Sorry to correct you, Vickie, but the muck I was on last year (and hopefully this year too) had quite an extensive area devoted to the collective Goddesses :) I had areas for KaTe, Jane, Happy, and I was also working on Tori, Julia Fordham, and Milla.... although I don't have all that much info about her. Yes, the Kate area was called "the Garden", and it had ivy, white roses, Waterloo Bridge, a wartime shelter, the Cloudbuster, and KaTe herself wandering around in it. The Jane area has a forest, a field, and lakes and rivers aplenty, with a white tent and a raft floating down one, and hockey players further upriver. There's also a temple with doves in the rafters, while Mimi flaots in the lake outside. The Happy area, needless to say, is inside a Colossus. Alice guards the gate. There are plenty of surprises there! And we mustn't forget filicat's Ecto Hostel! Sadly, this muck is only open to Wellington subscribers and it hasn't been up for quite a while. Rumour has it that it's going to be up and running quite soon though! I'm not sure what EPK refers to... maybe someone who works in television can enlighten us all? Maybe it means her video for "Who Will Save Your Soul." Folks, you owe it to yourself to catch this April 27 show with Jewel in it. I assume they will play the whole interview, which includes a fantastic performance of a great great song, "You Were Meant for Me". Also, the other band featured is a great Canadian band, the Tragically Hip. They and another of the featured bands, (Moist) have roots in my town, which is wierd since Kingston is so small. If any of you US ecto-folk would be willing to tape this for me, PLEASE PLEASE e-mail me! I would prefer an original taped off the air, but would also be interested in a dub if I can't get the original. I will of course pay all costs, or we can work out a trade. I just decided to wait until I was in Mtl to get it. I assume it's not available here, but I haven't looked. If you (or anyone else in Chicago) want to see it, I'd be happy to have a viewing. As for my varied purchases: I like the newer rankin stuff alot, esp. a CD5 (limited edition EP) I picked up (Gray Dusk of Eve). And I like the Sarah disk as well.... but what has that girl been smoking? Are all her CDs from now on going to have hidden tracks? Considering that they're not really hidden at all, I say: novelty once, annoying ever after. The whole point of CDs is random access: if you're not going to demarkate each song, then it's wasting the technology. Ah well, I really shouldn't complain. BTW, I didn't have time to look in a lot of record stores for Veda or any of the others I mentioned so don't assume it's not available anywhere in Montreal. - -mjm ------------------------------ From: bbrown@netaxs.com (Bob Brown) Date: Wed, 19 Apr 1995 14:55:38 -0400 Subject: Re: Sarah and Happy... There's a song or two they do that remind me of Vartinna. I suspect they are better live than on record. They are 3 sisters and 2 brothers. All the sisters and one of the brothers sing. The other brother plays piano. If I had to come up with one criticism, I'd say that their songs are to simplistic -- but then that criticism is true of much of the traditional (irish/celtic) music I've ever heard -- there are only so many jigs and reels I can tolerate. The rankin's only do these as part of their repertoire, though. Some of their stuff is also in the country/ line-dance category, which I generally stay away from. So it is a mixed bag. I would say the best (and most ectophilic) thing by them I've heard is a CD5 called Grey Dusk of Eve, 1995. Their latest full CD is 1993, North Country. They open for Mary Black in Chicago this May. What WOULD it take to get Happy to venture beyond NY, PA, and the rest of the Eastern Seaboard..? I know .. this probably has been answered for me in the FAQ - but then again - I don't have the FAQ (no web access yet....) I was thinking about the recent tour by Patrick Moraz - he advertised his "services" on the net. For a fee of ($800 I think) he would "play" in your living room - you provide the piano and the "guests" and he would be the entertainment. Couldn't a bunch of us in the midwest organize a show to have Happy play? I would pay $25-$50 to see her play and it still would be cheaper than airfare or gas (and hotel, etc.) for me (us) to see her on the east coast. If we got 10 of us to pay $50 each, that would be $500 - not to mention other people who would like to see her, but for less money. We could advertise it on other lists - like Notes from the Edge (where the Yes Fans might recognize her from Yes Fest). We would just need to find a small-ish venue, like a nice coffee house or low-key club (with a good P.A. would even be better)- sell "tickets" through the list, or the fanzine at a higher price (to make Happy's trip worth her while) and then maybe lower to the general public. Maybe reward those "fans" who bought higher priced tickets