to recurrent organ-plus-overdriven-guitar explosions punctuating a chord progression from Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy." Meanwhile, the lyrics, delivered in a voice that ranges from throaty grunge to ululating whoops, tumble _Rosemary's Baby_ and the woman-as-witch trope in with John Bunyanesque rhetoric and the bluesman-meets-Satan-at-the- crossroads tradition. The volatile results turn the mix's ingredients 180 degrees: "I was born in the desert/Been down for years/Jesus come closer/I think my time is near/I've traveled over/Dry earth and floods/Falling high water/To bring you my love/Climbed over mountains/Traveled the sea/Cast out of heaven/Cast down on my knees/I've lain with the Devil/Cursed God above/Forsaken heaven/To bring you my love." In case you miss what's happening, the next track, a furious sonic squall called "Meet Ze Monsta," exemplifies Harvey's bent for retelling fables from the female alleged victim's viewpoint, thus pulling them inside out: Fay Wray, as we all probably guessed or hoped, had what sounds like a pretty great time with Kong after all. In effect, _To Bring You My Love_ is Poly Jean's first solo disc: She plays most of the instruments, does all the vocals and is the dominant element here even more clearly than on _Dry_ or _Rid of Me_ (both Island), which were obviously her auteurial products [see Santoro, "Music," May 24, 1993]. On the down side, that translates into less varied rhythms than her crackerjack ex-trio mates fed into the creative musical storm. But PJ Harvey's also got such a deep bag of let's-get-this-music- physical ideas that that's less crucial than it might be. "Monsta," for instance, grinds out a techno-industrial feel beneath its oozing guitar spew. An almost subdued tune, "Working for the Man," matches techno-style organ bass with swamp-tremolo rhythm guitar and the eerie, disconcerting double-tracked octave vocals Harvey is so fond of using to create an off-balance sonic depth. "Long Snake Moan," continuing the bluesman-image reappropriation (the title, complete with sexual puns, is adapted from blues great Blind Lemon Jefferson's classic "That Black Snake Moan"), takes its gale-force cues from breakthroughs like Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" and "Voodoo Chile" --and in fact, it rides out the fade asking, "Is my voodoo working?" PJ Harvey comes to the States on tour from mid-May through June. Be there, and bring your own mojo. -------------------------30-------------------------- - ----------------------- --------------------- ---------------------- Robert Keefer Psychology Department And we know that we're Mt. I bought it the other week and it's spent a fair bit of time in my CD player. It's the two guys from Front Line Assembly doing lighter, more ethereal fare with, as woj notes, Kristy Thirsk on vocals. (it is "Kristy" isn't it? Too bad. Somehow "Kirsty Thirsk" sounds more euphonious...) I rather like it since, it's, well, not a very challenging album. I find it makes excellent wallpaper music for doing other things. Damning with faint praise, perhaps, but there it is. It's honestly a horribly derivative album. To the point of even lifting both samples *and* rhythm patterns from other albums. Maybe that's part of the fun - listening to it and saying "OK - - here they rip off Deep Forest. And this bit is a total Enigma ripoff. Oh, and this part is inspired by Jean-Michel Jarre, etc." I guess this sounds kinda negative, but I do like it a lot. Just don't expect anything incredibly original, I suppose. It's also one of those really long albums, clocking in at about an hour and a quarter so I don't have to go downstairs and change CDs as often... If you're interested in hearing bits of it without buying it I noticed that Nettwerk has put up big sound samples (of the less derivative tracks, interestingly enough) on their Web site. Takes a while to download the files, though, especially if you just have a regular modem. I've also been really grooving to Future Sound of London a lot lately. (what's with this ambient techno thing I wonder?) Life Forms and ISDN are both particularly amazing albums - richly textured and evocative. ISDN puzzles me, though. (the album, not the technology) Why does a group put out a really good recording and only press 10,000 copies? I don't get it. Wanda and I arrived at about 7:00. We found Sharon Nichols set up at the AG table with CDs and Rhodeways, said hello a little, and made our way upstairs. The first act was midwesterner Willy Porter, who delivered a winning solo set that showcased his mastery of the acoustic guitar as well as his excellent songwriting and stage presence. While I by nature am more of a "band" person, I found willie's set to be extremely entertaining. And