with a reception for Happy after the show - where we could meet and chat with her. Do it in the summer, when the weather is nice here (in Chicago) and people are in good moods. I don't know - I may be dreaming... but "...my dreams are my reality..." :-) I just can't swing a 12 hour drive to Philly or NY on a weekend, plus hotel costs and gas money, etc. PLUS - driving all that way by myself is a somewhat scary thought. (I get night blindness). The longest trip I've made myself has been my numerous trips between Chicago and Columbus, and that's only 380 miles. I'm so INSANELY jealous that she's playing this weekend and there is no way I can make it. Some of you (Mr. Lovejoy, METH) know Happy - do you think she'd be up for something like that? Jewel, Jill Sobule, Victoria Williams, Bettie Seveert, Mary Karlzen, and Melissa Ferrick all have their own pages on it now. There were some artist descriptions, publicity photos, and tourdates (but the few I checked were woefully out of date). I was impressed to see that unlike some other labels' homepages, they were putting a focus on promoting lesser-known acts, rather than showcasing their already-successful stars (with the glaring exception of Page & Plant). They also have a page for the Tragically Hip, check that out too, they are one of Canada's favourite bands (although there are no women in the band). It was a bit of a weird evening for me. I've been seeing a lot of big ticket concerts lately (I can't believe how many people are tempting me into spending $30 a ticket), so I went into Baltimore with the intent of not paying too much or just going to a movie. Nancy Griffith is definitely not a $30 ticket in my book. So I hung out offering a measly $10 to anyone with tickets, and certainly not making any friends, until some desperate soul grudgingly took my money because it was better than nothing. So I went and sat in my 7th row center dirt cheap seats, and felt guilty about having taken advantage of these people, who I then had to sit next to for the whole show. I still don't think it was a $30 show, but I'm not sure I feel any better about having some poor soul suppliment my ticket purchases. For all I know I could afford the show better than him. Think I'll have to rethink this strategy and offer a fairer price in the future. The show was pretty fun, but once again I have to wonder about myself. Almost everyone there gave Nancy an enthusiastic standing ovation, but I wasn't that knocked out by the show. I heard lots of Best show of the year comments (which I know isn't true, because that was Sarah McLaughlin's show, so far). Not like the show was bad, it just didn't generate that much excitement for me. I did tape it though, and as I sit here listening to it, I find that the tape is really excellent. I've had this happen before, and don't really understand how I can like the tape of a show better than the show itself. Seems pretty strange. As an encore, she came out and talked about admiring MLK and Lyndon Johnson's idea of a great society, and how spreading racism is an insidious form of child abuse, and dedicated her final song, and a few moments of silence, to the children in Oklahoma City. The song was "It's a Hard Life Wherever You Go", and it had a deep pounding bass drum playing behind it. The version was raw and gritty and heartfelt, more powerful than anything she'd done the whole evening. It was a stunning moment, and I was all too happy to join the standing ovation then, as Nancy stood there with tears in her eyes. That one song vaulted the concert from being a decent evening to being an excellent one. I missed part of Sarah Hickman's opening set, but she was quite entertaining. She's got a big personality, and an even bigger smile, and played a really fun show. I saw her in a club 5 years ago, and was really taken by her, but then when i got a disc, it didn't grab me too much. Don't know what her recorded output has been like over the last few years, but I did enjoy seeing her live again. Since Baltimore was the closest the show came to the DC area, it was fun driving out of town next to a long line of cars with DC plates and passengers all looking at maps, trying to figure out how to get home again. A couple of days ago I posted about Jewel and PJ Harvey appearing on *US* MuchMusic. NOTE this scheduling change!!! *** As for the difference between US and Canadian Much, I think that the US version gets most of the shows from the Canadian version, but shows them according to their own schedule. Much US can also air their own shows. I don't know if there are any Much shows you can only get in Canada, my guess is yes. I would guess that Much US shows less Canadian content than Much Canada since they wouldn't have to meet Canadian content regulations. Much US is based in NYC, and Much Canada is based in Toronto. I'm not sure what areas in the US get Much US, but parts of NYC and Boston definitely get it. Steve P.S.