he does play a mean guitar - Leo Kottke comes to mind as a loose comparison, but Willie has a better voice. Steve Forbert was up next. Unfortunately, we decided to go downstairs and cool off a bit during his set; it was _hot_ in that place last night. Steve performed solo, and from what we could see on the monitors, delivered a stellar set that had the crowd going. The downstairs area (2nd floor) was a lot cooler and less crowded, and we chatted with Bob Brown and the Kloudas (hi folks!) from this list. (Gee, that sounds like another band name!) Susanne White also dropped by. When Steve ended his set, we all went upstairs and took our places around the stage. The band set up pretty quickly, and WXPN staffer Michela Majoun introduced Happy. There was no musical entry, everyone just came out and walked to their instruments. For those who attended the last concert, the stage was set up differently this time. Martha was still far left, but a little further back. Kevin was justt to the right of her, a little more forward. Happy was center stage, of course, and Dean and his drum kit took up the right side of the stage. Kelly was all the way in back, to the left, and bassist extraordinaire Carl was next to her with is rig. They opened the show with "Building The Colossus". I am happy to report that by and large the mix was incredibly better than the previous shows of hers at this venue. Everyone was easy to hear, and Happy's incredible voice filled the room. The band seemed relaxed, and smiled at each other as they worked out the little kinks of live performances. There seemed to be a lot more interpersonal energy between band members on the stage throughout the evening, as they played off of each other. I can't be much good for a set list; my memory is too far gone for that. There were a lot of tunes not played at the previous concerts. Let's see, I think the second song was "Hold Me", which segued into "Feed The Fire". "Collective Heart"was next, with a little different arrangement. The high point for me was when Happy, playing acoustic guitar, turned to Kevin, and they played off of each other during one of the instrumental parts. A great song, and it's for all of us! After the song, Happy realized she'd not said a word to the audience. She proceeded to deliver a comic monologue - "My set list says "Talk" here - - isn't that a Yes song?" - and then she talked about the OJ trial. It was quite funny, and as Kevin pointed out in Rhodeways from Sharon's post, she could be a killer comedienne! The heat in the room played havoc with instrument tunings, so Kevin presented a long extemporaneous introduction to the next song, "Temporary and Eternal" while she tuned up. It was a nifty arrangement for the band. She also did "Big Dreams, Big Life" solo on acoustic. Next up was "Save Our Souls", which had the full band going, albeit quietly. Very pretty song! The band kicked in again for a truly stunning version of "I Say". This has to be one of my all time favorites, and it was a beautiful rendition, lots of power! Next up was old favorite "Poetic Justice", during which pieces of Dean's shattered drumsticks flew all over the place, and Carl's rig seemed to be on the verge of toppling. It really rocked! Happy concluded her set with "Glory". I can't say enough how much I _love_ this song, and she did not change the arrangement from the album (except for not doing the jazzy ending; they stopped with the line "I'll embrace you when I can..."). It was glorious. Thunderous applause bought them out for their encore, "Cohabitants", and this tricky little devil of a tune ended an hour of totally wonderful music. Happy and the band socialized with us (a lot of us!) on the second floor afterwards. I got another *HUG* (sigh!) from her and the admonition "Gee, I'm getting tired of seeing you at all these concerts!!", to which I warned her that she better get used to it. She was in great spirits, not as tired as the last time she was through, and she looked great. I even got a *hug* from Kevin! Martha and Kelly said hello. I talked bass a little with Carl, and complimented Dean again on his incredible drumming. As Wanda had to go to work this morning, we took our leave at about 12:30. It was a wonderful show. I'm sorry there weren't more ectophiles there; even though the place was "Sold Out", there was more room than there was at either of Happy's previous concerts there! WXPN announced that this concert had sold out very quickly, while their upcoming Keswick concert still had tickets available. Seems to me they should have put Happy in that venue! Well, let me stop now and get this posted. As I said, my memory may be off a little w.r.t the order of the songs, but I think I covered all of them. Wish you'd all been there!
